Beautiful "copper" tree
Tharin W.

One of my all time favorite hikes! Kanarra Falls offered wide open views and tiny "alien planet" like spaces. This hike only allows a few groups at a time, which was a big bonus for us as we loved the privacy. We hiked in early June, allowing for a wonderful warm day that wasn't too much. The shaded portions and streams helped you cool down.

Definitely a must do hike when in the area or plan for it like I did. I have been wanting to complete this hike for a while and finally able to last summer with a good friend. What you need to know - You must purchase a pass in advance as they only allow 150 people per day to complete the hike. The cost is $12. I purchased our pass in May for early July. Next the hike is in between St. George and Cedar City, Utah. We rented an AirBNB which was five minutes from the trailhead in the town of Kanarra. This hike may only be a day trip for you but we chose to stay overnight. There is a large parking and picnic area at the trailhead and there is a little office where you check in and show your pass to the clerk. The hike is open 7am - 7pm during spring, summer and fall. Winter hours vary. The trail itself is only 3.7 miles out and back. It starts on a service road but then quickly narrows into the canyon and your water hike begins. Because we went in July, I found the water to be pretty warm. I wore water sandals, quick drying shorts and a t-shirt. I was very comfortable and my feet were never cold. Be sure to wear comfortable hiking footwear whether it's sandals or waterproof shoes. The water never went higher than my ankles. It will depend on the previous winter as to how much water is flowing. At times, the trail may even close for safety reasons. There is a couple of small challenges like bouldering and climbing a few logs to reach various levels but these are not difficult obstacles and they make the hike fun. You will climb a steel staircase which is right next to one of the waterfalls and it's so pretty. The trails ends at a gorgeous giant water fall flowing through huge boulders and it's a great area to enjoy your lunch, meditate or just relax next to the water. Kids can play too. We were lucky to have hiked on a weekday and had the whole place to ourselves. Every mile of this hike is so pretty and I was smiling the whole day. So many lovely trees, flowers and the water is so clear and clean. So much to photograph and such a fun hike. No pets allowed on this hike so leave Rover at home. Only service animals are allowed and YOU must clean up after them as this trail lies in a watershed which provides drinking water to residents. Most importantly remember to LEAVE NO TRACE. Pack in and pack out. Enjoy this epic Utah hike!

Bathrooms up the hill - main ones are closed for winter months

This is a MUST DO hike in this area ! You will get wet - take extra clothes and leave in the car . Also I wouldn't start this hike after 1 pm as in the fall and winter months it will be dark and cold by the time you get back to your car . Make sure to take a hiking pole .. they will help you cross the water . The rocks are somewhat slippery and you may fall into the creek ... I did lol! Have fun !

The new ladder!
Corynn B.

This is my second time back to Kannaraville Falls and it is such a beautiful hike. The first time I went, they still had the original ladder which was super janky and sketchy to climb, so I was excited to see the new ladder that was much less intimidating to climb! The trail is about 5-6 miles RT, but it relatively flat for the majority of the hike. The entire hike is alongside a creek, and requires you to wade in and out of the water multiple times throughout. I would definitely recommend water shoes, chacos, or neoprene socks to keep your feet warm and dry during the hike! We didn't bring any waterproof shoes this time and it wasn't unbearable, but it would've been a little bit more enjoyable if we had. Especially once you get to the slot canyon section of the hike - you have to wade through ankle deep water the entire way. You have to get a permit in order to hike this, but permits are only $12. You can order them online, and they're very easy to get. It seems like Saturdays are the busiest days to go. We ordered our tickets on Monday and there were plenty still available for that Friday and Sunday. Saturday permits were completely sold out when we checked two weeks in advance. We went later in the evening since the days have been longer and it only took us a couple hours to finish. There was hardly anyone else on the trail, we passed a couple people but had the slot canyon and falls to ourselves for quite some time. We climbed the ladder and went up to the second falls but didn't go past that. You can go further, but it sounded like the water was pretty high and was very cold. This is a beautiful hike and perfect to do with your family and is even great for people who aren't avid hikers. Definitely worth the trip and the permit!

