But after trying them out at the Philly Inquirer Event, this will be the restaurant I check out when they finally come back to their location (this place is temporarily closed due to a fire). They had this amazing Malaysian pulled milk tea called Teh Tarik and Kaya Toast. The Teg Tarik was sweet but not too sweet. It was interested how they stirred the tea similar to in India where they move it from one container to another in a juggling type fashion. Writing this review very late ... our dinner at Kampar was actually the night before their fire! So glad we snuck in before the tragedy, and we're hoping they are able to reopen soon. Kampar is close to home, so it's been on our list for a while, especially since our Malaysian cuisine experience is scant. We easily made reservations with friends for a Friday night. The reservation process is a little confusing since you can make res for downstairs or upstairs; the downstairs area features rotating chefs and their cuisines vs the upstairs area is true Kampar. We were happy to dine in the upstairs dining room, which had great ambience and vibes. It was dark and moody with simple candles and artwork around, plus a chill playlist. Our server was helpful in walking us through the menu and providing suggestions on number of dishes, etc. We started off with drinks. I love how their menu was separated into various types of drinks (light & bright, spirit forward, fun & fundamental, etc.), and I was blown away by all the unique pairings in each drink. It was a tough decision, but I opted for the Karbonat, which featured beet, sweet potato, and mandarin flavors - it was so fun and delicious! For round 2, I went for the coconut clarified whiskey tarik, loving the inclusion of banana leaf and Japanese vermouth. All my dining partners also really enjoyed their drinks, having a mixture of cocktails and wines / beers (something for everyone!). For eats, we debated just getting the Kenduri, where the chef simply cooks for you, vs ordering on our own. We ultimately decided to choose our own adventure, ordering the goat rendang, sayur goreng, ayam goreng berempah, and chili pan mee to split. We each got our own nasi lamak to soak up all the goodies. Every dish was beautifully crafted with quality ingredients and was so delicious. I lvoed the presentation of the nasi lamak, and my standout dishes were the rendang and ayam goreng berempah (a surprise hit). We all enjoyed each dish, and we were sufficiently full with this shared order (too stuffed for dessert, though). The price is reasonable - we spent less with our method of ordering than we would have with getting the tasting menu. The cocktails were a little on the pricier side, but given the uniqueness of the drinks, I get it. Kampar did not disappoint, and it was a great meal to share with friends. Overall, we had a good experience here. We arrived a few minutes early and were told that we had to wait for our table, which we expected. We ended up being seated about 20 min after our reservation time due to the table not being vacated. The staff was very appreciative of our patience and comped our first round of drinks. I never got to try Sate Kampar when it was open so I didn't want to miss the reopening of kampar! Grabbed some girlfriends and into the city we ventured. We thought all the food tasted great and portions were decent, there were a lot of reviews about the portions being small. But my fave part was probably the drink menu lol. Location: Near 7th and South Street - Easy to find. Atmosphere/Decor: I enjoyed the ambiance here. The decor has a distinct Malaysian vibe, which adds to the overall experience. Service: Excellent! I've had Malaysian food with more depth of flavor, so I was expecting a bit more. Food Breakdown: Tahu Sumbat: A solid starter. Some might find it too sweet, but I enjoyed the balance and the slight spice kick. Nasi Lemak: For the price, I expected more than just rice, half a boiled egg, and scattered peanuts. The rice was also a bit overcooked, which could have been better. Maggie Goreng: This dish was pretty standard. So excited for Kampar's return! The new upstairs space is beautiful, a great vibe for dinner with friends or a date, and I even saw some families. Walk in only and there is some bar seating. They were able to do one of the cocktails with a shrub as a mocktail and it was so good! The achat was great (a little spicy!), we loved the chili pan mee (also a bit of a kick) and the Wagyu mushroom dish. The carrot cake was something I've only ever had in Singapore and was a group favorite. The instant noodles= instant nostalgia. Prices were reasonable but portions were not huge. This is one of those places where you might want to order an extra dish if you're not sure you ordered enough. Luckily the whole menu looks great! The hosts and servers were lovely and the food came out fast! We were missing a few serving spoons and small plates and chopsticks but those kind of hiccups are to be expected in the first few weeks of opening and when we asked they came right away. I was not wowed by Kampar and I really wanted to be. In short: the portions are very small and prices are very high. I tried the beef rendang, which--while flavorful--was a little tough, overwhelmingly sweet, and priced much higher than I would have expected given the portion size and the fact that it's marked "for the table." It was a little too much for me, but it definitely would not have served two people. And at $25, it also did not come with rice. That was an additional $5! Also noteworthy in terms of price is the 5% employee benefits fee automatically added to every bill. Standard additional gratuity (marked starting at 20% on the receipt) is expected as well. Dessert was better. I very much enjoyed the pie de limon; if you're into key lime pie, this is a cousin. Ultimately, though, while I know food is expensive these days, this place seems above normal pricy. I will probably stick to other places where I get a little more bang for my buck. read more

