KCM is a cute restaurant with fast service. We were the only people in here when we walked in at 6 PM on a Thursday but it quickly filled up throughout our stay. You order at the kiosk up front and your food will be at your table in under 10-15 minutes. I personally didn't LOVE what I ordered but my partner really enjoyed it. Nothing wrong with the meal, I think I just ordered the wrong thing. I'll have to come back and try more things. They also have Matcha ice-cream that I have to come and check out!
I've been wanting to come here for years due to so many friends' recommendations. I finally went with a friend who was a regular at the restaurant and had recently come back from a trip to Japan. The restaurant is right in East GR, somewhat on the edge, which makes it really nice for parking and general traffic. There are some paid parking spots right outside the restaurant but also some side streets. The outside of the restaurant looks quite small, but the inside is much larger than I anticipated. You order at a little checkout counter at the front, where you can also do takeout orders. There are several tables and an area with free water. The staff was friendly and I like the chill vibe with just the walk up counter and no table service. They offer full sized meals as well as a lunch/mini option for some of the dishes like kimbap. I ended up getting the mini katsu kimbap with miso soup. The mini kimbap were fairly large and had a good amount of filling. I actually was not prepared for how large they would be and ended up only finishing one and took the other to go. It was very tasty and everything felt very balanced in terms of flavor and texture. I also got the matcha ice cream. Again, the portion was much larger than i was anticipating and the matcha flavor was decently strong. The matcha powder they put on top is quite dry and I did accidentally choke on it but that is 100% a me issue so please don't make the same silly mistake I did. Overall I'd highly recommend this restaurant for both dine-in and takeout. The food is quality and the portions are worth the price.
I came here for the first time for lunch over the weekend. The staff are very welcoming and the food comes out fairly quickly! We got the tacos and the chicken sando and both were delicious. I did prefer the tacos though :) There is plenty of seating and it is a very minimalistic concept restaurant with your food served on trays and felt very much like it did when I've traveled to Asia! I highly recommend if you're looking for some good Korean food!
Gosh I love KCM. I think they really filled a gap in the Grand Rapids food scene with the menu they offer. I love their spot on diamond, it feels like the perfect size and I love the fast casual aspect of this restaurant while still serving some incredible food. I have tried a handful of items from their menu including the Kaki Fry (deep fried oysters), Kimbap, and curries. I consistently go back to the Katsu curry. I've tried both the chicken and the hire and though they are both great, I prefer the pork! I would recommend this dish and spot to anyone looking for a tasty meal in GR. It's a big sized portion, the rice is cooked perfectly, and the curry is the perfect amount of spice/kick.
KCM, I don't understand all the 5 stars. Famous for curry so I got the hire katsu curry, same as Tonkatsu but thicker cut. Is it good, yes it is good. But same as other curry in other Japanese restaurant. I can't tell any other difference. Also the pork is too pink in the center for my liking and the batter is not crispy enough. They should switch to thinner Tonkatsu if they can't control the cooking time
Y'all need to run, not walk, to this place!!! I came after seeing that the New York Times called the chicken Katsu curry one of the best meals they had that year! Here's an article that's free since you may need a subscription to see the NYT article: "https://www.mlive.com/public-interest/2023/12/grand-rapids-katsu-curry-makes-new-york-times-national-best-dish-list.html?outputType=amp" The place is so unique, place is clean and their process and service of giving food and picking it up after you're done works very well. I've never had Japanese food before and it was delightful. Apparently this place has both Japanese and Korean food. We ordered Spicy Butadon, Chicken Katsu Curry, Smoked Salmon Kimbap and Spam Musubi. I'll attach pictures! This foods is perfect for all seasons but is an especially cozy meal to have in the fall and winter.
Had been meaning to come in for a long time and finally made it out for my birthday! I tried the ebi fry which was shrimp tempura. It was so crispy and cooked very well. The portion was great and came with rice, cabbage salad, pickle, and soup. The black Sesame dressing for the salad was to die for! My husband got the spam musubi, which is one of his favorite things so his bar was high. He loved it and said it was authentic! A bit hard to eat but he didn't let it slow him down. I can't wait to come back.
