They were plentiful and it came with the lunch combo, so I was happy for it. Spicy Chicken: They gave you a huge amount of food for what you pay for. The chicken I can tell is the same you would use in teriyaki chicken. It was a bit tough to eat and a bit dry, despite being drenched in sauce. We have been going here regularly and it seems management might have changed hands? Having said that, there was nothing to complain about before and in fact there is a good new development! I had the mixed tempura and the volcano roll. Both were bad for the same reason. The tempura batter was raw and soft. There was also too much of it. Posting a pic of the volcano roll that shows a less than one inch piece of spicy tuna wrapped in seaweed surrounded with massive amount of flavorless, doughy and raw tempura batter. Kanpai Sushi is a nice Japanese eatery that has been in Brentwood since 2005. The ambiance is modern with bits of Asian decor after being renovated. There were 3 animated maneki-neko (beckoning cat) overlooking the indoor seating area. These cats are a common Japanese figurine which is often believed to bring good luck to the owner. The service was prompt and our server was very nice and helpful. She accommodated our special request by asking the sushi chef if certain things can be done. We ordered: Appetizer Calamari - 3/5 The calamari was deep fried and the batter was relatively pretty thick, but tasty. The calamari itself was not not tender as I wished. It was more rubbery. Overall, the calamari wasn't bad, but I had better. Maui Roll - 4/5 This was a special sushi. There was a lot of tobico the topped the Maui roll. The cucumber gave the spicy hamachi and rice a nice crunch. The mango sauce with unagi sauce did not agree with my taste buds. I would prefer drizzling all mango sauce or all unagi sauce over the Maui roll instead of mixing the two sauces together. This is a personal preference. Others may like the two sauces drizzled over the Maui roll. That being said, the Maui roll was very good. Bento Combo (sesame chicken and california roll) - 5/5 With the Bento dinner combo, you get to select two items. One from the entree list and one from the "side" list. I selected sesame chicken and California roll. You also get miso soup and salad. The sesame chicken cubes was breaded and fried, then tossed in teriyaki sesame sauce. Very tasty. The california roll was very good. The avocado was buttery, not overripe. The portions were very generous. I would order this combination again in the future. I cannot speak for the less positive reviews that I've read on yelp. If I believed the negative reviews, I would not have tried Kanpai Sushi. We're happy that we did try Kanpai sushi. The service was good, the staff friendly and accommodating. The food we ordered was very good. I would recommend giving Kanpai Sushi a try. This was our first time coming to Kanpai Sushi but it was a bit disappointing. We ordered three different sushi rolls and they were all underwhelming in their own way. On all of the rolls, the sushi rice was not sticky like you'd typically expect, so all of the rolls crumbled as you tried to eat them. The wasabi was very sweet like it had sugar in it. The soy sauce was so salty it was unbearable and needed to be thrown out. In terms of specific rolls, the 007 was incredibly sweet tasting and warm because they packaged this cold roll with hot items. There were a lot of different sauces all melted together. Both fried rolls (Deep Fried California and Deep Fried Philadelphia) were very greasy and the oil had permeated all the way through to the center of the roll. The fried Philly had a distinctly fishy taste and smell to it. The flavor in both were really bland but also overly sweet. The worst part was probably how soft the "fried" exterior was since there was no crunch whatsoever, and the bottoms were very wet and soggy. We ate a couple pieces of each, so it was definitely "edible", but not really all that enjoyable. I was also not able to find my go-to order on the menu (spicy salmon roll). We're still searching for a good sushi place in Brentwood since we recently moved here! read more

Honestly this review is about the service. If you're someone who doesn't care about that and only came for a food review I'd give food 3/5. It's mid tasting for the prices they charge. Anything fried will be soggy fyi. Service... seems like the girls just come to hang out with each rather than work. I walked in and they asked if it was to go and I said yes. They didn't direct me to come to them for pick up and we just stared at each other for a while until another girl asked if I needed seating and I said no to go and she directed me over. The girl who bags my items reviewed everything with me as she was bagging, sounded right. I paid for my food and I left. I really wish I read the reviews in advance because I wouldn't have ordered from here. I got two rolls from Doordash for dinner, I thought the price was fair and that the food was decent - a little fishier than I wanted if I had to be honest. Their tuna wasn't the best quality in my opnion. The