First time having a bad experience here. I've been coming here since they opened this location. Just dined here last week, but today I was told by a waitress who spoke to the manager & stated I could not order just a side of rice for my 10 & 12 yo. I had the option to spend $16 on a vegetarian meal or $16 on a kids meal. My kids don't really care for the veggies & the chicken was not good today. I ordered two orders of sushi rolls, plus an adult meal & 3 sweet teas. The total of the check added up prior to adding two kids meals that my children didn't even eat. I questioned if it was new that I couldn't order rice as a side & I was told maybe the previous order waiters haven't caught it before...? Besides that the food was not great which was disappointing because I brought my daughter here for her birthday. Our waitress disappeared after salad & soup came & never returned to our table. A different waitress came to refill cups for everyone when check was being passed out. This is not our usual experience here, but paying over $100 for myself & two kids who didn't eat their food because we were forced to order it really put me off. read more

I was so excited to go to this restaurant for my birthday. I went with two of my friends. We had to wait a few minutes before our group could be seated. We started off with some drinks some soup and salad. I ordered the hibachi combination, dinner, chicken, and salmon with extra rice, that was delicious especially when you add the garlic sauce and the yum yum sauce. Because it was my birthday, the table sang happy birthday to me and I was able to get some extra shrimp as well as a fruit boat as a desert. It was one of my friends, first time experiencing hibachi, and she caught the shrimp in her mouth when the guy through it it was pretty cool. When I go back, I will try the scallops and steak dinner. read more

Spouse and I enjoyed lunch there the other day. It was terrific. Service was pleasant and of cause helpful. I was in my wheelchair and they made certain to allow me to choose a good place to sit at the hibachi table. Several others were at the table. The show part of the service was great. And I remember when Japanese steakhouses first opened in New York. I do miss the mustard sauce. They make a different sauce now. They still have the teriyaki sauce. I ordered the shrimp and steak. It was well made. Spouse got the filet mignon. It was well made and tender. They make fried rice with the meal and vegetables. The vegetables were perfectly seasoned. The meal started with soup and salad. Enjoyed everything very much. We will go back. Price wise. Lunch is a good deal. Dinners is much more expensive. But No sushi at lunch time. One of the best hibachi places in a 50 mile radius. Really enjoyed all of the food here it was fresh and lots of veggies which I prefer over too much rice. Even their salad was wild greens versus the standard iceberg lettuce. I look forward to dining there again soon ! read more

We made a reservation for 6 @ 5:00 on a Saturday night. We were greeted warmly and shown to our seats around the hibachi table. Our server was very attentive and helpful, our drinks and soup/salad arrived shortly after our entrees were selected. All around us were the sounds of people being entertained by hibachi chefs and our chef did not disappoint!! Our meals were created with flair and finesse, we were invited to be part of the excitement much to the fascination and delight of our younger diners! Our food was excellent-steak, shrimp, chicken and tuna all cooked to perfection-served with fried rice and vegetables seasoned and cooked (once again) to perfection!! We came here on a Sunday afternoon. It was busy but we were seated on time for our reservation. We had multiple servers so it was difficult to tell who was really assigned to our group and we ended up asking others not assigned to us for things and they were frustrated by this. Sorry, but don't have them bringing stuff if they aren't assigned and we won't ask them for things. The biggest reason for my rating was because the food just had zero flavor. Usually my food is salty at hibachi style places but I was using every sauce they gave me just to add flavor. For the amount of money you spend here I would expect a higher quality of cooking and flavoring. read more

Been here a few times now and no real complaints. I think the portions are kinda small for the prices, so I always have to pay for extra rice and veggies. The cooks are funny and entertaining. Food is always cooked to perfection. I usually do hibachi with shrimp, scallops, and sometimes chicken. Oh, their vegetable spring rolls appetizer with the sweet&sour dipping sauce is EVERYTHING. The only thing I miss are the hibachi noodles that come with your meal back home in Chicago. They don't serve the noodles but overall I enjoy coming here. This is a really nice "American" Japanese restaurant. Our server was prompt and kept our glasses full. Our chef was not as personable and entertaining as most. This was a disappointment because it was my 3-year-old grandson's first visit to a hibachi grill. He did cook our steak perfectly; however, the food is not seasoned well. Was in Richmond for a couple of days with a group of coworkers, we were split between sushi and Italian one night for dinner so naturally we go Hibachi and end up at Kanpai! I can say with confidence that not one of us regretted that decision at nights end. Once you have had one hibachi place, you have pretty much had them all. Kanpai was very similar to most others I have had in quality, chef showmanship and price...and there is nothing wrong with that! When you walk in, there is a small dining area to the right that houses the bar and sushi bar - this is for the folks who are not interested in hibachi (I feel bad for them!). Straight towards the back and to the right they have two large hibachi rooms with 4 stations seating 13 - 16 people comfortably. It is always fun to get a show with dinner and that we did! Our chef was personable, fun and talented with his tricks as well as with his cooking. Most of us ordered the steak and chicken, with a few folks ordering the scallops. All items turned out juicy and perfectly cooked! While our chef was excellent, the server had kind of a sour attitude it seemed and she was a little off putting - but, it wasn't enough to ruin the meal or change our overall opinion of the place! Overall, Kanpai delivered exactly what we were expecting it to...a great meal at a decent price prepared with flare sided with some great saki! I have a lot of business partners that travel to the Short Pump area and Kanpai has officially made the recommendation list! read more

