I've been craving Japanese curry and Korean kimbap and was able to fulfill both at KCM! I usually get curry on the east side of the state and it is nice to have an option in GR. The katsu is tender and juicy despite what you would expect with such thick pieces of meat. Veggie Kimbap has Mayo in it which added tang and sweetness. Order with Mayo if you're looking for more traditional kimbap. If you've ever prepped and made kimbap on your own, I appreciate the convenience of being able to order one. They are also wider/larger than traditional kimbap, and smaller than the sushi burritos at Jaku. Tamago Sando - Great if you're craving egg salad and I love the white bread they use. Tamago Sando - delicious and simple Chicken Katsu Sando - chicken was crispy and not dry, good amount of sauce (got the Katsu Sando last time, meat was kinda tough) Smoked Salmon Kimbap - some restaurants put in too much of one ingredient (lookin' at you, cream cheese) but this was perfect. Very cohesive and did not fall apart The restaurant is aesthetically pleasing and has a lot of natural light. This is mostly a carryout Japanese Restaurant. It's a small space with only a couple of tables. It is very clean and bright though. I ordered the Katsu Sando ($9) and the Curry Rice ($11). The Katsu Sando is a Pork Cutlet Sandwich. It was very good, with a juicy cutlet and lots of flavor. The only cons are it was a tad small and you should eat it right away, because juiciness of sandwich saturates the bread. The Curry Rice was simply excellent. I kinda fell in love with it. A complex flavor, but nothing out there either. The rice was perfectly cooked and just blended perfectly. The Miso soup that came with it was great too. They also serve Japanese Soda: Calpico. The service was excelle nt and super friendly and very efficient. There online ordering works perfectly. Overall a 5 star review. KCM is where I go whenever I'm craving katsu and curry. I've gone here a couple times now and it never disappoints. The curry is always flavorful without being too salty. The only thing I'd say is the chicken katsu is cut in thick pieces rather than flattened, and could be a little more flavorful. But I do appreciate the balance of the katsu with curry and how everything is pieced together. It comes with some radish and miso soup! The nice thing too is the katsu never tastes oily or greasy. It was my first time trying the kalbi tacos and they were delicious! Definitely has a kick of spiciness to it and lots of flavor. People who work here are always welcoming. You order your food at the counter when you enter, a number is given to you to place on your table and they bring your food out to you. KCM is open and I'm so excited! The owner is Korean and his wife is Japanese, so they opened up a restaurant serving up all their favorites that they make at home. That means we finally have a place to get Japanese curry here in Grand Rapids! They also specialize in katsu (fried protein, either chicken or pork), katsu sandwiches, and kimbap (rice rolls, "Korean sushi"). I ordered the pork katsu sandwich and the tuna and crab salad kimbap to go to share with my boyfriend. The food is made fresh to order so they told me it would take about 15 minutes. That is well worth it for this food! The katsu sando was very tasty, with crispy fried pork that was super juicy inside, on fresh white bread with some sauce. It's simple food but very delicious. The kimbap absolutely blew me away! As a Korean American, I've grown up eating kimbap and it's difficult to find regularly in GR, until now. I ordered the spicy kimbap and chicken katsu curry. First thing that surprised me was that the kimbap was made like a burrito rather than a sliced roll. Being large as it is made it harder to eat with bites having off portions of filling (fish tofu, pickled yellow radish, eggs) and the seaweed wrap difficult to bite off. The katsu chicken pieces were thick chunks as opposed to a flattened patty. The meat was tender and the batter thin. The curry had the expected typical flavor. It was served with a thick, sweet brown sauce which made the dish. It was served with a small bowl of bland miso soup and strong pickled daikon. There was a set of 2 inari's per order and they were huge, which filled me right up! I enjoyed the taste of the tacos, but they had some chewy tendons in the meat that I had to spit out. The chicken katsu sando was also very savory, but the bread was just plain white bread with no flavor and a bit stale that day. I wish they used a different bread for such a tender and delicious chicken. Located in the former Gaia (closed years ago and now reopened on the north side of GR) location in East Hills it's a double store front (same footprint as Gaia was). They've painted the interior all white with minimalist decor. The kitchen is open on one side with bar/kitchen seating with the opposite side filled with tables and chairs. Easy street parking (park mobile and MOTU). Menu is really interesting and something completely different than what's currently being offered anywhere else in GR. Love the addition! It was really filling because it came with the two sides of rice and the miso soup. Katsu - The outer coat of the fried pork cutlet was amazing. Very crisp and nice, but one time I went I thought it was a bit dry. It was really savory, and eating it with the side of the cabbage and the katsu sauce really helped. Spicy Odeng Kimbap - has a kick that will always just makes me crave more and more. The oden and the danmuzi is a great combination. The place is really clean. KCM is a great addition to Grand Radpis offering fusion Japanese and Korean. I randomly found this restaurant from Google Search last year, and since then it's one my favorite place to visit. Their specialty is Katsu and it's rare to find this quality in this area. I've tried many similar restaurants in East side of Michigan where more diverse - Novi, Ann Arbor, Detroit, etc. By far KCM rocked the menu pretty well! Due to the COVID-19, I've ordered carryout but the food has been a great after 1.5 hour driving. Online ordering system is super convenient and the food always came right at the time. I've tried a quite a few items, and most of them were delicious. - Kimbap: try tuna & crab! It's the BEST! I was not a big fan of egg & bacon but good to try. - Sando: great portion and thickness of meat. - Katsu: Hire is super tender. Shoulder cut is my favorite with more texture. Try the one with curry if you like Japanese style curry. - Spicy kalbi taco: flour tortilla could be better than corn tortilla. Shell became too hard after driving too long. If you live nearby, I'm sure the quality of food is much better. For Kalbi meats, I think they use the same meat as spicy Butadon? - Butadon: not overly spicy or sweet. Portion seems a little smaller than Katsu menu, but good enough. Only compliant? Wish this place was closer to my house. For now, KCM became my treats for a monthly ordering from Kalamazoo (or more frequent as much as this winter weather allows). Many small restaurants are struggling with the pandemic, and I thought KCM was brave to open a new business during this unprecedented time. 4.5 Some high-quality chicken katsu right here! I get it with the spicy mustard and it's just perfect. The staff are so friendly and accommodating. Even though they're busy in the kitchen, they always come out to check on customers. The space is clean with lots of light (though it could use a paint color, a cushion or a plant or something), but I could literally eat here every day. The one drawback? Prices. $18 for katsu and $5 for a matcha soft serve (HIGHLY recommend) makes for one of the more pricey lunches in Grand Rapids. It's not financially accessible to everyone, which I wish it was.
