We auditioned these guys in our never ending search for the perfect Friday night curry delivery. (We sacked the last guys, Rajput in Goldhawk Road, after they delivered our order three hours late one too many times. Damn we miss their grub though).
So, a word of warning before we begin: when it comes to Indian food, we are super demanding. The Wife is Indian, and The Husband (having worked in India) has serious William Dalrymple pretensions.
Anyway, The Father in Law has taught us that the ultimate test of a good Indian restaurant is their vegetable samosas. This one definitely failed the test. The pastry was almost certainly Readyroll, the contents Birdseye, and the seasoning bland. 6/10, comparable to Waitrose samosas, but rather more expensive.
We then had two chicken curries, because this is another test - do they look alike, or do they look as if each one has been cooked separately, with distinct spices?
We went for the Himali Chicken and the Karahi Chicken. The coriander was very fresh and the meat looked and tasted like chicken (a change from most Indian restaurants), but the sauces and flavours were virtually identical in both taste and appearance, which is really not good. They were also very greasy, and neither flavoursome nor rich. There was no subtlety of flavour, and though we ordered medium hot curries, there was no 'kick' in either one. 5/10.
We had plain boiled rice - it was almost spot on, but not quite. It was not Basmati, despite the claim on the menu, but a generic version without the fluffiness or the famous aroma. 8/10.
The garlic naan was superb - very freshly baked and possibly the very best The Wife has ever had. The garlic was fresh and almost crunchy, the butter real, and the texture just right. 10/10
Service was seriously impressive. Admittedly, we only live five minutes down the road, but it was at our front door within 20 minutes and everything (as you'd hope) was hot. The chap who delivered gets an extra pat on the back for bringing it up to our flat, rather than making us make the long journey down a flight of stairs (it's Friday kids, we've had a long week).
So overall, curries are meh, rice and naan are great, and service is excellent. Sadly, the food is the most important element for us, and these guys just didn't make the grade. Next! read more