I don't think this place is as bad as some reviews paint it. The food portions are actually quite decent, and I liked the flavors on everything I ordered except for Nasi Lemak. I will say the food is less spicy than I would typically anticipate for Malay food but I am assuming that is to cater to Philly customer service profile. So many visits to Sate Kampar when it was in South Philly. I was eagerly anticipating the opening of this place. I was able to get a reservation for my friend and daughter and me for Friday night. We were lead upstairs by a very gracious hostess into the bustling dining room. Such great energy in this place. The wallpaper is beautiful , great lighting and big windows in the back. We started with cocktails and they were balanced and delicious. We ordered the chips and curry, dragon meat (sweet pork jerky), rendang daging (braised beef and spices and coconut cream) , nasi lemak (coconut rice, crispy anchovies, peanuts, sambal wrapped in a banana leaf) tauhu sambat (tofu stuffed with vegetables with a peanut sauce) , ayem goreng berempah (fried chicken with sambal) and we received a complimentary dish of beautiful pickled vegetables. This place just recently opened so I'm leaving room for the menu to settle in. My favorite order of the night was the nasi lemak. The steam billows out when the banana leaf exposes the delicious coconut rice and peanuts. I liked the taste of the crispy anchovies but one was a bit too crispy to chew. As I said, the flavor was there and I do like crispy... however the crispiness was a bit on another level at times. I definitely love a fried potato but the chips and curry fell just a bit flat. The curry gravy didn't have much flavor (I asked for salt) and I was wondering if those were house steak-cut potatoes? One was a bit cold in the center. It threw me just a bit. The braised beef was so flavorful! The menu describes this item as being slow cooked and the depth of flavor was there. The tofu was cooked well but the sauce didn't seem to impart much flavor. The sauce on the crispy chicken that we ordered was definitely tasty but the chicken itself did taste a bit dry. Crispy skin is so delicious but only if accompanied with juicy meat inside but that wasn't really happening . I remembered this food exploding with flavor and I didn't get much of that. However, the menu items are plenty and I always appreciate sharing food at a table and the variety that it provides. In my opinion, there were definitely some items on the menu that fell a bit flat. However, I've experienced this food in the past and the deliciousness was over whelming. I'm going to give it time and also make room for an off night. Opening weekend for Kampar, which has been a long awaited comeback since Saté Kampar had to close many years ago, and I was excited to try the food again. The upstairs was first to open while the downstairs is in the planning process. After walking up the narrow stairs, you are brought to "Kongsi", an almost hidden oasis with a trendy bar reminisce of nightlife in Asia, and the dining area pays homage to street stalls or restaurants while you can gaze through the faux windows. It definitely brought me back to my fond memories in Asia. The service was 5/5, with the friendly greetings of the staff and our service staff. We did a walk-in and were immediately seated. It wasn't super busy thankfully. Everyone seemed to collaborate and help each other out with excited teamwork. I also noticed Chef Ange mingling amongst various diners and introducing others to certain dishes..unfortunately she did not stop by our table, but maybe that's because we look like we know what we're doing. The food..now let's talk about the food 3/5. Keep in mind, the concept is street food. My partner and I liked half of our dishes. They nailed the chili pan mee, spicy, savory, gooey egg and noodles cooked just right. I also liked the A5 Wagyu Suen Poon Chee, perfectly seasoned and had the umami from the shitake and oyster sauce which I enjoy. We wish there were more wagyu pieces, of course. It's definitely meant for a side. The other two, fell short of our expectations. As an avid luo bo gao aka turnip cake lover, when I saw the Char Tau Keuh, I was hype because this is one of my favorite dishes growing up. However, this version was SO salty it was almost unbearable. We tried to eat it between the other items to dilute it but unfortunately it wasn't salvageable. The Rendang Daging was also incredibly sweet, like dessert sweet. It was amazingly tender, but the sweetness was uncomfortable. My partner, being an avid carnivore, forced himself to finish it because we cannot waste meat LOL. I usually get Rendang the Indonesian way, so I'm questioning if this is truly how Malaysians prepare it..however when I think back to my Malaysian aunties, nobody makes it this sweet. With some adjustments, this could be better. For dessert we had the Sago Gula Melaka, which has sago and coconut