Great food and service. The Pita Mozz is a great starter. The feta dressing is unbelievable. I always get the turkey melt. The new location in Madison is almost identical to the downtown location in Jackson. It's a great place to go when the weather is nice to sit outside. read more

Called to let manger know I didn't receive utensils for my to go order. She could've cared less, blamed it on me for not asking... if I pay for a 20 dollar salad, there better be utensils. Not at all impressed. Service was terrible - waited 15 mins for drinks and nearly 45 mins for sandwiches. Fried potato appetizer overcooked on the edges and undercooked in the center. "Spiced beef kebab" was a lukewarm hamburger patty in a pita. Not only was this not Greek; it wasn't even presentable. read more

The food is consistently good. The portions compared to other restaurants of the same genre leaves something to be desired. The prices are quite audacious... I love me some Greek food. Gyro meat was excellent. My husband got the gyro and he really enjoyed it. I got the Greek salad with gyro meat. In today's day of takeout I was disappointed that the lettuce was not cut up at all and the bowl was 90 percent lettuce. There was only one olive 2 small slices of cucumber and a couple slices of tomato. Three packets of crackers rather than a piece of pita bread. ( I'm used to pita with my salads at most middle eastern restaurants). The taziki sauce was good and in the side. There were no napkins or utensils in the to go bag, luckily I had a fork in the car. I think that fir the price there should have been more good stuff and a lot less lettuce. It tasted good but I had to pitch half the lettuce. read more

I got takeout from you tonight. I ordered an gyro. I ordered a grilled chicken gyro. I ordered cottage fries. I ordered hummus. I ordered extra dressing. The cottage fries were soggy and burnt tasting. The grilled chicken gyro was literally half sauce, four pieces of pathetic chicken that were grilled too heavily and hard, three half slices of tomato, and a lot of horrible, droopy onions. The regular gyro was cold. (How do you do that after wrapping it in paper AND tin foil?!) The extra pita was chewy and stale. The hummus was chunky, not well blended, and was nearly 7 dollars for a little side dish. Greedy, much? This whole takeout order was disgusting and shameful and honestly, I want my money back. This is one of my favorite lunch spots when I visit my family in Jackson. You order at the counter, and they call out to you to get your food. Doesn't take them long to fix anything either. I usually get the veggie wrap with mozzarella and their awesome curly fries. My mother usually gets the chicken gyro, and my sister gets their burger. The food is good and the atmosphere is pretty laid back with the food served on plastic trays with paper plates and drinks in styrofoam cups. But it's a cool hole in the wall kinda place in downtown Jackson, I mean it's what Jackson is good for at times... hole in the wall places with good food. Oh and they close at 2:30 so sometimes it's a challenge to get there before they close, but it's well worth it if you can make it for lunch. read more

