Pork plate with Mac and fries, smoked wings, and pork fries in the back.
    Bailey B.

3 stars for food / 5 stars for location/atmosphere, so a 4 overall. This little bbq joint is located in Jackson County Park right by a boat rental area. It has a little pier/dock that extends a bit into the lake with tables and chairs where you can dine with a view of the water. The view is beautiful -- the lake pushes up against gorgeous green mountains -- and perfect on a sunny day. The view and location alone make it a highly desirable spot to eat lunch. The inside of the restaurant is pretty typical of a southern bbq joint. Unpretentious, comfortable, a little kitschy in an endearing way. You walk right in and order at the counter. The staff was a little overwhelmed when we walked in and had some trouble keeping our large order straight, but they were friendly and considering how busy they were, it was understandable for sure. Plus, our order came out right, which is all that matters in the end. We had the smoked wings, pulled pork loaded fries, and a pork plate with fries, garlic toast, and macaroni and cheese. We tried the sweet bbq and the ranch as our dipping/drizzling sauces of choice. The food was okay to good, depending on the item. Weakest link was probably the macaroni and cheese, which had a very thin, anemic cheese sauce that didn't taste like much of anything. The crinkle cut fries were maybe a little underdone but salted perfectly. They went well with the ranch. The pork itself was pulled a little too finely for our tastes, making it a little mushy. It was also lacking a little bit of smoke flavor. However, we really liked the bbq sauce; it was a great balance of sweet and vinegary, and its addition helped make the pork better. The best thing was definitely the smoked wings. My only complaint is they were maybe a tiny bit dry, but they had excellent smoke flavor and a good texture -- not tough or anything. The garlic toast was also surprisingly delicious. Not soggy at all, crispy crust, and perfectly toasty. If you're looking for a fun road trip from Huntsville (like us) or if you just want to enjoy some beautiful weather by the water, KC's is definitely worth a try!

Well defined smoke bark on the brisket

Scenic, serene little bbq joint that sits on the water. Just about 15 minutes from Unclaimed Baggage if you are in the area seeing that. First-get the brisket-no really the brisket is the best I've had across multiple states. It's got a good bark line, and is tender and juicy-no knife or fork required. Their classic bbq sauce is a perfect compliment. The potato salad and Mayo slaw were good too-solid sides. But the brisket-oh man. The wings were smoked evenly and we're just as good. You can't beat the price, the food is excellent, and the patio view on the waterfront during the fall season when the leaves are changing is just perfect. Delicious! All the way!

The view on the back patio is amazing. It was breezy and beautiful on the lake today. Food was good. Will return if we're ever in the area again. Driving through the campsite made me really want to stay there at some point. Pros: the fries were nice and crunchy. The hash brown casserole was really good and reminded me of Cracker Barrel's. Chicken was cooked good and was easy to get off of the bone. Cons: No vegetarian options. Small portion on the hash-brown casserole and no eco friendly dish ware. Also, the ranch was pretty runny.

Visited for lunch on Thursday and was unfortunately sorely disappointed…read more I arrived at about 12:45 and found a fairly full parking lot. The lot is a little torn up but not too bad. It's easy to get in and out. Walked around to the front and stood in the entryway for a few minutes. Didn't know the protocol since it was my first visit. Eventually, a waitress said loudly from the drink machine to seat myself, so I selected an empty booth near the kitchen. There's a lot of seating inside. I'd say the restaurant was about 1/3 full. Idk where people park when they're at capacity lol. Waitress came over and somewhat incredulously asked if I was by myself, which I confirmed. She pushed a scrap of white paper in front of me and told me to circle what I wanted and she'd pick it up. Eh...okay. It was a limited menu of meat + 3 combinations. They advertise breakfast till 1 as well as burgers and sandwiches but none of that was on there. However, the waitress' demeanor can only be described as frosty, and fortunately I was okay with my choices, so I kept to myself. But a part of me was kind of curious about breakfast for lunch. Alas. She returned with my tea wordlessly and swiped up my slip with my order. I circled a fried chicken breast with "potato patties" and fried okra. The sweet tea was the best thing I had and I enjoyed drinking it while I waited for my food. No refills or to go cups were ever offered though. I will grant the food came out fairly fast...but it also came out cold. Well, the chicken and potatoes were approximating room temperature, but the okra wasn't even lukewarm. My grouchy waitress also didn't give me any silverware and ran off before I could ask for any. I had to hunt down a different, only marginally less grouchy waitress so I could eat my food with a fork. It's a shame the okra was cold because it had a hint of potential; the breading was sort of cornmeal-y and might have once been crispy. As it was, it wasn't good at all -- the cold okra got slimy. The chicken was passable but also not nearly hot enough. The breading also needed more seasoning. The potato patties were...not patties? I was expecting something like a Jojo (small crispy potato round, thicker than a chip) or at least something circular lol, but instead I got two scoops of a sort of whipped potato casserole. This would've also been alright except it was lukewarm and, even worse, absolutely replete with still-crunchy large pieces of onion. Couldn't get a mouthful without them and left with much smellier breath. The one redeeming factor other than the tea was the bread basket: two yeast rolls and a hunk of cornbread. The cornbread was awful (bland and dry), but the yeast rolls were soft and warm and about the only food item I legitimately enjoyed -- even though, once again, my waitress left me hanging with no butter. I really couldn't wait to get out as I felt terribly unwelcome, so as soon as I ate what I could stomach I went to the marginally less unfriendly waitress and paid at the register. The price was decent (~$15 before tip). I did still tip, but I was salty -- legitimately some of the worst service I've had in a long time. I'm forgiving of long wait times and forgotten stuff, but I really don't like callous attitudes when I do my best to be pleasant and accommodating. Definitely wouldn't return. 2 stars because the food was edible and the place was clean enough. The hunt for a decent lunch in Scottsboro continues.