cream, delicious. The container/jar is not ideal since it's very hard to scoop with the spoon. I think a bowl is ideal for this experience. Overall, decor is cute, service is awesome, but the food could be better executed. Personally, I would prefer to go to other spots to get my Malay fix. I was really disappointed by this place, both by the food and the prices. Everything we got was portioned so small, and we were still hungry after eating here. In addition, the food just wasn't very good. Nasi lemak - 2/5. This was mostly rice and there were barely any toppings. Fried chicken - 2/5. The batter on this was so thin and grainy, it tasted like something I could've made in my own air fryer. A5 wagyu suen poon chee ($28) - 2/5. I was excited about this dish because of the taro balls, but it was basically a stir fry and the sauce didn't taste like much. I also don't think it needed wagyu, since the meat kind of got all the flavor cooked out of it anyway. Tauhu sumbat ($15) - 2/5. We reserved a spot on the first floor couple weeks in advance. The restaurant has multiple floors, but its first floor is quite small. The table barely fit us all in. It felt like a large family dinner. Our neighbors were very friendly and welcoming. The first floor is reserved for experimental chefs that are getting their feet wet. Each chef would stay there at least two years before rotating out. The chef on rotation was Chef Reuby, who specializes in Indian cuisine. He and his mother, Ruby, prepared and served us most of our preset meal for this dinner. The Samosa chaat was moist, tangy and savory. The sauces spread over them really enhanced its flavors. The tandoori chicken was marinated so well and tasted amazing when eaten with onion garnish and green sauce. The roti was toasted to perfection that only a master chef with a wood oven could prepare. Really enjoyed the experience of him describing and cooking the roti in front of us. The lamb kebabs were so soft that they easily fell apart in our mouth. The chai tres leches was soo delicious. The milky texture and moist cake made it an unforgettable dessert. Never had this experience before and would love to do it again. read more

While the concept they tried to recreate was amazing, flavors in my opinion didn't quite match up. I was really looking forward to some bold flavors and did find it in Rendang Daging and the burger, it sadly didnt show boldly enough in Chili Pan Mee which I thought was watered down in general but also due to noodles not properly being strained after cooking. I was really looking forward to coming here and sadly had a very unpleasant experience thanks to the GM. I went with my girlfriend after a meal to get an after dinner drink, as we heard the drinks were delicious. The GM greeted us and sat us and loudly next two different parties told us he refused to serve us any drinks because we were intoxicated. While I can assure you we weren't intoxicated and were also looking forward to trying the burger; the experience was incredibly embarrassing. As a 10 year veteran of the restaurant industry, I completely understand preventing over serving. However, in this exchange he loudly told us "I could have my ass handed to me serving you. Best of luck". Even if he was correct in his assumption, he perhaps could've used some tact rather than making a scene. Other than food, service and welcoming vibes play a large role in my restaurant choices. Will not be back and hope anyone else who enters isn't greeted so rashly. read more

The subtotal - before taxes and gratuity - should be the sum of the prices listed next to each individual item that was ordered. In very fine print at the bottom of the menu it stated that an extra 5% is added for living wage and other stuff (even if you are a solo diner). This should be incorporated into the price next to each individual item even if it means you have to increase each item's listed price there by 5%. Otherwise, it is is a restaurant's way of making items look cheaper than they really will be before taxes and gratuity. I didn't discover this extra 5% until my bill came. If I own a hardware store and have this fine-print sign hanging somewhere about this extra 5%, you would feel a bit duped if you came to the register and discovered that the prices on each item then have an additional 5% tacked onto them. You would ask why I didn't just incorporate that into the price on each item's sticker. Next thing you know, establishments will have items all priced cheaply, with the fine print saying there will be - an extra 5% added to the subtotal for service, - an extra 4% added for the electricity cost, - an extra 3% added for the cost of the water and gas, - an extra 2% added for the cost of the alarm system, and an extra 1% added for the cost of the wholesaler's delivery. Wouldn't you be baffled too by this? The frustrating thing is that annoyed diners are going to take this pricing discrepancy out on the servers in the gratuity, especially if this extra 5% is already called a service fee. I realize a lot of people don't tip 15% or more and that this is a way to make up for that, but it is off-putting for others. I feel like this is the restaurant owner's justification for paying the workers a lower base wage: not cool. This stuff needs to be factored into the base price. Be inclusive in the number you put next to each item on the menu. (An extra star for them scrounging together some food for me after the kitchen had closed.) Still, I left in a bit of dumbfounded confusion. I have never seen this elsewhere. read more

