There are two things you absolutely have to get here: haloumi cheese salad and the zaaluk. The first is a salad topped with fried pieces of cheese. They bring out unlimited pitas, both white and while wheat. Order a bottle of wine to accompany and they'll come around and make sure your drink is never empty. Great service and great food.

One of the more lively places in Soho…read more Yeah Soho is usually chill and all, everyone does some small talks, sips some wine, but Sahara is something different. The ground floor is, almost intentionally, always overcrowded. As in, at its full capacity, you will have a difficult time getting in or out of the place. But it's great in a way no one actually sits uncomfortably. On the upper floor, which they only open it over weekends, is a semi-secret room that imitates a traditional Arabic/Middle Eastern social lounges (no I have no ideas what I'm talking about, but you'll understand once you are there). People take off their shoes and sit casually on the floor with mats and cushions. Pretty unique experience in Hong Kong. Drinks are okay - nothing fancy, but you have your usual suspects all available here. Shisha are good - very traditional, very raw in taste. Nothing to strong. Imagine Bloop, Boba Bear, or Vibe are like the "connoisseur" of shisha, Sahara will be like the down-to-earth, day-to-day friendly kind of shisha (in terms of taste, not here to recommend anyone to have shisha everyday). The food is surprisingly good. I didn't have the chance to try it until recently (usually I'm only here for drinks and shisha), but I liked their meat platter a lot (I don't know the actual name of the dish). And lastly, staff are utterly fun and friendly - they like to engage with the customers and actively make the place as lively as possible. Also interesting to note that, music (and the staff clapping along the music) is noticeably loud here, but having good chitchat here is not a problem at all. I'm not sure if it's the interior design, but I enjoy all the time I am here with good friends.

Lebanese food holds a special place in my heart after eating at probably one of my favorite…read morerestaurants in Canada. That is to say, I had high hopes for this place, which was compounded by a recommendation from my then-coworker and still-friend. Eating here marked the first time during my time in Hong Kong where I felt outside of Hong Kong (in other words, in the international/expatriate bubble of Hong Kong). Granted, it was still during my early days and against the backdrop of the protests disrupting normal operations, when I had very few opportunities at the time to explore and appreciate all that Hong Kong has to offer. Located in the madness that is Midlevels, expect to walk up some stairs, and then some. This restaurant's entrance is on the side of where you would take one of many escalators, so keep your eyes peeled and/or pay attention to your CityMapper. The price point is typical of an international restaurant on Hong Kong Island: what finance/business people can afford. And on occasion, educators such as myself. You get what you pay for, as Lebanese food is relatively scarce in East Asia. I take what I can get. I really loved the shawarma hummus and eating it with pita. Such a game changer, so tasty, and of course so pricy. I also enjoyed the way they prepared their falafel, their cauliflower, and their chicken. I was quite pleased by their food offerings. My past coworker brought me to eat here, so to pay it forward, I brought my other coworkers to eat here. Presumably the cycle ended with me, but I would definitely love to come back here.

We had their 4 person set meal which allows you to pick two cold appetizers, two hot appetizers, 3 main dishes, 4 soups and 4 drinks for $540. For our cold appetizers, we picked their hummus and eggplant dip. Both came with flat bread (think more tortilla than pita), and both kept us going back for more. For our hot appetizers, we picked eggplants and falafels. The eggplants were perfectly cooked and not mushy. The falafels didn't feel greasy and didn't have that old oil taste. They were mouthfuls of heaven. Our main dishes included beef with potatoes and tomatoes sauce, mutton shawerma with tahini sauce, and sheesh taook with garlic sauce (chicken). All of the main dishes allowed you to pick either rice or criss cut fries. We picked rice for all 3 dishes. The beef tasted really fresh; the chicken was well seasoned and juicy; and the mutton perfectly cooked. The garlic sauce that comes with the chicken is made fresh and was to die for. I also really appreciated the good service. They servers would talk to us, offer us more bread and sauces, and didn't rush us to leave. It was a leisurely paced dinner where we able to catch up with friends, rare in Hong Kong. Lastly, this is located right across from the Southorn Playground in Wan Chai so it's conveniently located and easy to find.