This place is phenomenal and has amazing chicken katsu sandos, curry plates, inari (even filled with egg), musubis, toasts and other great rare Japanese fare. Also a wide assortment of authentic and unique Japanese beverages as well. Great service that is prompt, food is taken out to you, and many tables in a cozy and quaint yet spacious diner-like interior. Also featured by The NY Times. Most highly recommended!
Stopped in for lunch and was it was a very nice meal. You can tell that the staff cared about providing tasty food. It was so good I came back for dinner.
My word. This place is a gem. I had heard nothing but praise for KCM after they were mentioned in the New York Times or something, yet it took me months to finally give this little counter-service joint a shot. Right off the bat, this place has no frills - and I love it. There's a minimalist dining room next to a counter/bar where you can place your order which will then be brought to your table. I ordered the Hire pork cutlet curry, as I am uncultured and expected the pork to be more like a pork belly. Nope, it was instead the most tender, juicy and perfectly seasoned pork loin I have ever eaten. It literally fell apart like chicken does, which I have never experienced with pork. The curry was also phenomenal. To somebody who's never had it before - think of it kind of like an Asian gumbo or a really loose chili. It was so fragrant and warm and whole, eating it made me feel like I was receiving a hug from a loved one. It was perfectly balanced with the pillowy sushi rice and the salty, crispy katsu. The dish also comes with other accoutrements, such as a fantastic miso soup, a sort of cabbage slaw, and a sauce that I do not recognize but was spectacular. Kind of like a Smokey, thicker soy/teriyaki sauce? Definitely the bomb. And if you like wasabi, ask for the spicy mustard - it's just a perfect touch to the dish if that's what you're into. Overall this place is phenomenal. The ambiance is great for a lunch or a weeknight meal, and if you've never had katsu curry, this is the time, place and opportunity for you to become enlightened.
If you've never been to KCM, I recommend adding this place to your list now. Yesterday even. The food here is so delicious and hits the spot EVERY TIME. I have two favorite items: the spam musubi and the egg and bacon kimbap. I absolutely love both of these things and will be a happy camper after eating either. The chicken katsu curry is also super great! Love the crispy chicken and the rich flavor from the curry. Besides the food being phenomenal, the staff is always incredibly kind. I have only ever had the best service here. The inside is white and minimal with some cute accents here and there. For a delicious summer treat, the matcha soft serve icecream is beyond delicious! Tastes so good I'm sad when it's gone. Please check this place out and support them when you can! You can dine in or get take out!
I went for a late working lunch, finally trying KCM out. They were busy with takeout orders but both staff in front of the house greeted me right away (friendly ). I was going to order the tuna/crab kimbap after hearing good things about their toast version, but I don't eat imitation crab. I landed on the chicken katsu sando and was not disappointed. The chicken was perfect level of "moist", the breading was a thin layer (it was 90% chicken, 10% breading). I can't normally eat fried food and this I could. It's served in white bread and has some cabbage (decent amount), sauce (solid amount), and a special mayo (light layer). There's a piece of chicken plated as well. I also ordered the daikon/fuji apple pickled. It's a refreshing crunch with just the right amount of tang and lightly sweet, that complimented the sando well. It's one that I walked away going "I need to try and replicated this pickled salad at home!" So many alternatives for the next time, not sure how I'll be able to choose. The matcha soft serve ice cream - solid 10/10. I declined matcha powder on top, but that's also an option. It's served in a waffle cone OR you can get it in a cup. I have to say this was creamy, earthy (matcha), just the right amount of slightly sweet, matcha goodness. It's a good thing I don't live closer, because this would be a summer go-to treat... You're given a cup with your order. It was my first time and had no idea where the drinks were, let alone that there was a whole other seating section beyond the front of the house. It wasn't a big deal, since I bring water with me wherever I go, and a quick ask would've solved this mystery. I only discovered all of there was a whole other section when other patrons came in . Overall rating: Service: 10/10 Portion-to-price: 10/10 Ingredients: 9/10 Speed: 10/10 Menu: 10/10 Set-up: 8/10
My friends treated me to a delicious meal and recommended the Hire Katsu Curry! The dish is full of FLAVOR and you won't want to stop eating it! Make sure to grab a Matcha ice cream!

