I believe I have returned 3 times to this establishment because of our pleasant experience on each occasion. Whether it be for a girlfriend's birthday celebration, a couple's date night, or simply in need of restocking on candle supply, we have loved the process and the service beyond! A newer addition to this location compared to my first time is that they now offer their own branded bottles of wine in addition to BYO. The staff is so down to earth, friendly and informative as they walk you through step by step in order to craft your very own Anthropologie-esque aromas! We had the liberty to truly take our time and did not feel rushed in anyway. You can bring small bites to pick from and they even offered to capture the evening with a Polaroid. This sounded like a cute date idea until I looked at the details. It's called Wax + Wine, but...there's no wine. For $124, we can create two tiny candles, and we are allowed the privilege of BRINGING OUR OWN WINE. That's right: There's no wine at Wax + Wine. It's a ballsy name for the business, y'all. (BTW: We're also allowed to bring champagne or beer--which DOUBLY negates the name of the place.) I was about to close the browser tab when I spotted something even more egregious: "Tap water and cups provided, ice, plates + utensils are not provided." That is exactly the grammar they used, so we can't be 100% sure, but I'm 99% sure they're saying they don't even have ice! At a place called Wax + Wine, I'm not expecting plates or utensils. What I AM expecting is a fun experience making candles and drinking wine. Wine sometimes requires ice. Wine ALWAYS requires wine. I DID finally close the tab, but the last thing I saw was a button to "Purchase A Gift Card." My instant mental response was "Buy an ice machine." Cute idea. Poorly executed. Atmosphere: So cozy! You walk in and the atmosphere feels more intimate (it's more dimly lit) - great for being with friends or a date activity. The place is very pretty, looks upscale. It's in such a great neighborhood. Our server, Mia, was fabulous! She was so knowledgeable and patient. She really took great care of us. We brought our own drinks and goodies to eat, but they have a full bar and charcuterie trays you can order. The candles have. soy-coconut wax blend and the scents are essential oils. These candles don't bother my allergies at all! The candle jars are large and the candle will burn for 40 hours. This place is big enough for parties or just a table for two. The process is fun. Warning: their candles or the wix might be poor quality... health concern Do you want black soot all over your nose and throat or your room?! I didn't want to publicly write this review but I contacted them weeks ago and still haven't gotten any response so I wanted to warn others. The experience we had at this place was 5/5 when we went to make our candles. We were also lucky because we went on a not so crowded day so we had some private time in the scent room before others started coming in. The candles are packaged nicely and you get to pick 2 scents for each candle you make. Staff was friendly and wasn't rushing us. There was a wide variety of scent selections we had so much fun smelling and paring. This place is romantic and perfect for a date night until.... Worst NIGHTMARE HAPPENED. We went home with our candles with no instruction or warning whatsoever about burning these candles. I assumed the typical (2-4hr) burning time should be fine. I burned my first candle for about 2.5-3 hrs in my bedroom before blowing it out and going to sleep. Next morning: I woke up with BLACK soot in my nose and also BLACK mucus down my throat. I attempted to cough it out for a good 10 min and still had remaining soot around my throat. My nose and throat were irritated. This was DISGUSTING. I never had issues with burning bath and body works candles. This made me think that the quality of the candle/wix this place provide is not good quality!!! I'm so grossed out I have to toss my remaining four candles out because there was no way I want to risk having soot in my body again. I looked online and saw people could have died from this. I went here with my boyfriend for my birthday. I had a lovely time but to pay almost 50 a person you would expect SOMETHING would be included. Our instructor was lovely and it was a fun time but you're essentially paying 50 dollars for a candle. The options for jars were limited, you're only allowed to use two of the scents and you have to pay for drinks. Obviously as a newer small business, I understand prices being higher but even just throwing in a free glass of wine or at the least having complimentary snacks available to make it feel like more of an experience. I am very happy with the candles we made and the ambience was lovely, but to pay 100 dollars just to walk in the door and then have no food and have to buy drinks seems a little silly to me. read more

The good thing about Wax + Wine is that you don't need any artistic abilities to create a masterpiece... all you need is your sense of smell and a bottle of wine. I knew I was going to fall in love with this place. Definitely making another trip here in the future. Had a reservation at 1:30pm for two. I was greeted at the entrance by a gentleman who I assume is the owner. He was very kind and showed me to my seat while I waited for my friend to arrive. The entire staff was hospitable and friendly. Everyone I came in contact with was awesome. The first thing you're asked to do is write your name, email and the date on a clipboard and bring the clipboard to the scent cellar. This is where the magic happens. There's a section on the paper on the clipboard where you can jot down notes of the scents you paired and liked. The shelves are packed with a variety of scents to choose from. They are sorted out by categories, including fruity, earthy, seasonal, sweet, etc. Our instructor said she feels like she's walking into someone's apartment when she walks into the scent cellar. I completely agree. It was so therapeutic. I