When I arrived here, the level of care I received was excellent and the price was super affordable. My neck pain went away after getting treatment here. Fast forward to 2026, I was in need of therapy for my neck again. It is definitely something with long flights and using pillows that I am not used to. Anyways, I should have called for a reservation because it is so busy here. I wasn't able to get the therapy this time, but I wanted to leave this long overdue review. Can't speak highly enough of Patricia! I've been there 3 times now and each time after the session I would walk out pain free! I used to be scared to acupuncture coz no one likes to have multiple needles inserted into the body right? But after feeling the immediate positive effects of it, I'm a believer, and I think the 5 minutes of discomfort is extremely worth it for the few or multiple pain-free days I get out of it! That's my main motivation to keep coming back. If you tried PT, massage and all that and nothing seems working, give acupuncture a try. To me, effects of a massage could only provide maybe half a day of pain relief and of course the relaxation, and I'm spending $80 which gets expensive. Acupuncture is more effective and more affordable, so the choice is obvious for me. It also helps a lot that Patricia is caring, understanding, knowledgeable, skillful, honest, calm and reassuring, everything you want in a good acupuncturist. She gave me a consultation and took my pulse every time before we would go upstairs for the acupuncture session. Usually I go there for my lower back pain, but if she notices something else wrong, or if I bring something else up, then she would put the needles in the appropriate pressure points to treat that as well. I would say, out of all the acupuncturists I've had, including some in Hong Kong china, she's the most precise in terms of where to put the needles, because almost every needle going in I would feel some numbing sensation. Sometimes when it's intense, my muscle would twitch. That's a good thing because it means it's the right spot!!! Depending on your condition and the area of problem, and also depending on how hard the acupuncturist wants it to go lol, each needle would feel differently, so I can only imagine acupuncture feels different for every single person as well. But in general feeling the nerve firing up, numbness or tingling is considered normal. (The sharps of the needle is nothing compared to the sensation once the needle is in. The numbness I described is after the needle is already inside.) After having the needles in, I was able to have at least 30 mins to lie down on my stomach to rest (with needles on my back). Sometimes I would doze off because it's actually very relaxing. She would then come in to take them out and massage the spots a bit to get the blood flowing. The environment is relaxing with meditative music playing upstairs. The room is also shared with other patients, with 2 massage beds and 2 chairs spaced apart. Payment is on a sliding scale from $30-55. They don't take insurance. I hope they're doing ok with this payment method to keep the place running! I've come to Kama'aina Acupuncture twice now, and I love it! As someone who is afraid of needles, I was very scared of getting acupuncture done. However, I worked with both Renata and Kyoko and both of them are very gentle when placing the needles knowing that I was afraid. They are also very kind and understanding. I was able to relax during my hour long treatment and left feeling much better than when I walked in. They offer cupping as well which helped me immensely. As far as their office goes, they are very responsive and got back to me immediately if they were unable to come to the phone when I called. Went there yesterday with back spasms and a tender left shoulder, after cupping then came the acupuncture treatment. My session lasted about an hour. Upon leaving I felt a little relief but was told it may take a few days to realize the full effects. By evening time I was about 90% pain free and able to move pretty well, I've been here several times for different ailments but this is by far the best results. I'm scheduled for some PT but was in too much pain as this wasn't scheduled till mid January. I will definitely be going back to see if we can get the last 10%. read more

Kama'aina Acupuncture has been my go to place for acupunctures for years. Every acupuncturist is great there but I especially like to get treatments by Patricia. She can probably just feel what my body needs as I don't have to tell her much! It depends on your issues and areas, but in my case, it usually starts with cuppings, then needles at the same time and/or afterwards, and finishing with light massages. But it's individually customized, so could be different for everyone. The place is a community style, so you could be in a large room with another person or two. At the time, I really did a number on my back after surfing Queens Break for about 3 hours. Upon walking in for my appointment, Licensed Acupuncturist Patricia Hu did a thorough intake and eval and then immediately provided treatment. I've have acupuncture before however she really seemed to reach nodules and points deeper into the muscles than I've ever felt before. While certainly a bit more intense than I was previously used it, it was oh so worth it. She also supplements the needles with cupping and a sports massage. I was met with such professionalism and care for my treatment. The atmosphere was calming and although you are in an open room with several others receiving their treatment it was respectful and peaceful. I use to come here all the time and mostly had a great experience but a while ago upon my last visit I had a woman and she didn't seem to show mercy when I urged her not to apply needles on the bottom of my foot, although that visit