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Michigan if not my favorite. Hire katsu curry is my favorite but everything else I've had has been at least very good. Service is quick and ambiance is no frills but at least they have a seating area. Love this place! read more

I've been craving Japanese curry and Korean kimbap and was able to fulfill both at KCM! I usually get curry on the east side of the state and it is nice to have an option in GR. The katsu is tender and juicy despite what you would expect with such thick pieces of meat. Veggie Kimbap has Mayo in it which added tang and sweetness. Order with Mayo if you're looking for more traditional kimbap. If you've ever prepped and made kimbap on your own, I appreciate the convenience of being able to order one. They are also wider/larger than traditional kimbap, and smaller than the sushi burritos at Jaku. Tamago Sando - Great if you're craving egg salad and I love the white bread they use. Katsu Sando - Soo tender and juicy. Even great later as cold leftovers (not the bread though). read more

I find myself coming back to KCM over and over. There is something about the excellent simplicity of their food; there is definitely attention to detail. The chicken katsu sando is a scrumptious meal, well presented and solid in flavor. The tuna and crab inari was pretty gosh dang divine! They stuff that bad boy and its subtle sweetness is heavenly. The prices are solid for what you get. And the dining space is larger than expected. It's becoming a popular spot so it can be a bit busy! read more

Happy to see there is a place in Grand Rapids to grab a tamago sando! I have gotten take out twice and the food is always fresh. Tamago Sando - delicious and simple Chicken Katsu Sando - chicken was crispy and not dry, good amount of sauce (got the Katsu Sando last time, meat was kinda tough) Smoked Salmon Kimbap - some restaurants put in too much of one ingredient (lookin' at you, cream cheese) but this was perfect. Very cohesive and did not fall apart The restaurant is aesthetically pleasing and has a lot of natural light. A couple things to note is the inside smelled strongly of fried oil and our order was not ready on both occasions despite arriving 10mins after the pick up time. read more
This is mostly a carryout Japanese Restaurant. It's a small space with only a couple of tables. It is very clean and bright though. I ordered the Katsu Sando ($9) and the Curry Rice ($11). The Katsu Sando is a Pork Cutlet Sandwich. It was very good, with a juicy cutlet and lots of flavor. The only cons are it was a tad small and you should eat it right away, because juiciness of sandwich saturates the bread. The Curry Rice was simply excellent. I kinda fell in love with it. A complex flavor, but nothing out there either. The rice was perfectly cooked and just blended perfectly. The Miso soup that came with it was great too. They also serve Japanese Soda: Calpico. The service was excelle nt and super friendly and very efficient. There online ordering works perfectly. Overall a 5 star review. I will be back for that Curry Rice and there are lots of other things I look forward to trying also. Itadakimasu. read more
KCM deserves every single 5-star review that it has earned. What a gem! I had lunch here today and enjoyed my food so very much. The menu offers something for everyone, including vegetarian options. The Spicy Kimbap was in a word; delicious. Soft, perfectly cooked rice, tasty fish cake, pickled radish... I'll order this again without doubt! It's the elevated, so much more impressive answer to your California/basic maki roll craving. The tamago inari was everything I wanted it to be- tasty af. The location is great with tons of free street parking throughout the neighborhood! Their business is set up for ordering at the counter and using a table number for your food to be brought out to you. I appreciated their water station for self service! Consider KCM your new go-to spot when seeking fresh, well-crafted, flavorful and reasonably priced fare- all nestled on one of the best little corners in our East Hills community. read more

Smaller place, not the fanciest but cute enough for a hangout. Service was straightforward: you pay at the front and eat in the side room. The food was delicious. The taco was spicier than I expected but very tasty. It was my first time trying Japanese curry, and now I'm obsessed with it. I will definitely go back a few time! read more

This doesn't look like much on the outside but it's a decent place to go! I really enjoyed the Katsu Curry and the Katsu Sando, they're spicier than you think! But the flavor was great and I would absolutely come back to enjoy more Korean inspired food. The inside isn't something super special and pretty plain. It's counter service but has a lot of seating. The decor though, is lackluster and could use a bit more personality. read more

KCM is where I go whenever I'm craving katsu and curry. I've gone here a couple times now and it never disappoints. The curry is always flavorful without being too salty. The only thing I'd say is the chicken katsu is cut in thick pieces rather than flattened, and could be a little more flavorful. But I do appreciate the balance of the katsu with curry and how everything is pieced together. It comes with some radish and miso soup! The nice thing too is the katsu never tastes oily or greasy. It was my first time trying the kalbi tacos and they were delicious! Definitely has a kick of spiciness to it and lots of flavor. People who work here are always welcoming. You order your food at the counter when you enter, a number is given to you to place on your table and they bring your food out to you. While you're eating, people will even come by to make sure everything is tasting good and will ask if you need anything even though it's not really a table service place. I appreciate the ambience as it is minimally aesthetic, and always looks clean! read more

