Karen McNeil has been my dentist for close to 10 years. I went to her when I was having a problem with my teeth and several dentists before her couldn't or wouldn't fix it. They thought it was more profitable to keep putting new caps on and charging me thousands of dollars. Karen did research, x-rays, and measurements and resolved the problem. She's very pro-active and I like that about her. Every time I enter that office everyone goes out of their way to make me feel comfortable and relaxed. They feel like family to me. I had a really bad experience with this dentist and I urge you to steer clear. Believing the advertisements, I came in with the hopes of getting prettier teeth starting with my regular 6mo cleaning. I admit, I was cheating on my normal dentist I'd had for years due to some special offers they had so it's not like I wasn't 'in the know' about the condition of my teeth. But, according to them, I was in danger of losing many of them and needed thousands of dollars of work done ASAP. Their style is more like a used car sales office, you go into a 'consultation room' before and after your appointment and there are some high pressure sales techniques being used to get you to agree to schedule appointments for massive amounts of work on your teeth as well as return for a 'deep cleaning' as their normal cleaning really isn't much of one as other reviewers have stated. In the end, I didn't succumb to the pressure and crawled back to my original dentist, apologizing for the brief affair- he offered to give me a similar deal as they offered and didn't even reprimand me for cheating. He confirmed, none of the work was needed they had said were emergencies, and when I called back to let them know that, they said they always recommended an aggressive stance on dental work as they aren't set up to deal with emergencies. Uh, that's just wrong on both fronts, why would I want a dentist who would refuse me in an emergency and who basically does all the work that MIGHT need to be done and have me pay out of pocket instead of spread it over years of insurance coverage? read more

Dr. McNeil is great and has a wonderful practice. My old dentist i felt just poked and scrapped my teeth every 6 months and that was it. I wanted a dentist who was more proactive at seeing problems and identifying them before they get into an emergency situation and then it would really cost a lot of money! Unlike my old dentist, she uses WAY better technology and equipment that is actually made in the past decade! She is great at identifying potential issues, like cavities, and take preventive actions and offers honest opinions. The staff is friendly and makes conversation with you - even with your mouth hangin' wide open. I think the most important thing is finding a dentist that not only you trust, but is looking out for the care and long term healthy of your teeth. I know health care can be expensive but that is why its important to make sure you know your plan and coverage so there are no surprise bills and going in network. Unlike some of the other reviews, I've never felt pressured into doing dental work. I have been seeing Karen at Smile Artistry dentistry for over a decade. For those who demand excellence, Karen is amazing. Every time I come into the office, I get all my concerns addressed and receive all the information I need to keep up my home-care routine. Karen has a beautiful office in Redmond that makes me feel very comfortable . You could almost take a nap during your cleaning. My smile was not great, to say the leastL I found myself quite embarrassed to smile at times. I needed a lot of dentistry! I researched several cosmetic dentists in the Seattle area and narrowed it down to 3 dentists. I had a consultation with each. I finally went with Dr Karen McNeill based on her vast experience, knowledge and expertise in advanced cosmetic dentistry. She routinely does full mouth makeovers and has done so for 25 years plus, so that alone boosted my confidence in her. I had several veneers, implants and some other work minor done. I opted to have everything done that they suggested which all made a lot of sense to me when we got going. I wanted things done right. Everything was based not just on appearance but most importantly long-term oral health. However, there was no pressure to commit to anything. In comparison, I found the costs/pricing to be very reasonable. They are not the cheapest either, but they did point out the vast difference in dental materials particularly when we discussed veneers and ceramics. My conclusion, you pay for what you get. Lastly, I thought the staff was very professional and friendly. They made me feel comfortable at all times. Oh, and yes, I love my smile! They do amazing work! Highly recommend them. read more

Dr. McNeill sees you as a way to make money and nothing more. I was her patient for a couple years. She convinced me to come in quarterly for "deep" cleanings. My new dentist and hygienist told me after that it was standard procedure there to tell patients this. At least one hygienist was let go for NOT insisting that a patient needed extra cleanings. Once she had convinced me that I needed fillings replaced and crowns redone (which led to a failed root canal and infection over a long holiday weekend and two rounds of antibiotics), I left her. By then, she handed me off to her dental partner. Apparently, when she couldn't convince me to get braces at 47, or veneers, I wasn't worth her time. So she passed me off to the regular dentist. I'd never met her, but she said, "how nice to see you again!" Totally bogus and false. On the plus side, they have free bottles of water and really nice bathrooms. And you can watch movies through video goggles while they do unnecessary things to your teeth because you have insurance and there's no one there to tell them no. Stay away. I know two dentists and multiple hygienists whose eyes bulged when I told them who I used to see. read more

