This is a dive bar that just serves beer and soft drinks--no liquor. It is a cozy place with a no frills throwback ambiance. It was at about half capacity at 1:30 for lunch. Lots of locals and it's off the beaten path. Seating mostly hard surface booths with one round table with padded chairs that seats about 6-7. The bar has five fabulous padded swivel seats. Service was quick and friendly. Staff were always busy either serving or cleaning. Food was great--much better than I expected for a bar in Dodge City. When I arrived there were rustic looking customers with margaritas and bloody mary's in oversized glasses. During lunch the place is quiet and cool, but you can tell by the walls that they turn up at night. Service was immediate and earnest. My waitress didn't ask how I wanted my burger cooked, but it was tastily charbroiled. The chili was savory but not spicy in the least, so if you need heat ask for it. The Chicken sandwich with mushrooms was also good according to my dad. The prices are from 1995 so definitely stop by to save that budget! Cheers! read more

A little busy at lunch time,but waited on quickly. I ordered hamburger and fries,with coffee. He ordered chicken fried steak mashed potatoes and gravy with toast. Open faced burger,a bit dry ,no real taste an appeared undercooked. Fries looked good but were cold. Big CFS,gravy um ,not good watered down something or other. The locals really love this place, I stopped in with my husband and my Dad on a recommendation from my cousin. Both her and my Dad were locals at one time but my father had never eaten here. This place is very homey it has a tight seating area with booths only plus limited bar side seating. The staff super friendly and great table side conversation. I'm a Texas girl so the salsa was not up to my level of good. However my Dad and husband raved about the Catfish said it was perfect I kept stealing their fries because oh my goodness they were so good. I ordered a taco but could not eat the whole thing very good. However, this is not a place to take someone who needs wheelchair parking/handicap parking it was very difficult maneuvering my dads rolling walker in and out of the restaurant plus get him into our vehicle safely. read more

Oh my gosh what a disgusting place to eat. I was unimpressed with the interior which felt gross. The exterior is rough. And the food is worst of all. Genuinely disgusting. Have enjoyed stopping by Kate's for many years when visiting family in Dodge City. It's a burger/ beer dive. They are best known for burgers, fries, chicken fried steak and of course cold brews. Change it up and try their Mexican fare. I especially like their beef or chicken tostados. read more

First let me say I love "local", love "dives" and love home cooking....but mostly I love fresh food poked and served well. My visit here included none of the above. The other reviews exalted the burgers here, and traveling through Kansas, I had my hopes up for a stellar burger from prime local beef. I asked the waitress what most folks raved about, she said the cheeseburger, so I ordered a bacon Swiss burger. It came loaded with fries, that were clearly old from a warmer- soft and chewy. Two bites into the burger (on a stale bun), I felt something in my mouth that would not chew. What I pulled out was some kind of thin piece of elastic with a long black hair tangled around it - I nearly wretched on the spot. I called the waitress over, who was appropriately embarrassed when she saw it, and she went to get the woman owner/manager. When I showed her what was in the burger meat, her comment was "I'll tell our vendor - we get everything pre-processed and frozen from them" Her gesture was to say "I'm so sorry, I'll tell the cashier to only charge you half price"..... I literally could not open my mouth to protest for fear of losing what little was in my stomach. The second I made it to the parking lot, I lost it.... So I paid $4 for the privilege of throwing up in their parking lot. This visit may have made it tough for me to ever order another burger anywhere...at least for a while, and it has also made me VERY wary of Yelp reviews. read more

Traveling back east, we checked reviews and decided to try Kate's. It definitely passed the parking lot test. Upon entering, there was no sign to indicate whether to seat ourselves or wait, the un-even floor, the pool table in the middle of the room, the dingy and worn atmosphere should have been a clue as to what we were in for. We sat ourselves in a booth and waited, wondering if we had done the correct thing. Looking over the small, in size, stained, handwritten on, overloaded with items, paper menu, we waited. Our waitress soon appeared ready to take our entire order, drinks, apps, and main course. The beer, on tap, was great! Cold and with chilled mugs. The hand fried chips were crunchy but could have used a pinch of salt. Coming from the chile capital of the US of A, New Mexico, I Always try the salsa. While plentiful, the first taste was of onions. It was as thin and runny as water, with some small pieces of fresh jalapeno and, of course, onion. In much need of seasoning, I added salt, the only thing, besides pepper, that was available to us. My husband said it made it taste better, I barely agreed. The next app, the fried mushrooms, were served in a basket with a small side of ranch. No plate to put them on, no silverware to cut the hot, crunchy schrooms. They were on par with many other restaurants that we've tried them in, but nothing special. My Foot long coney dog came smothered in chile, cheese, and onions, which I love. I added mustard and dug in. What a disappointment! After searching for the hotdog, what I found, and tasted, after having to seriously put some muscle into using to 'steak' knife, was a hot dog the width of my pinkie. Not wanting to be unsure of my impression, I gave a bite to my husband, who normally has little criticism for most foods, HE liked the salsa and schrooms, he declared the hotdog Aweful! His Double meat chile Cheeseburger, which he did not have a choice as to how it was cooked, was smothered with chile and cheese also. But, it was overcooked and difficult to cut through. I'm not sure if the burger or mushrooms were fresh, I didnt ask. We would Not recommend this restaurant. And I wouldn't go back. read more

Kate's use to have some of the best Taco's in town, recently visited Dodge and stopped by the old haunts. Ordered the Taco and some salsa and chips (which use to be free with Taco), the salsa was some juice with onions and peppers little evidence of any tomato in it. The Taco was limp and no tomato there either. Cheese was hard to find, would recommend either of the Mexican food restaurants in town rather then this place. Quality has gone so far down hill it wasn't worth the money. 32 bucks for 2 taco's, 1 enchilada and some chips and crappy salsa. read more

Off the main street and away from all the over priced tourist attractions, is this little diner. The burgers are big and juicy. The price is reasonable (around $5). The fries are fresh and a little thick which makes them soft. My kids loved them but I thought they needed a little seasoning. The service staff is warm and friendly. It's a bar and Grill and looks like a dive on the outside, but inside it still looks like a dive. My chili burger was just fine. For those of you who care, the chili did have beans in it. This is a great local stop in Dodge City, Ks. It's worth wandering off the main strip to find this nice little spot. They have fantastic tacos and burgers. They are also a great stop for your fellow beer drinker or pool player. They have a bar with stools, so patrons can gather either there or at any of the numerous tables around. All I had to do was walk right in and find a seat and my waitress took my order. This has to be one of the best little hidden gems in the country. The people are so friendly and the food is fabulous. My wife had the deluxe cheesvurger and fried and I had the catfish. Thisbisbthe best fish dinner I've ever had. Fresh and flavorful as I've ever had and I'm including fish frys we've had at home. I can't recommend this placce enough.