The premise for most Ebeneezer locations boils down to two questions:…read more 1) How drunk are you? 2) How badly do you want pizza / kebabs? If the answer is "a lot," then the food here might actually be worth a look. Their not so unique approach to pizza, Indian cuisine, and kebabs has garnered them enough notoriety amongst expats that they've managed to find themselves in multiple parts of Hong Kong. This location on Ashley is a relatively good one and offers seating, a clean space, and relatively good service. I wish I had better things to say about the food. Most of the Ebeneezer fame has been from kebabs, followed by Indian specialties, and pizza pies. Much of the food lacks quality ingredients I feel, which means most everything is just borderline passable; mediocre for the most part but works in a pinch. It's not all terrible though, I appreciate that they are upfront about their food and offer a speedy experience via online delivery. Service is solid for the most part, which is why I've given them the nod more often than not. It is by no means destination food, but if the cravings are there, then I say have at it. Don't expect much and all should be okay.

As my friend was not a big eater, we only ordered the main course. She had the lamb while I had the ribeye steak which was the best decision I made. Every bite I took on the piece of meat made my taste bud crying out for more! It was succulent, cooked to how it was supposed to be. I enjoyed every pieces of it and I got to try the lamb as well, and that was just amazing. I had lamb previously in Seoul and they certainly don't taste as good as this. This certainly made up the disappointment my friend and I had, missing out on our first choice. The atmosphere of the restaurant certainly feels Middle Eastern style but the service on the other hand was a disappointment. They were slow and I can sense their disappointment when we ordered only the main course. Overall, this place is worth the try!

We waited for a bit and I was wondering if they went to pick their own grapefruit..... And, well they kind of did! I get to talking with him about types of drinks and I happened to mention that I love a good Amarro or Farnet Branca after dinner. Anyway, we order and the first dish is a safron chicken that comes out perfectly cooked. Unique dish served with a great sauce and escarole in a lemony dressing. Then we see the falafel that the other table ordered and remark that we should have ordered that too. The waiter hears us and asks if we also want to order one and we say "why not!". Along comes a perfectly made falafel Egyptian style. Meanwhile, I am still drinking greyhounds and we get our entrees. Mine is a duck risotto with an amazing lemony flavor and crispy duck. My wife had the kabab/skewers of chicken. We finish the meal and the manager remembered our conversation and had gotten a bottle of Amarro. Had a glass of that and a cappuccino to end the night. They have a full bar, the skewers, hammas, and all the mez is served with a more Western flair. So the food is fusion Middle East-Western. I went for a birthday party and the host had rented out the entire bar for the night. The room fits about 40 people comfortably, and the decoration is cozy. I'd definitely go back to hang out. Middle Eastern, Lebanese is a fool-proof pick always. I didn't read the fine print to realize until they told us that it was only the sharing menus for the Eatigo discount. The good part was that they didn't charge the child. You have options to select 4, 6, 8 or 10 dishes and it could be a mix and match from any sections - the hot, the cold, the entrees. We did the usual hummus, baba ganoush, falafel, their nut dip. Besides the usual, we did the Arnabit Batata b'il Tahini - which was seasoned crispy cauliflower florets and spiced potatoes in a rich tahini sauce and a Vegetarian Fousulieh - a hearty and robust Lebanese bean stew, served with Lebanese rice. The hummus, baba ganoush and their nut dip were all good. Their falafels - which they only got two - were probably the best-tasting falafels in Hong Kong and one of the best I've eaten, ever. The aromatics were better than any I've had. My only question to the restaurant or the hospitality industry here - I understand you're portioning it for two, which means one for each (which by default wasn't enough), but you know there's a kid on the table. Would it break your bank if you served three pieces of falafels instead of two? I'm a fan of well seasoned foods, extra seasoned foods, but the Arnabit Batata b'il Tahini felt a bit too much for me. Or that, sided with labne or cacik might've made it perfect by cutting through the herbs and spices of the cauliflower and the potatoes. The bean stew was primarily red and light brown kidney beans. Seasoned to perfection. The rice and vermicelli could've been a bit more crunchier, but no complains there. Overall, the portions were quite little, I thought. But I the flavours were spot on. The presentations were great! Coffee or tea and mini desserts are included in the tasting menu and they were great too. Especially that muddy, spiced coffee. My arak based cocktail was cloyingly sweet with the date syrup. I'm not sure if they used too much of the syrup or paired it with the sweeter version of the arak, but it was too sweet for me. And I don't say that often. But if there's anything anise based, I got to have it. Kesak! :) Photos on the blog - thevegetarianvoyager
