Wasn't totally convinced with diagnosis so stopped at Dads as had good things about them. Very quickly confirmed that it was not a transmission problem and the symptoms suggested electrical. Gave me a few DIY checks to perform and was quickly able to narrow it down to an alternator issue messing up my transmission. Some free common sense advice that wasn't so common sense at the bigger shop down the street.

Stopped at Dads where 10 minute description of symptoms and they were able to pretty much guarantee that it wasn't transmission and likely something electrical going on. They gave me a few DIY checks for me to do and the next day I replaced my alternator for considerably less than $3000. Thumbs up to Dads Transmission! . I'm sure National does a good job rebuilding transmissions - but lets save that option till you need a rebuild.