This is an okay restaurant. They have really good waitresses however they really lack on portion size if your table has more then two people. They make the same amount of rice for seven people or if there is only two. The chef was good but cooked all the filets the same way when they were ordered three different ways. Not worth the price for scallops at all. Overall experience not worth the price. read more

DO NOT EAT AT KANPAI IN HOPEWELL!!!! We had a TERRIBLE first and ONLY experience at Kanpai Japanese restaurant on Oaklawn in Hopwell and want to spread the word. We ordered a 32 dollar dinner, a 50 dollar dinner, a 9.50 drink and an 8.50 drink. Total before tax should've been right around 100 bucks... with tax, we will say $110. Our bill came to us and was just short of $140. When we asked about it, we were told my meal didn't come with shrimp so the add-on was 8.75 and that there was an automatic 20% gratuity added to our bill. My meal (filet mignon, lobster and SHRIMP) is CLEARLY listed on their menu, and I am still unable to find anything in print on their website, including their menu, telling people they will be charged an automatic gratuity. Never heard of an automatic gratuity except sometimes with a large party... there were 2 of us. And if they're charging the group gratuity because their hibachi table seats 8, that's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. WE FEEL LIKE WE WERE STOLEN FROM!!! We complained to who I believe is the female owner and absolutely NOTHING was done to make us feel any less angry. That's a shame. As a business owner, especially in this day and age where people can easily spread the word about you, SHAME ON YOU for not at least attempting to make things right. And to then be told "thank you!" on our way out the door after complaining and expressing our discontent... we felt like we were mocked on top of it. read more

Unfortunately I didn't get any pictures but I would certainly recommend Kanpai. For hibachi, it's afford and don't get me started on the taste. There food is simply delicious. If you've never had hibachi before, usually you are seated with another group but they are Usually across from you. Fortunately, my group of 5 is as seated with a group of two so it wasn't awkward or anything. Let's get into the food, the meals range from about $25-$40+, they gave a nice selection of drinks. I wouldn't say the drinks were affordable because whats affordable or worth it is subjective. They were decently priced and I highly recommend the Buddha drink. It was recommended to me by the waitress and it was actually good. One thing I do have a bit of complaint about was the portions, the portions were actually a bit small for the pricing. I ordered the shrimp dinner and was a bit shocked at only getting about 6 or 8 shrimp with it but nevertheless, it was still pretty good read more

Food was very average for a Japanese Steakhouse, however I went for the convenience. I was disappointed with the amount of food you get and quality for the price. If you are planning to buy more than two kids meals for takeout, the restaurant requires you to also buy an adult entree. I always enjoy Kanpai whenever I go there. My tip for this restaurant would be to go during lunchtime - you can get pretty much the same meal (just slightly smaller) for less than half the dinner price. I met my friend for lunch and we were seated promptly. I ordered chicken and shrimp hibachi which came with miso soup and salad. Our chef did his usual egg flipping, volcano making thing and prepared everyone foods just as they requested. I think they have some of the best yum-yum sauce out there. The waitress checked on us frequently and kept our glasses full. I have nothing bad to say about this place. It's 100x better than Kabuto IMO. read more

Went there for my wife's birthday and expected much better ( had been there before , for my birthday was much better) . The chef wasn't that entertaining either .Didn't receive the traditional birthday celebration after meal was finished and while eating my meal found (bit into)pieces of egg shell in meal . The chefs are usually entertaining with their chef skills. I ordered hibachi steak and shrimp, which comes with grilled vegetables and fried rice (soup and salad as well). I thought Kanpai entire meal was tasty. Everything was cooked and seasoned well. Sauces are not watered down, which I appreciate. Service is usually good. There's plenty of parking in front of the restaurant. If you have a large group, it's best to call ahead and make reservations. Kanpai has lunch specials! This is a right down the fair way Japanese hibachi style steakhouse. Think Benihana without the brand recognition. It is good food, but you are paying a premium for your own person chef experience. I arrived with five work friends and we had the chef ourselves for lunch. He was low brow funny in a very cute sort of way. Perhaps being thru it so many times, I'm jaded. For a kid or someone new to it, it may be more fun. He cooked all the meals at once and everyone received essentially the same thing. My starter was an onion soup. Think water with some salty onion broth dropped into it. We had a great conversation and the cook seemed like a third wheel in the experience. He cooked everyone fried rice. I had the shrimp and chicken combination. The chicken and rice were highly sauced, but I enjoyed adding the table sauces to it anyway. Overall a decently entertaining meal. I would go again with a group if someone wanted to go or if there were kids involved. However, I doubt if I would just cook up the idea on my own. read more

I am naturally a vegetarian so I asked for just a plate of fried rice and I was told I couldn't have soup or salad with my fried rice, unsure why. I only ended up getting a side of fried rice and nothing else, not even sauce. The waitress seemed confused on why I wanted fried rice and didn't check in with my order, she just wrote down side of fried rice when I didn't ask for that. She also didn't ask us if we wanted dessert. Overall, the small bit of fried rice was good, but disappointed that I wasn't offered anything else with my meal. read more

I love the salad because of the dressing but that is literally the same at any japanese steakhouse so nothing really to add there. They gave us onion soup instead of miso, acknowledged that they did this when they gave us our order, and still charged us for it - not sure how we let that one go. read more