One of my favorite places to get comfort food in GR. Love being able to grab a quick bite. It's a great place for groups too. Everyone orders at the counter then the food is brought to you at the table. read more
KCM is open and I'm so excited! The owner is Korean and his wife is Japanese, so they opened up a restaurant serving up all their favorites that they make at home. That means we finally have a place to get Japanese curry here in Grand Rapids! They also specialize in katsu (fried protein, either chicken or pork), katsu sandwiches, and kimbap (rice rolls, "Korean sushi"). I ordered the pork katsu sandwich and the tuna and crab salad kimbap to go to share with my boyfriend. The food is made fresh to order so they told me it would take about 15 minutes. That is well worth it for this food! The katsu sando was very tasty, with crispy fried pork that was super juicy inside, on fresh white bread with some sauce. It's simple food but very delicious. The kimbap absolutely blew me away! As a Korean American, I've grown up eating kimbap and it's difficult to find regularly in GR, until now. The tuna and crab salad was savory and creamy, and the roll also had fluffy egg, steamed spinach, and crisp radish. I couldn't stop talking about how delicious it was, and I'm still thinking about it days later. I can't wait to try everything on the menu and I hope KCM does well in this location. read more

The kimbap was great, I liked the veggies a lot. I personally like smaller pieces and not the burrito style, but I'm sure you can ask for the smaller pieces. They are very quick and efficient with their service. I've eaten there and taken out before and I had no problems with both. The place is very nice and comforting, kitchen out in front and seating areas in the back! Very good. read more

KCM is so good and super convenient! Their sandwiches and meals are so good everyone who's got it with me loves it too. They have a super cute casual seating area and takeout is very easy. So I'm updating my review as it's been a good amount of times now that I have had their tuna and crab gimbap. It's the best! If I only come here for that then so be it. It's so good and a great choice for when I am in a hurry in between work for a quick takeout lunch. Service is great and you can call ahead or order when you get there, it doesn't take more than ten minutes for your food to be ready. Highly recommend! read more

This place has pretty good food and satisfies my kimbap cravings :) I get take out from here almost every weekend. The vibes are chill with a nice seating area. I specifically really like the spicy kimbap, tuna and crab inari, and spicy kalbi tacos. Ordering to-go is quick and simple with not too long of a wait time. read more
Cafe style dining where you place your order, grab a number, then your food is brought out. The inside entrance is cramped, but there's actually a larger dining area on the other side of the wall. I ordered the spicy kimbap and chicken katsu curry. First thing that surprised me was that the kimbap was made like a burrito rather than a sliced roll. Being large as it is made it harder to eat with bites having off portions of filling (fish tofu, pickled yellow radish, eggs) and the seaweed wrap difficult to bite off. The katsu chicken pieces were thick chunks as opposed to a flattened patty. The meat was tender and the batter thin. The curry had the expected typical flavor. It was served with a thick, sweet brown sauce which made the dish. It was served with a small bowl of bland miso soup and strong pickled daikon. Overall, food was decent but not as expected. read more

When I heard a katsu place had opened up in GR, I had my doubts so it took me a little while to make my way over to KCM. I'm so happy to say that KCM has never disappointed me - tender katsu, the perfectly chosen side dishes, and even the clean black and white interior bring me back at LEAST once a month!! Although everything I've tried on the menu so far is amazing, I'd say Hire Katsu is my go-to and is a safe choice if it's your first time. It comes with miso soup, pickled radish, rice, and my favorite - cabbage salad with I believe a sesame dressing(?) Street parking is available and plenty of seating inside. You can buy a drink or get a cup for self served water. read more

KCM is a good place to grab a quick bite to eat with a friend for lunch. Located in the former Gaia (closed years ago and now reopened on the north side of GR) location in East Hills it's a double store front (same footprint as Gaia was). They've painted the interior all white with minimalist decor. The kitchen is open on one side with bar/kitchen seating with the opposite side filled with tables and chairs. Easy street parking (park mobile and MOTU). Menu is really interesting and something completely different than what's currently being offered anywhere else in GR. Love the addition! Ordered the Spicy Butadon (pork) and it was quite tasty. Great flavor with a side of white rice. It also came with miso soup and pickled veg side. Friend ordered the tacos and it was the same meat. She let me try a bite and it was, in my opinion, better than the meat alone when paired with the warm/soft corn tortilla and slaw. read more