The water is very rocky while walking part of the trail

What a beautiful, fun, and scenic hike this was! I did this hike back in October of 2022. It wasn't difficult. Just take your time and make sure to wear good hiking sneakers or boots. Also pack a pair of water shoes for when you reach the water part of the hike. You will be walking through water ankle deep for a lot of this trail and the water is pretty cold. At the end of the hike if you complete it you will be in water about waist deep! A hiking stick would definitely help. I wish I had one, but now I know for next time. The permit ticket to reserve your date was only $12, but it's non-refundable if you need to cancel. The website is www.Kanarra falls.com. When you reach the first big water fall their is a ladder which was great and definitely made getting across a lot easier. Hike at your own risk definitely check the website the day of and before getting there to make sure their is no flash flood warning. I can't wait to come back again and do this hike with my daughters :) It a must and it's only 2 1/2 hours traveling from Las Vegas! I wouldn't recommend bringing your dogs. They also have restrooms in the free parking area and they also provide two feet/boot washing stations by the restrooms. Also cellphone service is limited throughout this hike.

This hike is beautiful. I did this back in the beginning of October and the weather was perfect. The water was very cold though. I used water shoes and the bottom of my feet were hurting the next few days from walking on the rocks. I seen other hikers wearing open toe water sandals that had a thicker bottom which I'm sure helped as far as a cushion for the bottom of your feet. The hike took a little over 2 hours to the end and back. The water at the highest point was up to my waist. It's about 45 mins north of St George area.

Snow in November!

One of the best hikes in Southern utah! Read carefully before going! -buy tickets online before going. It is $12/person. Save the picture on your phone. -i arrived by 7am. No one was there and i don't regret it because we were the only ones there and got to take as many pictures with no interruption. We didn't even show our tickets because no one was at the ticket booth! Do not come late (after 8 or 9) or you'll have high traffic and crowding. -during the summer, you may get away with hiking sandals or regular water shoes, but in the fall/winter, you either need 1) neoprene socks and preferably tall waterproof hiking shoes (they will still get wet) OR 2) buy $20 pvc boots from local hiking store (sportsmans near cedar city) and have regular tennis shoes in your back pack. Start with your tennis shoes and switch into your pvc boots for the first or two little streams you come across. Once you start seeing less dirt roads and more water, just wear your pvc boots directly on the river and trek up EASY all the way to the canyon. The pvc boots saved me from even touching water. I felt bad for ppl who just came with tennis shoes and regular socks... They were miserable! -the water is less than knee deep or just ankle deep most of the time. Pretty shallow but can be high during periods of rain or snow runoff. -there are many paths that eventually lead to the canyon. Just keep to the path. -bring water and snacks. A hiking stick could be helpful. -there are bathrooms at the entrance parking lot but if you come too early, they won't be open. I just used the bathroom in the forest because no one was there -free parking! I would def. Come back. Unfortunately the first ladder was completely frozen in November over so we weren't able to go far but i would come back in the summer!

Breathtaking! First falls on the trail.

This is a must do hike! I am so happy we made it a point to come here! Definitely not disappointed! LOCATION: About an hour from Springdale, you'll find this beauty. Sorry, since I'm not a local or super familiar with the surrounding areas, best I can say is Google Map it. It'll lead you right there! But it's definitely worth a stop if you're visiting the nearby parks such as Zion National Park. RESERVATIONS: Only 150 hikers are allowed on the trail per day. You MUST make a reservation in advance to be granted access to this trail. Visit the following website: https://www.kanarrafalls.com/ Each reservation is $12 per person. Depending on the time of year, these reservations can book out several weeks in advance! So plan your trip early and book a slot! The reservations are non-refundable. PARKING/RESTROOMS: Parking is easy and free with your permit reservation. Because the trail is only accessible with a permit, the lot will never get crazy busy! There are restrooms in the parking lot. Please make sure to go before your adventure as there are no restrooms along the trail! TRAIL: According to the Kanarra Falls website, the trail is approximately 3.8 miles and will take anywhere from 2-4 hours to complete. The trail is relatively simple to follow. If you have AllTrails or similar, downloading the map is always a good backup. The trail follows the river for most of the hike. You can opt to just commit and wet your feet to avoid having to climb up and around rocks and to stay on the dry parts of the trail. You'll be able to hike faster if you just commit to getting your feet wet early on. Be careful as the rocks are uneven and can be slippery. The trail leads you into a slot canyon which is so amazing when the sun hits the walls! Time your hike right and you'll be amazed! But if you're going during monsoon season, be careful of flash flooding! There are two waterfalls and going past the second waterfalls is off limits. The first waterfall is the most pictured waterfall (with the ladder to the right of it.) During the summer when we did this hike, the ladder was simply a log with rungs drilled into it. Doable but you really had to be careful. As of November 2021, they installed a legit ladder with a handrail! Now all the new hikers have got it easy! GEAR: Definitely pack the following: 1) a good camera! (Maybe one that's waterproof in case you drop it.) 2) Water and snacks 3) Shoes you don't mind getting soaked. We just used old running shoes and they worked perfectly. 4) Neoprene socks if you get cold easily. I was glad to have them. 5) Hiking sticks if you have them for balance Have fun! We sure did! :)

My second time on this hike and it was just as enjoyable as the first! Maybe even more now that they've replaced and installed actual stairs at the waterfall. Definitely feels much more stable climbing up now!