After reading the other Yelp reviews, I went into Keifer's with solid expectations. Sadly, I was quite disappointed. But let me be fair - this is by no means some Mediterranean restaurant where I expect everything to be top-notch, tradtional, big flavors, etc. I was expecting a solid gyro to satiate that craving. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. Ordered the standard gyro with a side of fries with it. The cashier asks "cottage or curly?" Me, having never heard of cottage fries, asks "what's cottage fries?" "straight-cut fries" "okay I'll take those then", thinking these are your standard fries. I wish I would have listened to Tiffany Y's review and went with curly fries! When my order was ready (the one thing this place did right was make my food hot & fast), I saw the fries were basically humongous chips. Imagine taking a potato and slicing it long-ways so you have chips the size of a potato! Not what I was expecting, but they were messy to eat. In a good way, I guess. I would have definitely preferred the curly fries - my mistake. It was basically eating an entire baked potato, but fried. On to the main meal, the bread & butter of any gyro place, the gyro itself. This was such a HUGE LET DOWN. The only thing going for it was that it was hot. NO TOMATO??? NOT ONE SLICE??? BARELY any onions, the SMALLEST LITTLE PIECES! GIVE ME SOME RED ONION SLICES. What kind of disgrace is that?! You don't even deserve to be called a gyro! I made sure to take a bite of the meat itself to analyze the flavor, and I was honestly disappointed. It was okay at best. The meat was under-seasoned, oily, a little spongy, and somewhat thin. My sandwich was basically meat, pieces of lettuce, and yogurt sauce (which wasn't even that good, mind you). I was bummed out, to say the least. I had to do some kind of investigating. Maybe not getting tomatoes was a fluke, an accident by the chef. But after reading the menu, NOPE. Only comes with lettuce, onions, and sauce. Very sad. This would make your sandwich so much tastier and heartier. Not to mention I saw an entire fridge full of them when I was ordering. Nonetheless, I finished my gyro and left. Regardless of the other reviews, I don't think I will ever come back to Keifer's. I was so disappointed with my lackluster gyro that I am just not willing to try their other menu options (although some of them did sound quite appetizing). RESTAURANT STAFF: If you're reading this, there is NO WAY someone is paying $6 for hummus! You'd have to give me a PLATEFUL, or it would have to be extremely delicious. Since I work downtown, this and Taste of the Island Caribbean are my go-to places when I'm not sure what I want. The service is friendly, the gyro's are tasty and filling, and the atmosphere is exactly what you'd expect from a low key, relaxed local restaurant (at least before the lunch rush. Look, we really had a good time in Jackson, Mississippi. Everyone told us "BEWARE, JACKSON IS LIKE ALL KINDS OF RED NECKS AND RACISTS" but you know what? We LOVED the people we met in Jackson! So... Dear People Hatin' On Jackson, You need to shut up. We went to this place called Keifer's...and while we have had better Mediterranean fare in place with a heavier Mediterranean population, this place was pretty good for what it was working with...that being...(I am assuming) a more modest Greek culture in the area. This was the Tex-Mex version of Greek food - kinda Americanized but still totally yummy. So, haters, go to Keifer's when you are in Jackson and talk to the hard working Keifer's folks about fun things and stop being such punks about the south. There was a long hair in my salad made up of huge pieces of iceberg lettuce, two cucumbers, two olives (with pits), half slice tomato and 3 slices of cold gyro meat. Keifer's used to be a fave spot... I remember when it was located in the food court at Metrocenter Mall! However, it is is definitely not the same, food-wise or otherwise. I called in a food order. Upon getting home, 2 orders were incorrect and the flavor and ingredients were below mediocre. Upon returning to receive the "corrected order," which still did not include my grilled onions (smh), I was offered only an apology. I think the time may have come to say it. Emperor Keifer has no clothes. Back in the day (way back in the day), when choices in Jackson were fewer and foodie standards generally were lower, Keifer's was the go-to place for unique, high quality food and a cool atmosphere. I think, regrettably, that for the past several years they have been resting on their laurels. The decline accelerated when they moved across the street, but it had begun before that. This review is based on several visits over the last year. Each time I have experienced disappointing food and/or service but have decided to give them one more chance. the trend is now well established. The food is just not that special any more. Among the issues: the gyro meat is just typical processed gyro meat that anyplace can buy from Sysco. The baklava was likewise uninspired, tough and dry. I could live with blah food if it came with great service. Surprisingly, the waiters are usually good (today our guy was good and apologetic for the shortcomings -- congrats, you saved your employer from a two-star review); the problem is often with the shift managers. Example: I asked for the falafel to be cut in half before frying so that they would be crispy and not undercooked on the inside, which is a constant problem. The manager refused, let me repeat: REFUSED my request because, according to my waiter, that would result in my getting 10 pieces of falafel instead of 5. I guess third-grade math is not a prerequisite to becoming a manager at Keifer's. In case they read this, ten halves is equal to five wholes; I wasn't trying to scam you out of extra falafel. When they do decide to accommodate a request, you can bet that it will show up on the bill. Want extra pita? Cha-ching! Whole wheat pita? Cha-Ching! Other Greek/Lebanese places treat pita like Mexican places treat chips; if you want more they are happy to provide it gratis. Keifer's prices are definitely on the high end of the range for this type of food, so it's not like they don't have the margin to provide it. Oh, well. The place was hopping and will continue to be, so I doubt they have incentive to change, unless others recognize the way things used to be and expect more. read more

We got the gyro, hummus, dolmas, and falafel for about $26 total. It must have been an off day or something, because this place has such good reviews, but I was hella disappointed today. I did not like the flavors at all! The humus needed more garlic and lemon, and it was chunky! They should have blended the garbanzo beans a little longer. The falafel just tasted like it was deep fried in old oil. The gyro was dry. Greek food is my favorite and I'm sad that this place was such a disappointment. read more

I travel to Jackson almost every other week and lunching at Keifers makes it worth the long haul. My staple is the chicken gyro and curly fries. I have lost count of the number times I have eaten here in the past year but the food has always been consistently tasty. The seasoning on the curly fries is to die for. Only once have I tried the regular beef and lamb gyro but didn't find it as flavorful. Doesn't matter, I will stick to my usual order of the chicken gyro and curly fries. read more

Usually a great place to eat, but must have been off their mark today. I ordered a Gyro with no onions, and shared a cottage fries with my husband. My Gyro was not warm and the meat was dry. There was a big old lettuce leaf stuffed in it gobbed with their cucumber dressing. I had to spoon out the dressing because it was just way, way to much. We sent the fries back because they had apparently been cooked an hour or so prior, waiting on the lunch crowd. I enjoyed the downtown "hole in the wall" vibe better than the food. The service was fast enough for lunch but slightly overpriced after you add on a side. I was disappointed with my meal, given the reviews. I had the Chicken Havne, which sounded delicious, but ended up being soaked in mediocre BBQ sauce and stuffed with far more onions than meat (it also consisted solely of onions, chicken and lettuce, which seems like a lazy recipe). The service was good and the atmosphere is fine. Quaint restaurant with inside and outside seating. You are greeted at the door and handed menus to seat yourself. Very tastefully decorated. We were waited on quickly and our waiter was nice and polite and met our needs without us needing to chase him down. We chose to eat here because it is walking distance from the hospital that my husband will be in for surgery coming up. When I asked if they had a paper menu and explained the situation the lady at the register told she was sorry but they were out of paper menus. BUT...she grabbed one of the laminated menus and let me take it. So now....they not only have customers that are happy they won't have to eat hospital food but they have customers that will shout from the rooftops what great customer service we received! read more
