People getting fatter at the KS State Fair
    Sarah B.

Hmmm, how to describe the Kansas State Fair? Here are a few words that come to mind: Greasy. Filthy. Noisy. Poo-scented. LOVE!!!!!1!!! The Fair comes to Hutchinson every September and brings with it rowdy cowboys, horrendous traffic, RV's by the hundreds and hillbillies from all over the state. It's loud and obnoxious and absolutely wonderfull! NOTHING happens in Hutchinson, so the Fair is a big deal--I know my junior high and early high school years centered around the fair and who I was going to make out with on the ferris wheel. Anyway, as with any state fair, the KS State Fair celebrates the best of Kansas. People from all over Kansas bring in their giant vegetables, biggest animals, and their gawdy artwork to be voted on for prizes. There are rides, games, concerts, rodeos, vendor buildings, art shows, petting zoos, and oh, the food!! Bring your entire family or just a date--there's something for everyone. Stop by after nine and get free admission. Here are the top 10 things you MUST do if you ever make it to the Kansas State Fair: 1. Eat a Pronto Pup. 2. Take a ride on Ye Olde Mill. 3. See Styx in concert (I swear, they show up every year). 4. See the sculpture made entirely of butter. 5. Ride a rickety ride or two and pray that it doesn't fall apart while you're on it. 6. Hold a newborn piglet in the petting zoo. 7. Get drunk in one of the beer gardens. 8. Check out the craft buildings and laugh at the Macaroni Jesus. 9. Drink THE BEST root beer you will ever have in your life. 10. Eat another Pronto Pup. And then a Monkey Tail.

As a 4-H alumni, I've been coming to the state fair for many years and it is always something I've looked forward too, even now that I just come as visitor instead of a participant. Livestock shows are the first weekend, with showmanship kicking things off on Friday. In a nutshell, this is where kids are judged on how well they present and handle the animal. The kids work really hard all year to show on the "green shavings", so make sure you stop by and watch for a bit. Saturday they have the market animal shows, which is basically where they are judged on how good they would be for butchering. On Sunday they have the breeding animal shows, so they are judged on how good they would be for reproducing. If animals are really your thing, I suggest checking out the livestock birthing center. Usually they have a sow or two ready to give birth to piglets at any time, and they usually have 2-3 cows that are ready to give birth as well. If you get the chance to see one of those give birth, I suggest it. It is so so neat. They also have ducklings, goats, and lambs there. In addition, there are tons of other project exhibits to see - chickens, rabbits, arts & crafts, sewing, photography, cooking, etc.. There are also lots of exhibitors to stop by and shop at - handbags, snacks, cookware, clothing, etc. There are rides you can go on like the sky lift and the train. There are bounce houses too. Also, every weekend night they have a concert - this year Jake Owen will be playing the second weekend, I think he is the big one to perform this year. Obviously everyone's favorite part though is the food. You will gain 15 pounds on your trip here, weather it's in root beer, nachos, cheese curds, funnel cakes, or just fried food in general.

Old Dominion! Best show of the whole Fair!

I have been to fairs/festivals/fests in a few states and as many countries. KSF is the best. Perhaps it is because it is everything that is America that makes it so amazing. KSF is a glimpse into the daily lives of people in America who work. Who create. Who give. Who care and most importantly, what makes America great. If you find you young child wanting to wear skinny jeans, play video games all day or generally suffering from the debilitating de-masculinization of America that is spreading, bring them here to learn about what makes a true American. If look in the mirror one day and realize that you are a taker, live off of the government without making an attempt to better your situation, come to the KSF. From the fried Twinkie's to the Bbq, to the local corn on the cob to the amazing fried corn-dog things this place has it all. Let's not forget about the concerts. Each year the KSF Board does an amazing job of finding up and coming talent and presenting them to the great state of Kansas at prices a 1/4 of what you would pay anywhere else. People are polite. The atmosphere is relaxed and it is just a great experience for all ages.

This place has terrible sight lines. The seats are on large, flat terraces. Unless you get seats in…read morethe first row of the terrace you won't see anything but the backs of heads. The seating is armless banquet chairs packed as tight as possible. It's like being trapped in the center section of a 747. I'd have given one star but there are three rows with decent views. And bring earplugs. Even comedy shows are too loud.

To celebrate our 29th wedding anniversary tonight we went to the Crown Uptown…read more"Dinner"Theater...well the theater, the performances, the performers were amazing and fantastic, but the dinner...nope! As for what to say about the dinner, (I use that term loosely) my mother told me if I didn't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all! Well...I don't listen to my mother. First, the buffet was served to you only after standing in a line that wrapped around the theater like you were standing in line in a prison or a sad cafeteria, except the food and service at the Crown was worse. The "meal" started with some over cooked mystery meat and a dried up piece of chicken meat (not sure what part of the chicken it was) some mushy vegetables that had the piss cooked out of them, some mashed potatoes that tasted like paste, a cold roll w/cold butter and a salad, no wait...it was just lettuce. To top it all off...it was served on a paper plate. And not one of the the "good" paper plates, one of the plates that can't hold much food without collapsing. But that's ok, because the serving was minimal at best. We only were able to eat part of the "food" and ended up throwing it out in the convenient trash cans spread out around the theater. The show was fantastic and we really enjoyed the performances. The talent of the singing and dancing was very impressive. While we sat in the front row, there didn't appear to be a bad seat in the house. Well, except for the seats on the far left side of the theater, where everyone stands in line to get the incredibly bad meal. If you have seat in this section you will have people standing all around you before the show starts. The bar was quick and attentive with the ability to order from your seat before the show starts and at intermission. They should have more of the food listed on the menu available, but then people would forgo the "dinner". Believe me a frozen pizza, a pretzel or some popcorn from the bar would have been better. My advice to Max Wilson and the other leadership of the theater, you have a GREAT group of performers, shows, venue and volunteers, but you MUST find a better caterer! If you need to, charge a little more and improve the dinning experience that's ok. It would be worth it to complete the experience. That all said, we will be back to see a show, maybe even Elvis in January, but it won't be for dinner. 5 stars for the performances and performers, but 0 stars for the food!