I initially went to see Dr. McNeill based on two criteria, 1. My previous dentist saying I needed a crown. 2. To take full advantage of my dental insurance as I was always paying at least $100.00 out of pocket at the previous dentist. I was impressed with Dr. McNeill, the staff, and the office -- all very professional. After my consult, it was determined I did need a crown and to avoid the potential of another crown within a year Dr. McNeill suggested the tooth next to it also receive a crown. Both of these teeth had porcelain fillings that were about 15 years old. Dr. McNeill's opinion was there was not enough tooth structure to put another filling in if something should happen. This was entirely my call, she being the expert, and respecting her opinion decided to have both teeth crowned. The consult and oral surgery occurred in February/March 2014. The costs of the 2 crowns was somewhere around $2400.00. Although, having fillings (none in the past 10 years) my dentists have said the overall condition of my dental health has been very good to excellent. In March/April 2015 I went in for my first exam of the year. After the exam I was informed I needed two more crowns on the other side of the mouth from 2014 (very convenient) and two other fillings replaced. The bill for all of this work was in the $4000.00 range. After getting over the shock of this news, the red lights and sirens went off. Subsequently, I went to two other dentists for their opinion and they were the opposite of Dr. McNeill. Both dentists informed me there I had plenty of natural tooth structure left to accommodate replacement fillings if needed and overall my dental condition was excellent. They both said the two crowns recommended by Dr. McNeill were unnecessary (I had the latest films from my exam with Dr. McNeill sent to them) and although they had not seen the films, the crowns from 2014 may have been unnecessary also. Dr. McNeill is no longer my dentist, I have elected to be a patient of one of the dentists I consulted with. Dr. McNeill is very proactive and aggressive when it comes to dental care, which is all well and good, and she is entitled to her opinion and approach to treatment. I just find this is not the right fit for me knowing my dental history and the "results" of the 2015 exam. I have to agree with some of the other reviews of the practice regarding the 'hard sell" of treatments you absolutely need to maintain good dental health. The "hard sell" was given to me on both visits to the office, you just have to stand your ground and say No thank you. I gave this 3 stars as I mentioned in the beginning I found the practice to be very professional and not to push additional services when I told them I was not interested. Unfortunately, I've had similar experiences. But I made the mistake of spending thousands of dollars on dental work by Dr. Karen Mcneill and her office. Later I did save myself from getting scammed any further by getting a second opinion. Below are a few things that happend: - The office claimed that I had cavities that did NOT exist. - The Dr. Mcneill put porcelain crowns onto my molars located in the back of my mouth. They kept breaking so then she tried to charge me "half the cost" to replace them. A whopping $4,500.00 -- but the office guarantees their work for 10 years. I went to two other dentists that both agreed separately that porcelain does not hold well in the molars. It's unfortunate this dental office was featured in the news years ago leading people to their office. This office uses pressure and urgency tactics. read more

I really wish I had read the reviews before going here. I got a coupon in the mail for a free whitening appointment, and liked that so I just started using them as my and my husband's dentist. I hadn't had a dentist appointment for awhile, but I had always had very healthy teeth so I was surprised to find that almost every of my molars needed work. I got quite a few fillings on their recommendation, but am now wondering if I needed them at all. My husband had a similar experience. I always thought it was odd that they wanted to be paid before doing the work, but just accepted it as different practices. It's a bit of a pain if you end up not wanting to have the work done, though to their credit they have been very open about refunding for work that has not been completed. This post used to detail a specific incident of care regarding my husband's treatment that I feel could have been handled better by Smile Artistry. Some points have been debated by the practice, and I decided to remove the details since they obscure the issue. It boils down to the fact that we were not happy with his care, so we will not be returning. My big regret is that I kept coming here as long as I did, even after my first minor misgivings. I was referred to Dr. McNeill from a friend and have been a patient at Smile Artistry for over five years. First, the overall quality of dentistry I receive is outstanding; the staff is very caring, genuine and I feel very comfortable at the office. Recently, I had several dental crowns due to my bite that was causing fractures to my teeth. One particular crown had always been an eye-sore from my previous dentist. It never looked right and considering my smile is one of my most important assets, I was happy to have that replaced. In addition, there was another tooth with tiny cracks, and a third tooth could use a filling as an interim to a crown. After the initial crowns were seated, each on the opposite side of the filling, I saw the quality outcome of Dr. McNeill's dentistry. The two crowns were so beautiful it became apparent that the filled tooth needed a crown now in order to match the new teeth especially since I was in the middle of my Invisalign treatment. Dr. McNeill offered the pros and cons to replacing it with a crown and explained that she was trying to save me money with the filling. After all things considered, I made the decision to "just do it". The overall outcome was exactly what I wanted and the way Dr. McNeill designed my teeth (crowns) is true artistry in itself. My teeth are stronger, look fantastic, and I am very happy with the results. I highly recommend Dr. McNeill and the Smile Artistry team for the most comprehensive dental care available. read more

Dr. McNeill replaced 2 veneers that I had done at a different office years ago. The lab they used didn't match color perfectly. Instead of accepting anything less than perfect, Smile Artistry made sure a better match was sent right away. I am very happy with the results. If there were any way that I could put this woman out of business, I would. This is the best that I can hope for. I suppose Dr. McNeill-O'Conner is ok if you are one of those people just looking to have whiter teeth. I had two crowns put in by her and within two weeks, one of them had chipped. I just had the other one chip. They are at the point where I think I need to have them replaced. My wife went in to have a crown put in, which ended up being a two hour affair during which they had her mouth cracked wide open. This resulted in her developing serious TMD problems for which we are now paying an orthodonist significant money to try to fix. When Dr. M-O learned of her problems, her reply was 'Well, I told you this might happen' (this doesn't reflect well on her skills if she knew something might happen and she exacerbated it ). Her solution, of course, was to say that she needed, first, a $5000 dental appliance followed up by $50000 worth of corrective dental work. Fortunately, we got a second opinion he gave us a referral to an excellent orthodontist who deals with TMD patients almost exclusively and who was aghast at what Dr. McNeill-O'Connor had suggested. Far from being a permanent solution that she claimed, Dr. McNeill-O'Connor's 'solution' would likley only last 10 years, after which time the all of that work would have to be replaced. On a final note, I find two aspects of her office procedures to be disturbing. First, and foremost, is her practice of billing patients BEFORE any actual work is performed. I've never in my life had a dentist do this. Would you pay your contractor before your house was finished? They get very pissy if you suggest you'll pay them when they finish the job, but not before. Second, there is a very high turnover rate in their office staff and hygenists. I can only imagine wha tthis is indicative of but it makes it difficult to talk to someone there who knows anything, can answer your questions, and is competent. read more
