Told the staff I had anxiety about dental work upon scheduling. Nobody seemed to care about that. Especially the doctor, who shamed me for what he believed to be a lack of effort on my end. Doctor was incredibly rude, not one ounce of kindness was given to me. This was like 5 years ago and I am still haunted by it. We had an appointment six weeks ago. The experience was not great but also not bad and X-rays were taken. We were given some options after the visit but we have since left five telephone messages to follow up and gotten no response in all this time. Disappointing and we won't be coming back. read more

When my son had a seizure and broke his tooth his dentist was out of town. I called every dentist trying to get help. All the offices refused to help but Dr Sugiyama office kindly squeezed him in and helped us. Dr. Sugiyama is definitely the most personable and friendliest dentist I have ever met in my 38yrs on this earth. He took his time to explain literally everything to me regarding my teeth and how to best take care of them. I left the office with much more knowledge than I entered. I am so happy to have found such an amazing dentist, and this was just my first visit! There is no question that Dr. Sugiyama earned and deserved every one of the many awards he has displayed around the office. I am looking forward to the work he is going to do on me and I am very confident he will do a great job. I sent an email to Dr. Sugiyama on Jan. 17 2020 & never received a response. Here's the email. Dr. Sugiyama, I just wanted to ask you a question. As per our conversation yesterday, I want to know why didn't you tell me, on my initial visit on Dec. 13, that the procedure the endodontist was going to do was temporary and that I was throwing my money away? If you had told me that, I wouldn't have pursued any further appointments. During that same visit, I don't recall you saying that someone else was going to do the procedure in the first place. You never mentioned the doctor's name. You just referred me to the down the hall & they were going to set up a credit card that I would pay in installments. On Dec. 20, I had an appointment with the endodontist. When I questioned him about what we were doing and how I thought it was not the same thing that you had spoken to me about previously, he tried to call you to clear things up, but you weren't available because you had already left for vacation. So, I postponed my appointment until January 15, when I knew I could see both you both. Yesterday, when I saw the doctor, he said he was going to drill a hole in the bridge to put in the crown. I asked him if he was going to remove the bridge, but he said no. I found that odd. That's not what we discussed. Yesterday, you said the best thing to do is an implant, which was never discussed before. Although you said it would be expensive, you never said how much it would be nor if I could have done it and paid for it with the Care credit card. I was not given that option. In the several weeks that passed after your return from vacation, you could have called to explain everything to me, but you did't. Instead, you waited until the morning of the procedure that I drove all the way up to Hilo for, to tell me that the procedure would be temporary and that I would be throwing away my money if I were to go through with it. Then the endodontist has the nerve to charge me a consultation fee of $261.26 for something that you now advise me to be not worth my time or money to do. Talk about throwing my money away! This could have all been avoided if you just took a few minutes to explain this with a phone call. This is the worst experience of my life at a dentist. It left a bad taste in my mouth. Don't go to this guy. Go to Hilo Family Dental, 808-333-3600. They offer a sliding scale for people who don't have insurance. read more

Best dentist I've been to and I hate going to the dentist. My first appointment I had with him he got to know me and what I wanted out of my visit with him. My second appointment with him we got straight to work on 4 of my teeth and when I was done it looked perfect! I love the work he did on my teeth. I called reception to schedule an appointment and see if my insurance covered their services. Yes, I was told, you have coverage. Flash forward to sitting in the chair being up sold x-rays, I asked "does my insurance cover this?". Yes I was told. Then my wife visited for a cleaning and was told the same. Months later we get a bill for $500. Call reception again, and she takes no responsibility in the matter but says that she would talk to the Dr and get back to us. Not a word. Months later still we get a notice from a collections agency. I don't know if this was intentional insurance fraud, laziness or irresponsibility on the part of reception or worse but I don't appreciate being sent to collections when I've been told they will get back to me. He's extremely professional, uses cutting-edge technology, and is always looking out for the best interests of my teeth. I had a dental "emergency" last year and he was able to help within minutes, it was great to have a dentist that really cares. My first visits, I was very impressed. My last visit, I asked questions and asked that they email the answers because they needed to check on some things. After a couple of weeks waiting I emailed with more questions, so I could proceed (or not) with what the dentist had suggested. I received a postal letter reply, "... it has become apparent that we are not the best office to deal with your dental needs". Two years ago I moved from Oahu to the Big Island. I found Dr. Charles Sugiyama just by chance and boy oh boy did I get lucky. It was like I threw a dart at a dart board and hit a bullseye! I contacted this office to get my husband in for a tooth he cracked. I was hoping to get in as soon as possible but fully understand that because of COVID it may take a little longer. The person who answered the phone was super rude, completely unprofessional and basically made it clear that they were not looking to have new patients. The person who answered the phone did not want to help me, would sit with long pauses and silence, after 15mins she finally booked my husbands appointment. I did take her advice and called around found a higher rated Dentist and then called them back and cancelled the appointment. The dentist I chose had an awesome front office employee she was super friendly and very helpful. Even though my husband cant get in to see the dentist we booked until later than our original appointment with Dr. Sugiyama, the professionalism was so much better we decided to go with the other dentists office. read more

I just went in for my first appointment with Dr. Sugiyama, and I've got to say, I'm beyond impressed! Never before have I met such a personable and thorough dentist. He does a great job of talking you through everything as he does it. The technology he uses is very up-to-date, and I was able to look at all the X-rays and photographs of my teeth on computer screens as he examined them. You can see that he is a perfectionist in his work and truly cares about me as a patient.
