Before I review the play, let me say that the theater is beyond words. A HUGE digital screen in the background allows for scenery changes "on-the-fly". The theater itself is intimate but spacious, allowing for comfortable seating for the audience. The ambience of the theater is top notch...what I have seen with other, much larger venues but lack the intimacy of the Midland Community Theatre. Now, with respects to "White Christmas", but can apply to every play I have seen since (four total), I can say that the quality of the production is very high. For a community theater, I often have lower expectations, as they typically are not funded well and have to "Be Creative" with props and generally have local talent without formal training. For the Midland Community Theatre, I was blown away. The entire production exceeded all of my expectations. It was easy to forget that I was in a smaller town "Community Theater" and was instead in a much larger commercial theater. The talent was top tier, and you could tell that everyone was playing "from the heart" and not just "phoning in the performance". The performances are both memorable and heartwarming...I honestly felt like I was there, with them, watching life unfold. It is with great pleasure that I rate the Midland Community Theatre with five stars. For those who live in the community, you are blessed to have such an amazing community theater to call your own. And, while I come to Midland to spend time with my daughter, I cherish our time seeing the latest production of the Midland Community Theatre!

Very difficult to even give one star. Don't ever buy a membership. You'll rarely get the shows or…read moreseats you want. Then they'll put a cap on the number of tickets you can use at once. I essentially pissed away my money this year by buying a membership. I requested to use 8 of the tickets I haven't been able to use this year and received a call saying I could only use 6 and they would need more money in order to reserve the 8, wth? I asked when would I be able to use the remaining that haven't been used and she said, "You won't." Gotta love the better than thou attitude in Midland. I'll stick to The Permian Playhouse.

We remembered it as a fun time with friends to throw popcorn and watch the show - to "boo" when the villain came out and cheer when the heroine arrived. Some of the humor was a little off color but mostly it was good adult fun. We were back in town so our Midland friends bought tickets for our group of 12 (She stayed up until midnight when the tickets went on sale because they can be hard to get for big groups). We got tickets on the floor (also called the house section). Welcome to a new era! The humor and jokes were absolutely vulgar. And they weren't funny. The first part of the night includes a combination video and on stage play with a clever story line. Overall this part was good fun but the jokes were disgusting. The videos before intermission included a woman flashing the audience. The Olio is the next part of the evening and includes dancers and singers and a few clever variety acts. We loved the old woman playing When The Saints Go Marching In. But again - the jokes were all sexually explicit and crude. And then the final act is the Mule Train which we all loved. This type of clever humor was what we hoped for the whole evening. Overall - We were disappointed in the vulgarity of the evening in contrast to the old SM. Our friends had planned to bring their adult family members in a few weeks but decided not to go and will try to sell their tickets. I would not want to sit next to my mother or children and watch this!! I also recognize that we may not be their target audience. We considered leaving at intermission but kept hoping it would get less offensive. But it didn't. What we did love were the people - all of the workers (who I think are mostly volunteers) were fun , helpful and very nice. We loved throwing popcorn. And the singalongs (who doesn't love singing Deep in the Heart of Texas). Here are some suggestions if you choose to go - Popcorn - This is the number one activity of the evening. Popcorn bags are one token. Each token is $5. Some people buy a bag of popcorn each. These are the people who don't want to throw popcorn or have popcorn thrown at them. The majority of the people buy LOTS of popcorn. We bought 4 bags of popcorn and that lasted through the first intermission. We bought many more throughout the evening. We had a fun popcorn war with the people behind us. At the end of the night they only sell large bags which are 4 tokens ($20). Some people would dump an entire bag on one person. We spent about $200 on popcorn. I would guess there was about 4" of popcorn in the floor at the end of the night. Tickets - If you can't get tickets on the house level or the pit I would say don't bother. You can't throw popcorn in the balcony and that's the best part of the evening. To buy the tickets in larger numbers you might need to be ready to buy them immediately when they go on sale. Clothing and Popcorn - You will come home with popcorn in your hair and pockets and just about everywhere! The oil from the popcorn sticks to your skin and hair. I wore tennis shoes and was glad. Might be hard to walk in the popcorn in sandals. Concessions - They serve beer, a few mixed drinks, margaritas (tasted like sugar water) and sangria (which was pretty good). The beer is one token and the mixed drinks were two tokens. You can also pay a token for a souvenir cup with a lid (highly suggest). Water cups are free. There is no food except for popcorn. Yucca Theater - Charming old theater but with that brings poor air conditioning (it was warm!) and congested areas around the bar and entry area. But the restrooms were pretty nice for an old theater.

Throwing popcorn can get your jewelry loose and clothes dirty, so go very casual and get ready for popcorn everywhere. This is a big fundraiser for the Midland Community Theatre, and an absolute must if you are going to Midland in the summer. Just be aware that Summer Mummers is geared toward adults, and in addition to being messy it is rowdy & bawdy, and messy. I wouldn't take the kids or grandma to see Summer Mummers.

And I thought I couldn't be anymore impressed after seeing the smaller version of Stonehenge. I went here to see top notch author Christopher Moore speak at their annual Shakespeare Festival. I was pleasantly surprised at this great little facility. It's really charming. The were selling merch for a buck an item. I have a t-shirt AND a mug! If you get a chance to see something there, you should. It's a really great place.
