I've been to this dessert bar twice now, once for my birthday and once for my son's birthday. The first time, it was just my husband and me. We sat at the bar and had a slice of cake, a chocolate shake, and a cocktail. It was such a great experience. Everything tasted amazing, and the cocktail was adorable. It even had Curious George's face on it, which made it feel extra fun and thoughtful. The second visit was for my son's birthday. The desserts were still absolutely delicious. The churro cake was insane in the best way. They truly know how to do desserts. My only downside the second time was the table. They have a thick, waxy film on them that feels dirty and sticky underneath. It honestly feels like they need to be scraped down and re finished because touching them is uncomfortable. It takes away a bit from what is otherwise such a great experience. The staff has always been friendly, and the cakes and desserts are consistently amazing. Because of the table issue, I'm giving 3 stars, but I'd happily give five if that detail was improved. read more

As a first time guest, the experience was ok. I am big on desserts and this spot was ok, but it just didn't have that WOW factor for me. I had a Hot Chocolate with Mint that was low lukewarm and the Red Velvet Cake. The cake would have been better if it was served warm or even room temperature. It was cold, probably because they are in a cooler. It just gave it that "Store Bought" taste.. The atmosphere was good and pleasant. The waiter was pleasant and knowledgeable. The service was great. If it's your first visit, make sure you look at all the cakes in the display case before being seated. Otherwise you'll have to get up later to see the options available to order. I did not know this the first time I visited. However, now I know what to expect. Servers were efficient, friendly and accommodating. We came in after a long, difficult day and needed a treat. Kaminsky's serves it! We had coffee drinks (the server checked for us first to make sure the coffee was not dark or French toast, which we avoid), key lime pie (luscious), and a warm fudge-y brownie (my second favorite ever, after Companion Bakeshop in Santa Cruz) with vanilla bean ice cream. Great dessert establishment that serves a variety of cakes, coffees, and a limited selection of icecream. They are more known for their cake selection and I highly recommend their NY Cheese cake and carrot cake. The cream cheese icing on the carrot cake isn't too overwhelming and the portion size is huge. My favorite dessert here though is the cobbler. Flavors change pending season but typically they have the peach and mixed berry cobbler. I think the peach is better and getting a scoop of vanilla icecream on top really gets different flavors going while getting some hot/cold all in one bite. I wish they had more icecream flavors to choose from. Only having vanilla really limits options, so when you order the strawberry milkshake, it's not real strawberry but the syrup blended into vanilla icecream. Seating can be limited despite having 3 rooms to cater to customers, especially on the weekends. They are open late till 1am on Friday and Saturday which gives flexibility to grab dessert post late dinner. Parking is terrible; street parking only. Overall, staff have always been kind and helpful. Great place to swing by to grab some desserts and socialize. read more

I just came to place a to-go order. It was a smooth and easy process. It only took less than 5 minutes for them to have my order ready. I ordered one slice of chocolate cream cheese cake and it cost $8 for the slice. I thought the cake was a good consistency, but the icing was not as good as I was expecting and I am normally a big fan of cream cheese. My bestie recommended this place. I ordered a dessert drink called the tiramisu. It was made really quickly and tasted delicious. Just the right amount of alcohol for me. I also ordered the bourbon pecan pie. I added a scoop of ice cream to it, it was served to me as if it had just come out of the oven. Love love love! There are so many pecans on top and the consistency of the pie sauce is a bit of a fall apart. No complaints for me, I loved it. I also ordered a limoncello blueberry mule. To me it was very similar to a Paloma in taste and my favorite of the two drinks I ordered. It had ginger beer as a base. This is my sweetie's favorite dessert spot, so we go here a few times a year. Maybe except for when it first opens for the day (we actually have been there at that time) this spot is always, always packed. That's sorta good for ambience, but bad for if you just wanna chill (like on a recent Tuesday night). Of the regular cakes, more often than not we get the Red Velvet Cake, but I recently got the Hummingbird, which is a new favorite. The gluten free Poppy Seed cake is also excellent. The trifecta for me is; downtown, quality coffee/espresso, and sweets. And then, the icing on the cake (pun intended) is when it's somewhere out of town. Now this is only just over a hour away from me, but just far enough that I don't visit Columbia on a regular basis (though I know I should). But when I do visit, Kaminsky's is always a must stop location. Right on Gervais Street, the sign doesn't pop out but that's to avoid redundancy. As you walk by and glance in the windows, you see a lit display case filled with cakes and pies. I feel a word of caution is needed, as you may stop suddenly. A drink or bag in your hand may meet the sidewalk due to the jolt. There is nothing subtle about the view. I always do an Americano because 1) they are delicious here! and 2) it counters the sweetness of the massive slice of cake I will inevitably order. Though they are all good, I will mention the one I last enjoyed...the banana pudding cake. Three fluffy, moist layers of cake with the pudding and wafers between. It truly is Memaw's nanner pudding in a cake form. I love the ambiance created by the original brick and local art and the team members are always friendly. I always leave here with a smile on my face and no room in my belly. Hmm, I need to make the drive to Columbia real soon. read more

Kaminsky's used to be my go to place for desserts but the last few times the quality has been subpar. I will probably not go back after today or recommend them to others. The servers here are wonderful and very attentive. One star is docked because the cakes can be very inconsistent. Some days they are moist and flavorful and others they are dry and crumbly. Purchased two desserts from Kaminsky's to go after dinner. The inside was an ok atmosphere, decorated with a kind of grandma esthetic, but they had plenty of tasty looking dessert options. The place was very busy and I was excited to dig in to some delicious looking treats. The service was efficient enough, but the desserts were just ok. $5 for two cookies that were a bit undercooked. (Tasted like the standard back of the chocolate chip packaging recipe). I also purchased the pecan pie which was solid but nothing special. I was given a very small slice for what would run me $15 for the pie slice and two cookies. The pie was completely cold and no one gave me an option to have it warmed for my to go order. I'm staying right next door so having them warm it up for me would have been ideal. Especially when they're making you pay for to go packaging. All in all underwhelming experience. read more

The place is bustling, especially in the evening hours so I'd recommend making reservations if you want to actually get a table or just be ready to wait. The desserts are all made in house and are great! Whether you want pie, cake, cookies or cheesecake, they always have options including some with seasonal fruit. They also a drinks bar and full coffee bar. If you want a latte or a martini to go with your dessert, they've got you covered. The wait staff and bartenders are super amiable and consistent.