Must purchase a permit online before visiting! $12/person and don't lag on it because you for sure won't be able to buy tickets the day of. We visited in mid October and the water level never really got past our knees. But it was freezing cold! Highly recommend this trail over the Narrows. You get essentially the same thing but with less people since they cap it at 150 people a day. We arrived around 8:30AM and saw only 2 other groups the entire hike. There's a small parking lot at the start of the trail and a little office where a worker will scan your barcode tickets. Before you even get to the river, you'll have to hike a bit of dry land. Most of us just decided to hike it in our water shoes and it wasn't bad at all. The nice thing about this hike is there isn't really one single trail. And I'll admit we got lost a couple of times but as long as you follow the river, you'll be good. The trail ends when you get to the second slot canyon. They used to have a ladder to go over the waterfall but it's been broken for a couple of years now. Been twice now and it's been fun every single time. If you visit in the Spring/Summer, the water might be warm enough where you can slide down a rock slide!

This place is one of the best kept secrets in southern Utah! I hate to share it with everyone but it truly is a wonder of the world that everyone should see at least once in their life. Yes! Waterfalls in the desert! They are real I promise. Red rock Slot canyons, relaxing sounds with waterfalls, gorgeous backgrounds what else more could you ask for?? You do have to have a permit now since it has e become so popular but you will be happy there are limited people on this hike.

This is by far one of the coolest hikes I have ever done, not because it's the most beautiful or challenging but because of the lack of crowds as well as the views at the end! There is a cap of 120 people/day on the trail and I only saw 4 people in the slot canyon the whole time I was there! That being said, if you want to do this hike, go online and snag tickets early as they are now booked 2 months in advance for the summer. The hike is around 4-5 miles round trip and takes you from the outskirts of the town of Kanarraville to Kanarra Creek Falls which is located inside a beautiful narrow slot canyon. There's a fun ladder that you can (and should) climb adjacent to the first waterfall (not sure if it's OSHA approved though) that will take you onwards to a water slide and a second waterfall (travel beyond the second waterfall is not recommended). Make sure you bring water shoes or chacos like I did as most of the hike is a water hike like the Narrows! It's somewhat technical at times with some mild boulder scrambling). Tons of fun though even if you're a beginner hiker though just be careful about slips and falls. Definitely would recommend to anyone who can get their hands on a ticket! Only 30-45 min north of St George or Hurricane if you're visiting Zion NP anyways.

This is my of my favorite hikes in Utah. It's not too difficult, and has spectacular views through narrows, and ending at a beautiful waterfall. A permit is required and only 150 are granted each day. We reserved ours in advance. Each permit costs $12. I'm so glad that they limit the number of people on this hike because it just makes the experience so much nicer. In Zion tracking the falls you see thousands of people, here, we felt we had the place to our selves. The hike isn't too strenuous and much of it is shaded so it doesn't get too hot. We stopped half way to have our picnic lunch. Wading through the river (ankle deep) to get to the final waterfall was so much fun. You can climb an old ladder to get over the fall and then look back down. Well worth doing.

Not sure if that was the best way or not. The parking lot is not huge, and you can't park in the designated camping area spots. There are plenty of picnic tables, probably more than parking spaces. There are at least 20 tables there. There are a few trails to choose from. Very close the parking and campsites is a short 1/4 hike (or shorter) to the dinosaur prints. There is a hike in the other direction to the mini waterfall and pond. Probably about a mile or a little over a mile (1direction). We also found an old almost petrified bristlecone tree (that was neat). We got lucky with the weather for Dec, it was probably about 60 degrees and very nice. I saw that in the summer it can be over 110 so I am glad that we got the nice weather. The red /orange scenery is spectacular and representative of the area, like it is at zion, bryce, snow canyon, pioneer park, etc. We enjoyed a picnic lunch there, and we had a blue bird, a scrub jay, come join us and beg for food.
