I've been eating at Kappy's off and on for over 46 years when we first moved to Orlando in 1971. I'm not a regular customer because I usually am on the road and I don't live in this area anymore, however if I happen to be nearby I will go in to get a cheese steak and a shake for lunch. Be honest with yourself. Don't go here to lose weight. They do have some meals which you could consider a little more healthier, but this is still a great place to eat. I prefer the cheese steak over everything else but they do make a great burger and they also make great dogs. I go here a bit less than I did twenty years ago. I eat healthier and I usually pack my own lunches for that reason and to save some bucks. However if I know I'm going to be nearby I will try to arrange to visit to pick up a cheese steak. The seasoning makes the cheese steak special. I don't recall the waffle fries when I first ate there but I guess they changed things from long ago. I prefer shoe string fries over the waffle fries which remind me of ChickFilA, which I also try to avoid. I think the shoe string fries are just better with a cheese steak. I think the service is awesome and the price is fair. Sure you could go to McD's and get a meal for less but why would you? Their food sucks. Their burgers are pre-packaged by a machine and then frozen. Their eggs aren't even real eggs. Their fries taste like cardboard. Yuk. I haven't eaten at McDs in over thirty years and don't plan to ever eat at one for the rest of my life. The building is original and is still in good shape. It has undergone some renovations and it has seen good and bad days. I like that they haven't caved in and gone the path of modernization. I like the old 50's feel of it being a diner and a drive up/park and eat joint. Kappy's in Maitland is more than just a historical place to eat. It's a place where you get a tasty meal for roughly $11.00 and support the small guys. Are they perfect? No. They make mistakes because they are human. However they aim to please and if you have any problems they will try to help you. Just ask if you have any questions about the menu. Myself as a New Yorker and avid traveler to Gino's and Pat's in Philadelphia the sandwiches were not up to par at all. This hidden gem is worth visiting. We saw this on the way to go to some breweries. We noticed it has been around for 30 years and decided to pay a first time visit. As a huge fan of Diners, Drive ins and Dives, I am always on the outlook for that kitchy, throw-back dive with blow your mind food. Being a native Orlandoan - I've heard about Kappy's for a long time and have been meaning to try it. Finally found myself in the area and starving on Sunday so we decided to stop and give it a shot. It's pretty much exactly what you expect, sort of an old-school diner-esque joint with some covered picnic tables outside and 8-10 stubby barstools inside. It's definitely got the character of a place that's a local favorite, but the food isn't anything outrageous. Perhaps my expectations were a little too high, maybe if I had indulged with milkshake we could be talking 3.5 to 4 stars, but I had already settled into a food coma before leaving. We (better half and I ) Haven't been in by in a couple months, and the food today was not the usual, awesome, out of this world cheese steak that we have gotten for years!!! First time visiting: Heard this place has been around for 51 years and the last 38 years have been in Maitland. The outside is dated, but in a cool old school way. Plenty of outdoor seating and about 10 seats inside at the bar. I went to the take out window and told them I had never visited and what did they recommend. They are known for their Philly Cheesesteaks. I ordered it with the waffle fries and unsweetened Tea. The thing I really enjoyed is that all the sandwiches are one size about 8inches (I didn't measure). I waited a normal amount of time for a 2pm lunch stop, I had about 4 people in front of me. When my meal was served the cheesesteak was a little greasier than I would have liked, however it was awesome. The flavor was really good and I really enjoyed it. The waffle fries were ok, I should have added some salt, however they weren't bad. The unsweetened tea was really good. Most places have bad Tea, but it was really good. Seriously addictive. The place is a drive up dive for sure.....a dive that oozes character....the location and the staff.......there is a tiny inside bar area and a walk up window. The subs here are not gourmet by any stretch of the imagination, but what they are is extremely tasty. This place manages to cram some really great taste into a fairly plain looking sandwiches. Over the past week I've been here 2x. The first time for a chicken philly and the second line for something called the Kappy Kuban (Ham/Pork/Swiss). Both were great! I also nabbed a bite of my wife's regular philly which had a pretty amazing taste. The bread that these sandwiches are made in are pretty unassuming, but it works extremely well with the sandwiches. I so wanted to love it. I did not. With so much franchised and corporate food in the world (especially Orlando which is such a new town) it feels good to support the one offs and Mom and Pops. Kappy's looks great- like a 50s throwback malt shop - a little weather beaten and more authentic than a Johnny Rockets. But the joy ends there. The staff was surly. The order took forever (and then they shorted us one order of fries, so we had to go back). And their Cheesesteaks (their signature menu item btw) was way to salty...to the point of unenjoyable. The subs will require further investigation; today I went for a cheeseburger, waffle fries and a vanilla shake. Indoor or outdoor seating is available. On a hot day, I chose to sit indoors and brave the air-conditioner on blast. The service was quick and the space was clean. The burger was good, nothing fancy. Shredded lettuce, tomato, and onion. Cut in half and served hot. The burger wasn't salty at all and did not taste as if it had been frozen. The fries were perfect and the shake...oh baby, so good. Not too sweet - thank goodness. I'll go back to try either the breakfast sandwich on a croissant or maybe a hot dog basket. Hmmm, "Padre's Creation" sounds very interesting. Kappy's still has game.
