(I would have preferred to stand outside the room while they shoot the image and be his advocate since he is a minor. By the time they invited me back the dentist was arriving. When asked how the cleaning went, I was told they don't clean kids teeth (no scaling, polishing or flossing). Then the fluoride treatment was pretty awful looking which they said would fall away over time. Then, I wanted to make my child's next appt with the dentist at a different location since he's only in this office 1 day per week and they insisted since we got established at Prince Kuhio plaza so we had to keep coming back there. (It's a day I work and was an unforeseen circumstance that I could be there on a Monday to begin with. Once we got home, I checked my child's teeth, he still had terrible calcium deposits on the backside of his lower teeth. Then, I called to ask the dentist to do the job he billed the insurance for, and on 2 separate occasions I got put on hold for 7 and then 10 minutes until I hung up because nobody came back to speak with me and no surprise, nobody called me back. My child has been going to the dentist since he was 2 and has had a hygienist clean his teeth every visit, including scaling and flossing. BTW, no Velcro blanket to strap him down either. He's a great little patient. (I know at least one dentist office in Hilo that wont let parents go back with their kid after age 7 and they use restraints if needed...is that even legal?) Hawaii Family Dental billed my insurance, with the EOB stating I may owe $500+. When I called billing they say I owe nothing. Not sure what's going on there... Oh- and it took 6mo or more to even get an appt with Hawai'i Family Dental. Sorry to say- I would NOT recommend this place.

I'm one of those types that actually likes going the dentist. I've had many different experiences…read moreover the years-- a mix of good, neutral and bad, so I've been impressed with the consistency of good work at Takata Dental. All of the front office staff, dental assistants and hygienists are warm and friendly. Doctor is very clear, asks if you have questions/concerns. I've always felt comfortable and welcome by everyone. A few tips though-- be punctual as they are strict with that. Getting on the schedule can be tough at first, it will likely take more than 6 months. But once you are seen initially, you can generally schedule cleanings every 6 months.

I am trying to schedule an appointment for my kids on a day that works for my husband and I busy schedule. You have a Receptionist (Esther) whom does not take into consideration of changes and bypasses Rescheduling my kids to keep them on your scheduke for their Dental Treatment. My issue has NOT been resolved and your receptionist (Esther) likes to Disrespect and bypass the task that she was supposed to do. Esther has horrible customer service while providing care and respect to certain patients time, especially when she was advised of the changes of when we are available. Horrible experience while scheduling my appointment because Per Esther- I will inform my Dental Provider and see if he is willing to do the procedure on a saturday." That was not done and should not have taken Esther all day to provide a logical answer. She did not do what was mentioned to me at 07:45am HST yesterday 09/02/2025. You have a Disrespectful receptionist handling your scheduling of appointments that initially Refused to Reschedule after being told about changes to our schedule during the week. Esther needs to work on figuring out a solution that is best for Bother Provider/Patient. She did not do neither and was Quick to just cancel the appointment. I still have not been transferred to the Manager. Is this the type of Customer Service I have to experience when I schedule an appointment for my kids Dental Treatment?

I also had to pay a neighbor four separate times to drive me there and back. At Kea'au Family Dental, the exam and cleaning were completed in one visit. While I love the hygienist Adam, the front desk staff is not welcoming or helpful. During the most recent cleaning appt. we were informed that we had to pay $50 fee for broken appt. before we could be seen. The only appt. that we didn't show up to, we had called and informed them that we cannot make it on time and instead of being late, they said it was not a problem to reschedule. We waited 3 months for this rescheduled appt. to be told that we owed a fee! They also stated they didn't have time to talk to us about it and there was no record of "Rescheduling within 48 hrs" and we could either pay or not be seen. This is the way regular patients are treated when the business is aware that there are not many options on island to switch dental care to. Extremely disappointed! I'll be using their services only until I secure another provider!

After asking around, I was referred to Dr. Leong. I wish I had known about him sooner. He and his staff are kind, patient, non-judgmental and always happy to see you. I am not a person who is afraid of the dentist but I know that some people are. They are very gentle and will tell you as things are happening. I have tori mandibularis (bones growing under the tongue and the top of my mouth), which makes x-rays painful. They were such pros in doing the x-rays with the bitewings that there was no discomfort or pain. They accept most insurance and copayments are minimal. It is easy to schedule, cancel or reschedule or appointments. I highly recommend this dental practice to anyone.

He did prescribe the antibiotics to eliminate my infection before my first actual dental care visit. The staff, as I witnessed, were very conscientious with disinfecting and taking Covid-19 precautions. Dr. Leong is now my permanent dentist. He is efficient, gentle, and caring of my pain threshold. I am a finicky shopper or products and services. Dr. Leong gets two thumbs up and I highly recommend him.

Dr Miyasato is nice, but she pawned us off on a new dentist who is straight from the mainland, Alex Spivak. Alex Spivak saw our kids and said they all had many cavities that needed to be filled. We said okay, and sent them in for treatment. Our son went in and said his mouth was numb for an unusual amount of time. Husband went in and had the same problem. He informed Spivak, before we sent out daughter in. He saw our daughter, who went in to the office a completely healthy child, and filled her cavity. Like her brother and dad, she had numbness to her face that lasted all night. We figured it would wear off the next day. IT DID NOT. Her entire face on one side drooped, from her eye to her lip. It looked like she had a stroke! We called him to inform him of her injuries and he wanted us to bring her in. We told him we were taking her to her physician because he couldn't do anything for her and because why would we want to take her back to someone who INJURED her?! Her doctor said she had nerve damage and prescribed her a heavy steroid medication to try and relax her face. He stated that he couldn't tell if it was broken or bruised and said he would get a specialist to see Her. In the meantime, this was before Christmas and we had planned out a trip to the mainland for our kids. So we hoped and prayed that her face would return to normal for her sake. NOPE! Her face remained droopy and she lost control of the muscles that move her eyebrows. Her eyes watered like crazy and her mental health was affected. She was miserable the entire trip. She used to be our most cheerful child, friendly, talkative and happy but after the injury caused by Dr Spivak, she withdrew from everyone in the family and became very angry. We arranged for her to get counseling because of this. Remember that the injury affected half of her face, which is the first thing everyone sees! She couldn't raise her eyebrows, or move her mouth, which affected her speech, her smiles, and the way she ate and drank. In school, she would cover half of her face from her eyes to her chin, with her hand. Her food and drink would drop out of her mouth for Months because she couldn't control her lip muscles! We went to see the pediatric neurologist we were referred to and he confirmed that her facial injury definitely came directly from the dentist. As I said before, prior to her appointment she was 100% healthy and had a happy disposition. Her face was injured from December to March and we have received NO APOLOGIES from Spivak or Waimea Smiles. But we have received a letter signed by him stating that he discontinued service to us because of a "patient doctor breakdown" No class, no aloha, and no integrity. On a side note, those "many cavities" our kids had magically disappeared once we switched dentists. Interesting how that happened.
