Turns out they don't let just about anybody off the street do it, the students are all well practised and some just at the turning point where the cut would of cost you £50. As someone who's experimented with my own for years, bleaching it to within an inch of its life, cropping it pixie short, colouring it blue, playing around with a fauxhawk and trying out every home hair colour under the sun, I'm the kind of girl who walks into a hairdresser and says to the stylist, 'What do you want to do with it?' Thus I am the perfect meat for these trainees. Forsaking my beloved Alex for the purposes of Yelp, I decided that if I was having something simple done like going a few inches shorter but keeping my regular style, I might as well get it done here. Now, I've heard plenty of horror stories about hair colouring, so only take my word for the whole cut process. I myself am only using semi permanents until I go grey, and that hopefully won't be for a lo-ho-hoooong time. Like a tattoo salon, this place makes you sign a waiver so you can't really whinge if it all goes doolally. After all, these are trainees but they're under the supervision of a manager. You're not used as a test subject, don't worry. In fact the teachers make a point of telling the students not to veer too far away from the style the customer already has. You'll be asked what you want and the teacher will talk the junior through which styles suit which face shapes and what not. You're unlikely to get something alien and artsy, in fact it'll probably be a very classic cut. Your hair will be washed with their own brand shampoos and conditioners which smell and feel amazing, and then the assigned student will cut your hair in stages which takes a good while longer than regular hairdressers as the supervisors have to check what's been done and offer improvements. If you can, pick up a flyer or magazine advert that says Toni and Guy require hair models because that means you'll get a free cut. If not it can be anything from a fiver to £15 if you're going more extravagant with colour and perhaps a perm, but it's way cheaper than most salons. If money's short and I'm not feeling too in love with my hair, I'm happy to take the risk and come here.

This little piggy didn't go blonde, but she did go a helllllllluva lot darker, at the capable hands of Adam. From the moment I stepped foot back into FB, I was even more well-taken-care-of than the first time. While I waited for Adam to finish up someone else, I read an actual current copy of Glamour, and was given a free fringe trim and tidy-up. And then Adam did my hair. Adam is one of the most fun hairdressers I have ever encountered. Funny, sharp and with a definite wild streak. He tried to get me to go for some kind of crazy colour flash, but finally acccepted that I wanted to go for the deepest dark brown instead. He helped me choose the best possible shade, taking into account my skin and eye colours (as usual) and also my natural *lip* colour! That's some colour consultation, non? The resultant colour is possibly the best I have ever had, and certainly buries dead my relationship with Razors Edge. Though it's just one colour with no extra tones put in, Adam worked the colour and application to accentuate the natural tones in my hair, and it's a flawless job. A full head tint costs £42 with Adam, and it'll be the best £42 your hair has ever had spent on it.

I came in for all over color and highlight (requiring bleach). Midway through, my colorist had another appointment so I got an intern. She finished my hair and all seemed okay. However, when I went home (I have dark hair) I noticed a huge patch of yellow/blonde in my black hair that they didn't cover up. Also, as my boyfriend nicely pointed out, they color my sideburns a little too much and now part of my cheek peach fuzz is black. I went in to have the bleached corrected and the colorist corrected it no problem. My second time I just did an all over color and it was a fine experience! Nothing bad this time! One thing I miss about Aveda back home is there Aveda tea and they give you a free hand massage while your hair is getting dyed. They say they give free hang massages online but I've never been offered one. I'll continue to go cause its close and the girl who does my hair is pleasant.

