I'm sure he's a great dentist. I was just referred by a colleague of his on Oahu. His receptionist laughed and said no new patients. I told her I had a quick emergency she didn't inquire what the emergency was, she said they already had 3 emergencies they were trying to fit in. Didn't offer any help or suggestions. No Aloha no kindness. I'm sure Dr Igawa will talk to his colleague at the dental school at some point and hear how people are treated on the phone. It's sad. read more

My husband and I were vacationing on the island when he had a temporary crown fall off and we absolutely could not get it back on. Of course it happens on a Saturday and not many dental offices are open. And the ones that were, refused to help. Seriously. No one. We had the crown, we even had the glue. We just couldn't get the angle right (upper molar) to get it in place. We figured it would take a dentist less than five minutes to get it back in place. But no one was willing. Except for Dr. Igawa. Everyone in his office was extremely kind and very helpful. They saved our vacation since the sensitivity made eating and drinking very difficult. And we wouldn't be going home for another week! If we lived here, Dr. Igawa would be our dentist. He's a thorough and very kind doctor and has an outstanding and friendly staff! read more

Im writing this 10-15 minutes after just calling his office. I asked to schedule a Root Canal procedure and the receptionist was quick to tell me that they dont do root canals, she also sounded confused as if why would I be asking them about root canals... well im confused since his website clearly says he does root canals and he is an endodontist, The receptionist continues to tell me they only do basic dental procedures and root canals are only special cases... I suggest not promoting that root canals are within your regular repertoire of services since my pain and overall health is not a special case. Also maybe train your receptionists to ask questions before cutting off potential new patients. read more

Let me start by saying that I love my dentist back home, I have been going to him for 18 years. I have lived in Hawaii for two years now, and every time I went home to Los Angeles, I made sure I went to my dentist. However, I was due for a cleaning and I will not be home in LA until the end of June, so I after my friend from work recommended Dr. Igawa, I made an appointment. I even got to get in a few days early due to a cancellation they had! Nice office, nice and friendly staff, and awesome dentist. He was very thorough with the cleaning, the explanation of why I need to floss EVERY DAY (which I have been doing since the visit), and the coolest thing, the image of my teeth and the shadows that could become cavities if I don't floss. Love it! If I were not moving back home, I would definitely trust my teeth to Dr. Igawa. read more

Dr Igawa and staff rank right up there with the best mainland offices I have been to over the years. You're very lucky if you can get this relatively young guy as your dentist. I've had a LOT of work done here in the last year and I'm very happy with the health, function, and appearance of Dr Igawa's dental work. TIP: for new patients, they may be booking 6 months in advance so if you do not have a Hawaii dentist yet, don't wait to get one when you have an emergency, go ahead and book an appointment for a cleaning now... so if you have an emergency at some point ...you can get seen faster instead of having to go to some random dentist for your emergency. Of course, I didn't do that..... I dilly-dallied about choosing a new Hawaii dentist until I cracked a tooth and needed a dentist PRONTO. I asked a friend in the big island dental profession (but not general dentistry) who HE would choose if he needed a dentist in Hilo. He recommended two dentists, one of whom was booking new patient appointments a year in advance, and Dr Igawa, whose wait time was (only!) 6 months for new patient appointments. So I made the appointment with Igawa and asked for any sooner cancellation and luckily they actually got me in the office in a few weeks. I already knew that beyond my immediate emergency, I needed a lot of work I had been postponing including multiple crowns and finishing an implant that I had started on the mainland, so I wanted somebody really good. I also wanted the work to be cosmetically thoughtful and reasonably priced. Dr Igawa and his staff has been outstanding. Of course a great deal of the credit for the good experiences I've had here go to his hygienist and receptionist, who are truly a dream team. The best! Things I particularly like: -they keep appointments promptly and never keep me waiting -they're always pleasant -if something doesn't go exactly as planned (which will inevitably happen when you are doing lots of complicated things) Dr Igawa took immediate responsibility and fixed the issue quickly at his expense with no "hemming and hawing." -prices are not outrageous and they were very kind about making a payment plan for me -Dr Igawa regularly goes to advanced training dental classes and conferences and seems very up-to-date on the best new procedures and materials -Dr Igawa actually did my cleaning himself, which was the first time I had a dentist do that. - when I asked him about other technologies that other dentists were advertising, he had very thoughtful and persuasive answers why sometimes the "latest thing" you see advertised is not always the best. - even when I have asked about doing extra procedures, he has been very candid about talking me about of it and staying focused on the most important work first instead of selling me stuff I didn't really need. -when I have questions he takes the time to really explain it What I don't like: not enough car magazines in the waiting room :) Dr Igawa trivia: he's apparently a top golfer on the local circuit read more

Dr Igawa and his staff are truly a Hilo gem. Good care is hard to come by in this town but he is the exception! He did not try to push unnecessary dental procedures yet he is very thorough and does his own dental cleanings. He is kind and his assistants and office clerks are very sweet. read more

Dr. Igawa is a great Dentist. My family and I have been going to him for at least 10 years and trust him for all of our dental needs. We had lots of needs over the years, my 2 girls needed braces and I need an Implant among other things. He was able to refer us out and consistently follow up with us to make sure we were taken care of. 4.5 stars. Wonderful bedside manners - very patient, takes time to explain things, answer questions. Staff is friendly and accommodating. When a finished product was taking longer than hoped for probably based on the difficult nature of the procedure, Dr. Igawa and his staff went out of his way (time and money) to set me up with something temporary so I wouldn't have to travel with a gaping hole in my mouth. -0.5 stars because it's difficult to perfectly match crown/implant color to existing, natural teeth. Excellent Doctor and wonderful bedside manner. Dr. Igawa did a root canal for me a while back and I have had no problems since. I was miserable before and I had gone to other dentists prior to that without any type of resolution. I wish he was still in Kansas City so I could go back. By far the best Dentist I have ever had. Dr. Igawa's communication is excellent. When he's not sure of what might or might not happen when he starts a procedure, you are fully informed. I ended up needing a root canal while he had me under anesthesia and I was thinking "oh no, I have to go to another dentist for this procedure." He then asked if I wanted to get it done right then.... how cool is that?! I went to see him after going to a dentist with a fancy office but my fillings kept falling out and the anesthesia could not be administered correctly (so much for a USC DDS degree!). I had not been in a while due to previous negative experiences, but I no longer hesitate to make appointments or keep them! read more
