"Petrie Park- an oasis in Kaimuki"…read more Great little community park next to Waialae elementary school. They have outdoor tennis, volleyball and basketball courts and a nice grassy field for little league baseball games and practices. Like all facilities while still under pandemic restrictions, be sure to follow the protocols in effect at the time of your visit. The views from the upper part of the park on 20th Ave. are quite nice, especially during sunrise. During normal in-school class days, most of the street between the school and the park is closed. On the mauka side there is access to a couple of parking stalls for your use when using the park. An interesting side note is that the park's rec. bldg. next to the children's playground equipment area used to be an open pavillion that was one of the coolest places to sit. The tradewinds would roll through with a sweet breeze as you sat and kicked back to daydream during the lazy days of summer.

I will have to admit I have a soft spot for this park, as my friends & I use to hang out at this park during our Intermediate, errr............or should I say middle school dayz. I even played park league b-ball for Petrie park back in da dayz...........and if I can find da vintage pic, I'll post it for you folks, so you can get a good laugh! Buwahahahahaha! Petrie Community Park is not overly big, but it has a little of something for everyone (for all ages). Petrie park has several basketball courts, tennis courts, a volleyball court, a jungle gym for the kiddies, and a large field for kids to play soccer, baseball, as well as football. There are also several benches & picnic tables on the park premises, should you wanna eat there, or watch the kiddies. In my recent visits here, I could clearly see that the field could use some water, as the grass was pretty brown & dried up...........but of course summer is just around the corner, so I guess maybe the city is trying to save water? There is also a office pavilion, as well as a restroom at Petrie park, but be careful if you come here at night, as I saw some sketchy element hanging & loitering around the restroom area. There is no private parking lot for this park, but not to fret as there is a lot of street parking within the Kaimuki neighborhood. Through the years, not much has changed at this park since I used to hang here as a kid, but glad to see folks still bring kids here to enjoy this nice community park.

This playground has a good amount of shade throughout the whole day. But it does come with its down fall. Due to its huge tress covering the park it has a lot of birds and while my son played on the slide a bird almost pooped on him. And street parking can be a factor but we didn't have any trouble with that. The best thing I liked was the open field next to the park. It's a nice shaded place on a bench to just have a small meal and enjoy the breeze go buy. Second best thing is the restroom is literally next to the playground. Very convenient for our kids. And this park is located right behind the Waikiki zoo and my kids can see the tall giraffes eating from the trees.

The main play area is shaded by big monkey pod trees so kids and parents alike are comfy. -lots of free street parking! -tho in the thick of Waikiki, is fenced off from the thoroughfare traffic. -swings! -picnic tables and benches: there's only 1 bench by the play area and 2 tables so if you really want your own, bring a picnic blanket/mat or chairs but even the. There's lots of shaded area to just sit or rest. Cons: -on this beautiful Sunday afternoon, every motorcycle and Harley felt they needed to cruise this area...SO...con is it's a noisy area with high traffic. However it's properly fenced off so you don't feel afraid of your kid running off. Overall: -Great Park in Waikiki for the 7 and under...I'm thinking even 5 and under. If you have older kids bring some balls or other sporting equipment as I can see them getting bored with the provided playground equipment fairly quickly. If you need to run your littles around in a safe and comfy park, this is it.

It's been more than three decades since I last got on a basketball court to shoot some hoops, and it's nice to see that the Kapaolono Community Park is trying to up keep their facilities. This community park has a special place in my heart as I spent many hours here playing basketball, tennis, & baseball/softball. Kapaolono has a very large field, great for baseball & softball. Two tennis courts, & two basketball courts. They also have a swimming pool here, but I've never had a chance to use it. A few things I noticed about myself when I got back on the basketball court - 1. I noticed I had a little trouble dribbling the basketball, due to the neuropathy in my fingers. 2. I can still shoot the ball pretty well. 8 out of 10 on the freethrow line ain't too bad for an old fart like me. Lol! 3. Man, I am out of shape! If young kids asked me to join in on a pick-up game, I'd probably have to pass to prevent a heart-attack! Lol! 4. There are cracks on the basketball court, but at least the cracks are not craters! Lol! Still a great Community Park to visit & get some exercise! Gotta keep moving, to keep da old man out!

This review is mostly based on the use of the playground at the end of the day (after work)…read more Even though we live in downtown, we have been taking our daughter to this park for the past few years. We have the most luck tiring her out at the playground here. We have no other family on island and since our daughter has not been to daycare since the start of pandemic, playtime opportunities with playmates are slim. She misses playing with other kids and we have the best luck coming to this park since many people in the community bring their kids here to play. We feel safe here because most parents are more attentive to their children here compared to other playgrounds we have tried going to. We have been to others where parents paid no attention to their children even if they were misbehaving or being abusive to other children. We also have not experienced any random individuals loitering at this park, which also provides a sense of safety. Aside from the playground, the park has tennis courts, basketball courts, and baseball diamonds. This park gets a lot of traffic, but not too much. The tennis courts and basketball courts seem to always be used, but since there are no lights, those courts can't be used at night. The playground gets some light but not too much, so once it is past twilight we get going.