I made sure this was a place to stop since it is a novelty to me as there are none in the area where I live. I told my Dad about it before we left and he was on board as he never had it before. As we neared Scottsboro I was getting hungrier with each mile ticked off. We had had a late breakfast and snacks in between but we hadn't had a meal, per se. Coming down the four lane and seeing the big W in the sky I knew it was time. Pulled in and right into a spot. Went inside and kind of already knew what I wanted and knew my Dad would get his old reliable, bacon cheeseburger. I got the Double Meat Whataburger Whatameal. Everything on it as described. Went with the fries as my side and waited for the food to be ready. We got our drinks and napkins, found a table and sat our table number on the top and waited for our food. They must have been training a new employee that day, or so it seemed. There weren't too many smiling faces there as the manager, maybe, was overseeing the employee with the name tag "Paco Taco" putting in our order. He also served us our food and wasn't very enthusiastic about it. Once we had our food and got our choice of ketchup, one regular and one spicy for me, we started to dig into the food. Thinking my Dad was going to have something positive to say about this experience since he never had it before, but I was disappointed by it. He wasn't impressed and probably would have preferred going to a chain he already knew. Me, on the other hand, really dug into my food...well the portions of it that weren't falling all over the place. It did not matter how I held this burger, how far up I kept the wrapper, I ended up dropping something off of it with each bite. Onions, lettuce, pieces of tomato all falling out and onto the floor. Not even attempting to hit the table, but just straight to the floor or down the front of my shirt. It's always fun attempting to get mustard out of your white shirt. As for the fries, I feel like they were appropriately cooked, but held in a warmer for far to long before being served. They started to have that soggy effect that you get if they sit too long after frying. Was it worth the wait since the last time I had Whataburger? Yes. Should I have lowered my expectations walking through the door? Also yes. I would like to chalk this up to them just opening, but it appears they have been open a few years.

Honestly, it sort of looks like home from the outside, too! There's a sweet memorial for a dog who has passed near the front door, honoring their favorite spot, which I thought was precious. Even though I popped in only like 35 minutes til close, I was welcomed warmly and not rushed. Their menu has American classics like hamburgers, chicken tenders, sandwiches, hot dogs, onion rings, fries, etc. It seems like burgers are the main attraction here, though, so I got their take on a mushroom and Swiss burger (my fav) and some French fries. The sweet tea I had to drink was perfectly refreshing and quite sweet, just the way I like it. I do remember thinking the total was a touch high for a single patty, fairly thin burger, but it is what it is. At least it was clearly fresh and high quality, which is much more than you can say for fast food. Like I said, food was cooked fresh but still came out to me in a timely manner. Heck, the fries were still so hot I burned my mouth a teeny bit! I was just trying to eat and get out of their hair before closing, so my bad there haha. Frozen-fried crinkle cuts but they were nice and crispy. My biggest complaint about the whole experience was the salt was sort of just thrown on them in a pile at the top. So a few fries were extremelyyyyy salty and others not at all. The burger was, as expected, the star here! Cooked about medium-well, it was still plenty juicy despite the relative thinness of the patty. The mushrooms and Swiss cheese were so buttery and melty together. They add bacon to their mushroom and Swiss and honestly I could take it or leave it. Some of it wasn't as crispy as I prefer, and I think the mushrooms add the extra savory punch so bacon makes it a little heavy, but I'm honestly nit picking here. It was a very yummy burger. I very much enjoyed myself. This is the kind of spot my folks would love, so I hope to bring them back in the future, and also to come try the delightful-sounding Moon Pie banana pudding!

Chips and salsa were brought to the table without having to ask, which is always a welcome touch. Service was attentive considering there was only one server handling the floor. Props to them for keeping things running smoothly. The food was middle-of-the-road -- not the best Mexican I've had, but certainly not the worst either. If you're looking for a solid, no-surprises meal, it'll do the job. The atmosphere is actually one of the highlights. It's a nice bar setting, well-lit, and wasn't overly loud during our early visit -- easy to hold a conversation, which isn't always a given at a bar. Now, the restrooms could use some attention. They're a bit dated and in need of updating. I did get a chuckle out of the handwashing requirement sign posted prominently on the wall -- right next to the one soap dispenser that happened to be completely empty. It makes you wonder how closely that policy is actually enforced. Overall, La Cabaña by JUAN is a fine spot for drinks and a casual bite. Just maybe bring your own hand sanitizer.