came here with the intention of making one candle, however, I asked if I could pay the difference and make two because I loved the experience so much. I picked out 4 scents; two for each candle. I went with Wassail & Citrus Basil and Cinnamon & Oakmoss. Once we got back to our seats, (and poured more wine) we started the candle making process. You mix the oils into a little shot glass, and once you're happy with the scent, the oils get mixed into a mug of hot wax. You pour the hot wax into a container with a wick. That's basically the process! It's super simple and there's no room for error because they walk you through how to do this. Your creation goes inside a freezer and you sip away while you wait. I wish I would've came here sooner. This is such a wonderful concept, and I will be telling my friends and family about it. The staff and the ambiance are absolutely amazing. A group of three of us came here after making a reservation to make candles. I think you can also just walk-in to make candles. The inside and outside of the store is adorable. Inside, it looks like a restaurant, but everyone is sitting at tables and the bar drinking and making candles. It's great that it's BYOB. When you make a candle, they take you into the back to their scent cellar and you can choose two scents out of around 75 to mix to make a candle. They provide everything you need and the process is super easy. The resulting candle is also nice after I burned it. We booked the 7pm slot and I do suggest you guys to come earlier to find a parking. We were seated at their private room-usually you pay extra, but there were still a lot of customers when we walked in so they put us in that awesome room (THANK YOU JESUS) because that added to the intimacy experience. We were welcomed by our instructor Taylor (awesome, awesome lady, no complaints whatsoever) and she patiently explained to us the whole shebang. Basically: 1. Pick your scents (2 sets) 2. Mix your scents to your liking 3. Name your scents 4. Mix it with wax and pour into the jar Note: do not light it up until 24 hrs later The whole experience usually should take about 1.5 hr but last night they were so busy that it took longer, which was fine and we were the last customer. Her birthday ended up being Easter so about 3 weeks ahead of our reservation, a Wax+ Wine representative emailed me to let me know that there was a glitch in the system and that they are not open for Easter. To make up for the inconvenience, Wax + Wine not only rescheduled our date, but also gave us 2 candles each for the price of 1. I was very impressed by how polite the Wax + Wine representative was and how nicely they handled the mistake. My friend and I arrived for our session at 5 pm on a Friday and were seated right away. We were walked through the candle making process step by step and were very well attended to. As soon as we sat down, our wine was poured and we were given a few minutes to relax before we were taken back to the scent cellar. There were many scents in the scent cellar and I am sure you will be able to find your perfect scent, regardless of what scents you typically like. Once we picked our scents, we went back to the main area and Wax + Wine employees brought us our scents to mix together and create candles with. Overall, I loved my experience! I would highly recommend this activity to everyone. It is a bit on the pricier side, but it is perfect as a birthday or bachelorette activity. For those of you who left your wine at home like me, there is a Fine Wine and Good Spirits on 11th and Chestnut that is a 9 minute walk from Wax + Wine. Attended one of Wax + Wine's virtual events in partnership with Penn GAPSA. Prior to the event, we got to pick out two scents to mix in to our candle and the color of the candle holder, which was a nice way to customize our experience. I wasn't in Philly for the actual event, but Wax + Wine sent me all of the materials (super well packaged which included most everything we needed...down to the wet nap to clean up afterwards!) ahead of time. They were super supportive and had excellent communication with me as I made sure I had everything set up for the event (including kindly and patiently answering all of my questions about shipping!). The event itself was also super fun! It was so interesting to learn to make the candles (no experience required, which was amazing). Jordan was such a great host! He peppered in a ton of trivia and kept us super engaged in the 45 minute session. I also loved that he had an assistant (shoutout to Ricky!) who answered questions in the chat to make sure nobody was lost. First and foremost, everyone was wearing masks and was compliant with COVID restrictions. They never had more than one party in the smaller back room to pick scents. I really appreciated that they were taking guidelines seriously. The overall experience was so much fun! The atmosphere was great! Our instructor (whose name I'm forgetting ‍ she had a floral headband on and really precise eyeliner!) and the new person she was training were very personable and funny. I would recommend this for a girls night out, a date night, maybe even something to do for Mother's Day since it's coming up. You write down what you like and then narrow it down from there....Smelling all the different scents was fun, and there is a large selection to choose from. We then mixed our scents and poured our wax, the staff went above and beyond helping us with each step and helping us with our scent ratios. I greatly appreciated the help from the staff, as I am often sensitive to smell and can get overwhelmed when there are multiple scents flowing through a room. We then socialized with wine and cheese while we waited for our candle wax to set. Before leaving, the staff packed up our candles, and reviewed some tips with how to light and get the most out of our candles. The candles were packed nicely into individual boxes and then bagged up super cute. Pricing seems pretty reasonable, it's BYOB, and a really fun activity.
