My wife and I are not textile experts by any means but we knew we wanted a quality rug that was produced ethically and we found a great deal of reassurance from the team at Kebabian's. John and his son Josh are truly experts in their field and about their products. We knew what size rugs we were looking for and it was great to exhaustively review their inventory online before getting to the store, it helped us develop a sense of what we like in colors and patterns. We emailed them a list, made an appointment, and when we arrived everything was ready to go. From there we got an incredible lesson on what makes a high quality rug, we learned about the different dyes, the dying process, the different knots, yarns, patterns, and stories of the people who make and design the rugs, and how they go from the other side of the world to this store in New Haven. I came upon the Kebabian family at the wedding of a friend. A couple months later My wife and I decided we needed a rug to cover some of the sanded wood floors in our home. I nervously reached out to the Kebabian rug company not knowing what to think. Well, the person who reached out to me was Peggy Kebabian. She simply asked me one question. "Jeff what are you looking for and could you please include the size of the rug you need?" The next day I received an email with 8-10 different rugs at various prices. As a rug aficionado and someone who has bought rugs over many years, I can say nothing but good things about the Kebabian family and the quality of their rugs. I had been looking for a 8 x 10 or 9 x 12 rug to replace our rug in our family room for some time. As soon as I saw Kebabian's rugs store online, I went no further. A key ingredient was knowing I was dealing with someone trustworthy and knowledgable. You won't get more professional, skilled and honest rug dealers than the Kebabian family who for many years have hand picked the weavers they work with in Central Asia, and it was clear from talking to John Kebabian that the quality of color dye and the weaving process is a key part of their selection process which was important for me. We have been clients of Kebabian's Rugs since 2014. Many of the rugs in our home were purchased from them and they are each incredibly beautiful and unique. I've never been to Kebabian's in person (I live out of state), but a friend tipped me off about the place, and I'm a huge fan. They know what they're doing, and they do it with extraordinary care and expertise. Gone is the "sleeze factor" that too often plagues rug dealers and the rug business. Gone is the fear that you may be inadvertently contributing to the exploitation of child laborers--Kebabian's goes to great lengths to ensure that their products come from legitimate, legal vendors. Not only that, they plow some of their profits back into educational efforts for young people in the countries where their rugs are made. They regard these rugs as works of art--and that's what they are. For me, the experience of buying a product--especially something that's as big an investment as a handmade rug--is a huge part of the way I feel about that product. We purchased our first Oriental rug, an antique Sarouk, from Kebabian's in 1996 and have remained loyal customers ever since. We have come to know John Kebabian, his lovely family and his awesome staff over the years and would not buy from anyone else. We are in love with Kebabian's! My husband and I went there with a plan to buy rugs for our entire loft. While we were there, we were able to compare the rugs side by side, while they asked us thoughtful questions about the space and our collective taste. They were able to advise us on colors, styles and sizes and offer descriptions of the design and manufacturing processes. For our living room rug, we were torn between two very similar designs and they helped us make a very tough decision! But when we got home, we realized we actually had space for both and turned around and bought the other one, too. We just couldn't get enough! The staff members at Kebabian's were incredibly patient, helpful and kind during our shopping experience. They even made sure we had our rug pads and carried the rugs out to the truck. When you think about buying a rug do you feel overwhelmed? I did, until a friend recommended this store to me. I emailed them ahead of time with the desired dimensions of a rug, my color scheme, and an embarrassing low price range for a hand made, natural fiber rug. Lo and behold, when I arrived they had a number of rugs already pulled for me and the perfect rug at the perfect price practically jumped into my lap. In our world of cheap, generic, polyester/plastic rugs that benefit no one but the corporations who manufacture them, do yourself and the planet a favor and instead support a store like this one. Real people, multi-generational owners and, they pay fair prices to the artisans who actually make these gorgeous rugs - and that is very important to me. Whether it be classic/traditional, antique, vintage, modern, eclectic, custom or my favorite....clearance, they have something for EVERYONE, packaged with a big box of kindness, top notch ethics, customer service, quality, and knowledge. The cherry on top was the feeling of being in a place where everyone knows your name and they genuinely want to make sure you are taken care of....despite the fact they had just met me. In a time of box stores, impersonal shopping experiences, mediocre quality, and bland service, Kebabian's is the exact opposite. John and his entire team go above and beyond to make the experience incredibly fun and enlightening as they share their passion and knowledge of these works of art from around the world. John's own relationships with the weavers and families from the Middle East is particularly beautiful, and it adds nothing but narrative and integrity to his work. Good quality oriental carpets are not only beautiful, but with proper care, they will last for many, many years. While oriental carpets are extraordinarily durable and stain resistant, they benefit from occasional professional washing to remove embedded grit and to restore the vibrancy of the colors. Accidents and unusual wear can also make repairs necessary. We trust only the folks at Kebabian's, who know and understand oriental carpets better than anyone, to handle those services for us. The Kebabian team is responsive, easy to work with and prices are reasonable. Over the years, we've purchased several carpets from Kebabian's (the first in 1975). My wife and I were absolutely lucky in finding Kebabian's Rugs during an online search. We recently were exposed to the beauty of Gabbeh rugs but had very little experience in ensuring purchase of an authentic Gabbeh rug. I love rugs. I flip thru Great Carpets of the World and Carpets of the Orient and before the pandemic would roam the rug district in NYC and look at the rugs at the Met. How lucky am I to have Kebabian's here in New Haven. Kebabian's is local, family owned, has a great variety of antique and new high quality, affordable rugs and the family and staff is so knowledgable, friendly and helpful. I brought swatches and ended up with a large rug that I hadn't even considered and it anchors my whole living room and looks amazing. I love it. It makes me happy every day. Kebabian's is a great place to purchase on Oriental rug. It is a family business that takes pride in their product and their customer service. They have a very good web-site where I was able to look at a wide range of rugs. After finding one on-line, I took the stock number to their store where they quickly found it and another rug that had similar colors. They urged me to take them both home to see how they would look in my home before I made my purchase. Their staff is absolutely terrific. They are experts in Oriental rugs, and they are friendly and no-pressure. The store is surprisingly easy to get to. Parking was not a problem, and it is easier to get in and out than the mall. read more