I would say KCM is a decent place to go to if you want Katsu, curry, sushi burritos, or Sandos. Basic Katsu Curry - A great combination of curry and Katsu. It was really filling because it came with the two sides of rice and the miso soup. Katsu - The outer coat of the fried pork cutlet was amazing. Very crisp and nice, but one time I went I thought it was a bit dry. It was really savory, and eating it with the side of the cabbage and the katsu sauce really helped. Spicy Odeng Kimbap - has a kick that will always just makes me crave more and more. The oden and the danmuzi is a great combination. The place is really clean. You help yourself to water and other things, but they bring the food to you if you choose any table of your choice. It's not a big space, but there's plenty of seating. read more

KCM is a great addition to Grand Radpis offering fusion Japanese and Korean. I randomly found this restaurant from Google Search last year, and since then it's one my favorite place to visit. Their specialty is Katsu and it's rare to find this quality in this area. I've tried many similar restaurants in East side of Michigan where more diverse - Novi, Ann Arbor, Detroit, etc. By far KCM rocked the menu pretty well! Due to the COVID-19, I've ordered carryout but the food has been a great after 1.5 hour driving. Online ordering system is super convenient and the food always came right at the time. I've tried a quite a few items, and most of them were delicious. - Kimbap: try tuna & crab! It's the BEST! I was not a big fan of egg & bacon but good to try. - Sando: great portion and thickness of meat. - Katsu: Hire is super tender. Shoulder cut is my favorite with more texture. Try the one with curry if you like Japanese style curry. - Spicy kalbi taco: flour tortilla could be better than corn tortilla. Shell became too hard after driving too long. If you live nearby, I'm sure the quality of food is much better. For Kalbi meats, I think they use the same meat as spicy Butadon? - Butadon: not overly spicy or sweet. Portion seems a little smaller than Katsu menu, but good enough. Only compliant? Wish this place was closer to my house. For now, KCM became my treats for a monthly ordering from Kalamazoo (or more frequent as much as this winter weather allows). Many small restaurants are struggling with the pandemic, and I thought KCM was brave to open a new business during this unprecedented time. Truly wish the best and hope they can last long to feed more people with their delicious food! read more

Oh man. This place is only terrible because I'm within walking distance of it. We ordered to-go and got the spicy butadon, katsu curry, and smoked salmon kimbap. Our meals also came with 2 4oz cups of miso soup. I personally find that to be a great portion. Some places give you more, then you eat it out of guilt. Then you've got soup belly before the meal even starts. Anywho. I digress. The katsu curry was amazing. The katsu dipping sauce was spot on and the breading managed to stay crunchy all the way home. The BF said the kimbap was great, and it even held for lunch the next day with the help of a little Saran Wrap! But the star of the show was the butadon. Such a simple dish, but so good. Layers of flavor, but they didn't get muddy. Great spice level and perfect meat to rice ratios. I'll be back. A lot. read more
KCM is a great addition to the other restaurants on cherry! Adding an Asian twist to comfort food is always a win and KCM does not disappoint. I went for lunch with a colleague and the service was quick and the food delicious. I ordered the chicken Katsu curry plate which had perfectly cooked and lightly crisped chicken with a tasty but not overly spicy sauce. The rice was sticky and the vegetables had flavor as well. We look forward to coming back to try some of the sandwiches on the menu. read more
Can't get enough of this place. I swear the Hire Katsu is better every time I go. Every time I take a co-worker they have another devotee. The cabbage is sliced so thinly it makes me tired just thinking about it. I love that it is a small family run place as well. read more

4.5 Some high-quality chicken katsu right here! I get it with the spicy mustard and it's just perfect. The staff are so friendly and accommodating. Even though they're busy in the kitchen, they always come out to check on customers. The space is clean with lots of light (though it could use a paint color, a cushion or a plant or something), but I could literally eat here every day. The one drawback? Prices. $18 for katsu and $5 for a matcha soft serve (HIGHLY recommend) makes for one of the more pricey lunches in Grand Rapids. It's not financially accessible to everyone, which I wish it was. But I also love supporting local businesses, so I can't eat here every day - but will do so as often as I possibly can! read more

Pretty quaint space. A party over 8 would probably be too much. Enjoy!