The nasi lamak was delicious and i would recommend add the additional rendang to eat with the rice. This is the first time i've seen this wagyu dish in a malaysian/ hakka style. It was good but I wish there were more wagyu pieces because i couldn't taste it as much when eating it with the other ingredients. Overall, good atmosphere and friendly staff. I found the cocktails to be just ok with no frills to make up for the price (almost 20$ -no garnish, cool glassware etc) . The food was hit or miss but all portions were really small and did not make up for it in flavor. About half of the 8 dishes we tried were disappointing. The tofu dish was sad, the burger was the highlight. Some of the food also seemed to come out not very fresh like it was sitting for awhile? We left craving a more authentic experience and with no drama would just would not return or recommend. I think a lot of other reviews on here reflect our experience . This is excellent food and I really enjoyed dining here. You are meant to order maybe 2 dishes per person and share. My suggestions are the char tau kueh (daikon and egg, the best dish), nasi lemak coconut rice with egg and crispy fish, rendang daging (tender braised beef), and definitely get the achat (pickled veggies) to tie it all together with some crunch. Cocktails were great. All in with apps and mains and drinks maybe $60 a person which I find to be totally fair. Great gluten free and vegetarian options. They also have a 9PM secret menu of $10 rice bowls and roti. So if you want a great deal, do a late dinner here. I came all the way from San Francisco for this and I would come back. Major disappointment. The food was expensive for such tiny portions and lacked any interesting flavor. The fact that they call themselves authentic Malaysian street food is laughable and really just a marketing gimmick. Much better food can be found on the street at a food truck on any college campus in Philly. Doesn't real feel like street food if you pay lots of money and leave hungry. The "shareable" beef rendang was absolutely an Americanized knockoff of rendang that tasted like shitty pot roast with sweetened cream of coconut (like Coco Lopez sweet), and for $25 could've been a much much larger portion. Seriously don't understand how this could reasonably be considered shareable for any more than 1.5 people. Honestly the whole time it felt like this restaurant is geared towards people who don't have any concept of how Malaysian food should taste. Nasi lemak was basically a small serving of rice with barely any anchovies or other toppings. Tauhu sumbat was flavorless. Char tau kueh was basically a beansprout and egg stir-fry with daikon, nothing special (reminded me of your basic Chinese takeout chop suey). My #1 recommendation would be to just go literally any of the amazing Southeast Asian restaurants in South Philly, even a mediocre one could blow this place out of the water. Walking in, you're greeted by a mysterious aura that unfolds into a retro cheque atmosphere once you get upstairs. There's a beautiful bar, with a great selection of drinks and wine. The staff is welcoming, and very helpful. It's a dimly lit ambiance which is common in the Philly food science but I appreciated the individual live candles at each table. Here's where things started to confuse me a bit. Under the assumption that the restaurant is inspired by street food, the prices and portions didn't match. All plates are small and made to share meaning that as a table of four you'll need to order 6 or 7 items to get a complete meal. Most menu items are priced between $12 and $30. While you can tell there's a peanut and spice blend that's infused well across all the dishes, outside of the ramly burger many of the dishes lack a distinct punch or intense flavor that you'd expect from a restaurant of this caliber. Most of the dishes were good, but not memorable. It's a fun place to go with friends, share dishes, catch up, but when you leave spending over $200 for a group of 4 it doesn't feel like street food. Now I understand that the food is street food inspired but it may be too street food inspired for my taste. I really enjoyed my visit and I'm interested in coming back after Kampar has been open for a bit longer and settled on a stronger identity as it really has some cool concepts it's working with. read more

Phenomenal! Definitely going back for more. Every morsel of food we ate was delicious. If wanted to order and eat more, but my body physically could not. The chicken was the best chicken I've had in a really long time. The Beef Rendang was everything. We paired the meat dishes with the Nasi Lemak and the Maggi Goreng. The service was excellent. Our waitress was extremely friendly and took care to tell us details about each dish which helped our decision making. I'm excited for what's more to come from this restaurant. read more

Having lived in SE Asia, I was very excited to experience Kampar. I loved the way the room was decorated. Felt almost like you were in a Malaysian village. The music playing supported that feeling. The food, however, was disappointing. We had the stuffed tofu. Flavor was good but the texture a little rubbery. The Ramen noodles were the best dish but could have used more flavor...a little bland. I was so looking forward to the beef redang and was so disappointed!!! I have never had a sweet version and the sweetness ruined it.
