This was a pretty quick stop for us along the Road to Hana. It's a pretty short path, but it's nice to stroll through. The main attraction for us were the rainbow eucalyptus trees. While they were nice here, it was crowded and we enjoyed the ones on the side of the road at mile marker 7 a bit more (those are on private property though). The plants are all pretty along the path. It's kind of like a small, more rugged botanical garden. I thought it was worth a quick stop.

Ke'anae Arboretum located at mile marker 16.7, can be found on your Road To Hana. This arboretum is free, along with parking (paved parking lot located across the street from the arboretum. Be careful when walking over to the arboretum). This arboretum is an easy walk/ hike. Only part of the trail is shaded though, so be sure to bring a hat, wear sun block and deet (tons of mosquitoes). There are many different species of plants that can be seen at this arboretum. You can see rainbow eucalyptus up close and take photos. The rainbow eucalyptus is very unique in which different beautiful pastel colors can be seen as the bark peels away naturally on it's own. But it was disappointed to see that some people had carved their initials in some of the bark though, ruining a perfectly amazing tree. Please note that there are no restrooms at this stop or a guided tour in case that is what you are looking for. We were here for a less than 1 hour but it was nice to get out and stretch our legs. Definitely a nice little stop in case you want to do a light hike and see some beautiful plants and trees that are native to the island.

Beautiful arboretum! Lots of plants and beautiful flowers. Paved part of the way. Feel free to turn back when the gravel gives way to mud. The end is an overwhelming taro field.

Awesome "pit stop" on the road to Hana. Located at the 16.5 mile marker on Hana Highway lies a beautiful oasis amidst the topsy turvy turns of Hana Highway. More than adequate parking (on the left side of the road) and better yet, a paved walking trail that leads to a forest of majestic "rainbow trees," bamboo and blueberry TREES (yes tree...not the bush). There is a great plethora of flora that only a nerdy botanist-wanna-be would be over the moon with. It's a short walk through the arboretum but packed with information about plants and trees. The highlight of this stop were the towering "rainbow" eucalyptus trees. Truly amazing to be enjoying them without the fear of getting hit by cars coming around a blind curve. For the short time that we were here I garnered three huge mosquito bites. No worries though...it's all about the adventure. Bring mosquito repellant if you're not looking for this kind of "adventure." Also, there are two cars in the ditch just beyond the mailbox. Makes me wonder, "Hmmmm!!"

The parking is alongside Hāna Highway. There are actually a few spaces available on one side but you will likely see cars parallel parked on part of the shoulder by the gate entry. The beginning of the trail is a paved sidewalk. We only walked maybe 1/4 mile in. We saw a few varieties of palm trees along with various other trees. There are also some varieties of flowers. By far my favorite tree is the rainbow eucalyptus tree! They are so cool. You can't miss them next to the royal palms, that one section is definitely a picture worthy backdrop. There is a small stream that runs along the left side of the path. A nice short stop along the road to Hāna.

About 16.5 mile marker on the Hana Highway you'll see a sign on the hill side of the road marking entrance to Ke'anae Arboretum. Look for the gate that says don't park in front of it. Then try to find a place to safely park. It's between the YMCA and the Ke'anae town/road sign. The arboretum hasn't been taken care of, its sorta depressing. There's some interesting things, but nothing colorful or vibrant.

Wow. This may be the best, free stop on the Road To Hana. The arboretum offers free admission and free parking, which is rather tucked away, but it's only a 50-meter walk to the park entrance. There are around 7-8 parking spots available nearby to the park. For the free admission it charges, it's definitely displays a great selection of Asian and Pacific-Island plants. There is a great variety of palms, and even a White Apple Tree! Bugs, well, yes, they are very problematic, as they are for every stop on the Road to Hana adventure. It also rains a lot, scattered showers since it's in the middle of the rainforest, so bring an umbrella, or a beach umbrella as we did. There is a paved road in the middle of the arboretum, maybe a 0.5-0.7mile walk one-way. Getting to the plaques displaying the plants' names is rather hard, but the pure variety is breathtaking. Don't miss this stop, it's a great alternative to the Garden of Eden Arboretum, which is $15.00USD per person, while this admission is free. Featuring great variety and beautiful views, it's a must stop, for locals and tourists alike.

Since this place doesn't charge admission, there should be no complaint except for the mosquitoes. If you have insert repellents on you, you can leisurely enjoy all the interesting plants inside the arboretum. If not, you better run faster than the bugs. Most plants are labelled with plaques, but sometimes several plants cluster closely together and you cannot tell which plant the plaque is for It would be nice to include a tiny drawing of the shape of the leave to help reduce the confusion.

Parking is across the street around the corner, this spot off the road to Hana takes about 30 minutes. You'll find trees growing from all over the world. Most are labelled but the area isn't maintained and a bit overgrown. I would suggest wearing closed toe shoes and also using insect repellent if you walk off the trail a bit. I got at least 3 mosquitoe bites in a short period of time. The end of the park has a garden that utilizes a traditional irrigation system, but I couldn't see many plants growing. This past of the park wasn't worth seeing, but this free shop is worth stopping at.

Beautiful arboretum, a nice change of pace from the long drive on the Road to Hana. Look out for the car that tumbled over as soon as you walked in (pictured). We didn't experience any mosquitoes in February.

The playground was a dream: tons of activities to choose from and only 1-2 other families. My review is mainly about the playground but the park was gorgeous, tons of space to run and play, covered picnic areas, and tons of parking. (There is a porta potty which was really the only dim spot for me.) The Kalakupua Playground is really well-taken care of by the neighborhood. Hardly any grafitti, only one tiny area is broken (but it's taped off), and it's very safe - as the entire ground is covered in cut up pieces of tires. There are swing sets on both sides of the playground - and safe toddler swing sets, too. Climbing choices galore, many slides to choose from, a great parkour for kids area, and even a tiered sitting area for parents to wait while their children roam free in the safe, fence-surrounded playground. Truly, truly a gem if you are looking for a playground for your kids. I can't believe we stumbled on it. But we all left so happy: as parents it was nice to let them roam free, my 1-year old daughter knocked out for her nap, and our 6-year old yelled as we were leaving, "Mom, that's a 5-star playground!" I totally agree.

I come here because it's close to my mom's house. So I take a stroll every now and then here…read more Big grassy area. They have pavilions for parties here. They have a nice jungle gym for the keiki for all ages. It's nice for them to play on. They have swings and bucket swings for the younger ones. Just a nicer park overall.