ginger they gave me had some black spots on it but it didn't look like mold to me at the time. I assumed it was discoloration. I didn't eat the ginger and ate half the rolls I ordered before going to sleep. The next day by 1pm I was full blown sick. I'll spare you the details but it lasted two days and has been ruled as food poisoning by the doctors. Last night my family and I went to have dinner. We have gone to this restaurant multiple times each time in the last year. We have noticed that they have a large customer base and DoorDash. We went into the restaurant and ordered our food. We sat at the table for about 10 minutes. While multiple door dashers came through the door. Finally, the waitress took our order and started trickling our food to the table. Meanwhile, the one waitress was handling all of the DoorDash orders as more doordashers came into the store. It might sound petty, but if I'm a pain customer, and I take the time to drive to Your Store, come into your restaurant, sit down to eat. I feel that I should be taken care of as a priority. My inconvenience to DoorDash because of this. My family and I will not be returning to this sushi restaurant that we have frequent in for the last 10 years. Came here to celebrate my son birth. I have to say the place is clean and cozying. The food was fresh and tasty. Had the Marilyn Monroe Roll, which was pretty good. The Monkey fist's were good too. Let me set the ambiance. You walk in and banda music is playing in the background and the sushi chefs are not Japanese because they're singing along to the music. There is one sushi chef without a mask preparing food and one gal chef wearing a mask. The server is wearing a mask. Now that I've set the mood, we begin to order. You can see the back cooks not wearing masks. Start with gyoza & mix tempura. The gyoza is deep fried with a spicy sauce. The mix tempura are huge chunks of vegetables deep fried. Now I've never had tempura with two crowns of broccoli, two squash, carrots, two zucchini's and shrimp. I mean these are huge pieces I'm not exaggerating. Rolls: Cal Recall roll, deep fried with avocado, shrimp and crab & dragon roll with the standard unagi, avo, and shrimp. Both were decent size portion and served really quickly. The rolls were adequate. That's what I have to say. What takes the cake: the table had a cockroach, under the table next to a dirty napkin holding the table steady. I couldn't stomach food after this. I felt the whole restaurant wasn't clean and my skin was crawling. Someone send this place help. Someone send them an exterminator please. On 12/21/25, Yesterday. Around 12:45ish I went to get a simple Chirachi order, which in my personal opinion was a little on the expensive side for the amount of food I got to the quality of fish used on the dish, but its not about this at all, all of it came falling apart when i simply paid a total of 27.44U$ on 8 pieces of fish that I HAD TO THROW AWAY HALF, why you might ask? well, in between the 2 pieces of salmon there was a hair, but it doesn't end there, I wish it did, what really got me to actually come and make this review, was because there were TWO!!! 2 SEPARATE, DIFFERENT, FROM DIFFERENT BODY PARTS, which I presume one was hair the other one was face, because of its thickness and for the quick look I could see from the chef. Decided to try this place out of the blue and it was expensive but the food I got was good. I wanted to get a mix and match bento box but the waiter said we don't do that and that you have to pick one of the predetermined items on the menu only. Most items come with a California roll or shrimp tempura only for the lunch specials. I've never been to a Sushi place that doesn't have an option for their bento boxes (like pick two or three of a list of items). I asked the waiter why they don't offer that and he said "we've been doing it that way for 10 years". I asked for more rice and no salad and he didn't say it was $1.00 extra for that and when I got the check I was surprised to see that charge. We asked for a to go cup for my sons juice and he said "oh we don't do that here!" What?? You don't have to go cups?? My bbq short ribs that I got were delicious BUT it was most all bones and fat. Finally when she took my order she informed it was going to be 25-30 minutes wait. I COULDN'T BELIEVE this I just waited inside for 15 mins maybe longer. Still the nice person, I am. I paid for my CRAP left then came back. I'll say pictures are sooo nice to see and often used to influence you to buy things like FOOD !!! My sushi roll was HELLA nasty it fell apart before making it inside my mouth. It was soaked in watered down teriyaki sauce. I had previously looked at yelp photos to see what's poppin the most. I ordered the alen roll (correct spelling) it looked nothing like the pictures and it was an EPIC fail. It cost $20 (one damn roll) it had maybe 8 pieces NOT WORTH IT! The chef obviously wanted to take care of his friends! he could have made 3 rolls for them and at least ONE for us to balance things out since we only ordered 2 rolls! HORRIBLE Customer Service!
