They also have a really cool exhibit of collections belonging to residents of Reno County. The children's play area is a blast! There is a boat, a grocery store, a house, a dress-up area, and more. It's very imaginative. Admission to the play area is only $1.00 and it's a very affordable and fun way to spend an afternoon. There is a nice research library available to the public that has a large amount of information about Reno County and people who have lived in there. You could spend days in the research library reading. This small county Museum has a lot offer it's community and it's visitors.

05/2026 While driving through Hutchinson, Kansas, my wife…read moreand I stopped at Troy's BBQ for lunch. During our meal, the owner came by to check on us and asked what brought us to the area. We told him we were just passing through on our way home and asked if there was anything worth seeing nearby. He recommended the local space museum and Strataca, the underground salt mine. After finishing lunch, we decided to check out the salt mine since it was only a short drive away. When we arrived, the building looked more like a regular business office than a tourist attraction. Inside, there's a ticket counter where you purchase your tour tickets, along with displays and information about the mine. As luck would have it, we were the last two people admitted for the day's tours. After receiving our hard hats and a brief orientation, we headed to the elevator. It felt a little strange seeing an elevator in the middle of the building that takes visitors 650 feet underground. The ride down takes about a minute and a half in near darkness, adding to the anticipation. When the elevator doors opened, it felt like stepping into another world. Despite being hundreds of feet underground, it looked like a massive building with no windows. The size of the chambers carved entirely out of salt is incredible. The first part of the tour is self-guided and explains how the salt is mined, the machinery involved, and how dynamite is used to break apart the salt deposits for harvesting. After that, board a train that travels through parts of the mine, showing where mining operations began and explaining what life was like for the miners, including break and lunch area. Learn about the equipment used and more. Dark Ride tour, where a guide drives you through additional sections of the mine on a golf cart while sharing stories and information about its history and operation. The tunnels stretch for miles, and since mining still takes place today, it's fascinating to see how much of the mine remains active. They even host special events, dinner theaters, and private functions underground. This was one of the most unique attractions we've visited and far exceeded our expectations. An excellent tour from start to finish, and we would absolutely do it again.

This place is great. So much to do and see, it's an awesome destination for couples, families or…read moregroups to go and spend a few hours embracing the autumnal season. There are plenty of activities to entertain anyone, and rustic charm abounds. There are several areas staged for excellent photo opportunities, activities everywhere to help kids burn off some energy, concessions for the mid-day munchies or more (kettle corn, turkey legs, donuts, coffee, apple cider ((in slushy, shake, or hot)) bottled drinks). Most everything is easily accessible. The patch to the north is a bit far to walk, but there is a tractor ride that will take you there. The covered wagon has bench seating all the way around the inside, and there is a trailer behind the wagon to carry your selection of pumpkins and gourds back from the patch, with dividers to keep your goods organized and easy to grab when you get back. There is a large parking area with people directing traffic to keep it organized, which is great because this place has become quite popular. Admission price is reasonable, especially considering that most of the activities are included (barring the pumpkin shooters - $1 per shot or 6 for $5 - and the rock mining sluice, which has different priced bags available). Pumpkin prices are reasonable as well, especially with the selection available and the experience of finding that perfect one. Campfire sites are available to rent for group or family functions as well, pricing and availability for those can be found on the website.

They're on the side of the road and growing wild in fields. Kansas Maze is a great place to be surrounded by sunflowers because they have a lot growing in a huge field. FYI: Probably the best time to visit is late summer, because that's when you'll find the sunflowers at their peak glory. There's a small window for sunflowers (or any flowers, really), so when they're poppin', you gotta go visit. If you visit in the summer, though, be sure to bring a hat or an umbrella, because there is zero shade in the field. Kansas Maze offers a sunflower maze, and also lots of places to take selfies.