And as you may be aware from my former Mufti review, I badgered a friend of mine into visiting them. I booked myself an appointment for Saturday with very high expectations, and they were met gallantly. Mufti is cool, there's no denying it. It's in the Northern Quarter for starters, it's run by guys, the music is unbelievably mellow and lovely and it's simple, clean and relaxing. They had me at the film magazines by the sofa. You might not be able to pick a hairdo from them but you can read through which films should have been TV shows. Agreed, journalists! Empire Records should SO have been a series, as should Watchmen. Ahem, where was I. Not that I'm leaving Salvation (http://www.yelp.co.uk/biz/salvation-hair-ltd-salford#hrid:iRY12h4CSS4gugZ1e-S2Pg), it just feels a little weird to walk in there without Alex, but I was more than intrigued to see what Mufti could do with my stupid hair type. Over the years I've tried and failed to make it more manageable, the only thing that really worked for me was a pixie cut. Now I've ill-advisedly grown it long again and its natural wave and supposed 'thinness but lots of it' have got the better of me. Hair, meet Karl, a genius, a lovely guy who washed my hair himself without getting some floor sweeper to do it and asked me questions about my hair routine throughout. I think he could tell from the clobber that I'm something of a vintage junkie, and my resulting style reflected that. A snip, a tweak, some conversations about Alex (he knew him very vaguely), advice on hair products and a confirmation that my hair is indeed thick (take THAT, Headmasters) and that short layers are fooling me into thinking my hair's manageable later, I looked in the mirror and was greeted with a silky head of waves worthy of a 40s movie star. I'm a convert.

I was originally looking for another barbers, before leaving there for here with it being too busy (Decent Cut and Supercuts), so my third choice, or Richard Wright of salon's was here, and it wasn't a bad choice either. They was a short wait, with the stylists finishing off someone elses hair, but it wasn't too long, once she had quickly swept up and the other one had put something into her book, it was ready for me to take the hotseat. I am very head sensitive, as regular readers of my reviews will know and have long struggled to find a decent barbers throughout Manchester, Oldham, Middleton and Rochdale, and everywhere in between, but they seemed to do a good job here. My barber was very careful, and even used a lighter grip and razer to cut my hair, which I found to be good. She was also quite nice, and tried to do the haircut as quickly as possible, as I asked and even shared a laugh about how long my hair was, and I'm surprised she even managed to cut it without a lawnmower. She didn't seem to catch me with the razor much, as most barbers seem to do, like an aggressive toddler, quickly rushing to get their own way - it wasn't like that. The haircut wasn't bad either, but still it was quite pricey at £15, and I later found out this price was for a "Shampoo and Style" with a "Creative Stylist", I find it confusing they have 3 different prices for 3 different stylists, they don't advertise this and you never know who you are getting until the end of the day, when you pay, which could vary between £4 on a "Shampoo and Style", they didn't have a dry cut on their website but with the price I paid, I presume this is what they charged for as it was the only £15 treatment The salon its-self is okay, it is a little small but still big enough to fit a small desk in and a small sofa for waiting, and a few magazines, which I had no interest in, some broadsheet newspapers would be more my cup of tea. Overall, this is quite a nice salon, although it has it's flaws, as any place done, the lady who cut my hair was very nice, and done a good, quick job so I feel Kim-Creative deserve a solid 3 stars, and I hope this continues due to a "Second-Haircut saloon" I often get at places, which turns a good experience to something more negative. UPDATE: After multiple visits here where I have received treatment from different members of the salon, where they have caught me with the razors a few times, and raised the price from a level which was pricey as it is makes me feel they are trying to stop people coming, like me, who want dry cuts in order for more expensive treatments, they seem to be treating me not as a customer but as a second priority and someone they don't care about which is a real shame and sadly it is the reason why I have to demote KimCreative down to a single one star from three due to ongoing events which have gone on for a few months now, where I have changed my regular barbers elsewhere in Manchester city centre because of this, I'm sorry to report.

Although I enjoyed the time to wander around town, I was there for my hair! The overall experience was much the same as last time. Lots of chatting between stylists, plenty of regulars, and then those of us who are between exploring new places and actually just mourning the loss of our last favourite. I was happy with the overall cut, though I did have to trim a certain section myself - not easy- due to the difference in the way I style my hair and the way she parted it on the day.