she didn't put any, she told me next time that's where she'll focus on. I'm very sensitive with the bottom of my foot and i understand it is a sensitive spot but needles there has never really helped with my feet problems in the past, it helps more above my foot. This place is excellent. I'm sure a lot of people come here because it's affordable and works on a sliding scale, where we can choose how much we pay ($20-45 range per treatment). But of course, the skills of the acupuncturists are as important as anything, and these practitioners are highly knowledgeable and competent. So far, I've been treated by Joe and by Patricia. Their individual approaches are a little different, and after receiving treatments by both, I came out of the sessions feeling better. Something that I really appreciate is the time they take to ask for and listen to information about my life circumstances, which they take into consideration when assessing how best to approach treatments. I feel that they have a holistic view of health and wellness; Joe and Patricia both have extensive experience of Chinese herbal medicine. When they offer suggestions, they also take into account various lifestyle factors and emotional health. Their sense of compassion comes across very clearly, to me. For those who worry about pain during treatments, I would say that I barely feel the needles enter my body, and the feeling itself is not unpleasant. The needles are extremely thin, not anything like the kind you'd use for sewing. Also, acupuncturists use plastic tubes to guide the entries of the needles, so each application takes a fraction of a second in which they tap the needle into the skin. (I believe this is generally the practice these days, because it was the same when I received acupuncture in Japan, where I lived for 21 years.) To me, it doesn't hurt at all. I feel less sensation from it than being pinched by someone's fingernails. Certainly, it's nothing like receiving an injection or giving blood. Acupuncture needles are so much thinner, and the time of entry so much quicker, that they are nothing like being pierced at a clinic or doctor's office. When I go to acupuncture, I lie in a recliner or on a massage table as they tap the needles into me, and then I sleep for a half hour or so. It's usually my most relaxing time of the week. Oftentimes, with Chinese (and other non-Western) medicine, it can be hard to quantify results, or to clearly define them. For example, if pain goes away after a treatment, many skeptics might wonder if the acupuncture was the cause, or if it had more to do with the mindset of the patient. In other words, do we feel better afterwards simply because we believe we do? Is there a sort of placebo effect taking place? I understand that perspective. In my experience with Kama'aina Acupuncture, I can recount two specific instances of tangible results. This may be more information than the reader wants, but one of my issues being treated has been acid reflux. Had it for the first time recently. Although it still recurs once in a while, my condition has been much better since I started my sessions at Kama'aina. I mean this along the lines of physical symptoms as well as feelings of discomfort (which can always be physical and/or psychological). In my situation, I would say that the physical symptoms noticeably lessened. The other example was Joe's treatment for one of my eyes. Over the last few years, every once in a while, capillaries in the whites of one of my eyes burst, and it becomes blood red. It doesn't hurt at all, and it doesn't affect my vision, but it can look pretty terrible. Usually takes a few weeks to clear up. After a session with Joe, most of the red was gone after two days. I was astonished. I'd never seen it disappear so quickly. I don't have evidence that it was because of Joe's treatment--I suppose acupuncture is like that, you don't have hard evidence of its effects--but I certainly don't think it was coincidental, and I credit his skills with the needles for my eye's return to quick normalcy. All in all, I'd say that Kama'aina Acupuncture has skilled practitioners who are honest and compassionate. The community aspect of it, where several people are treated in the same space, is comfortable for me because of the general atmosphere. It's a nice place. read more

I'm all sorts of broken and to be honest massages don't really work out for me and needed something more skin deep than a deep tissue massage. So I have decided to try out here, at the time I was going through a heartbreak and I asked if they had a pressure point for a broken heart and they said there is one and it located on the knuckle of your toe?!?!? That was interesting and to be honest it was the only needle that hurts the most lol. When they stick the needles in you, it feels like when you have a led pencil and you stick it in your skin pretending like its a shot. My overall experience with Kama'aina Acupuncture is that they were very professional, friendly, and have very affordable prices! They give a pay range of how much you want to pay like $30-$50. I appreciate the response from Patricia, which definitely warrants the extra star. However, I would be remiss if I did not stand up for myself and dispute her recollection of our final sessions together. I absolutely admit that I had quite lofty expectations when we first started in 2017 that could definitely be characterized as unrealistic. I had been dealing with debilitating gastric issues for which I sought treatment through a number of specialists. I decided to go the holistic route and ended up going back to Kamaaina; I previously had a long therapeutic relationship with Ryoko, who had left to start her own practice. Oddly enough, as much pressure as I put on acupuncture at the time to be the ultimate solution to my issues, Patricia was unflappable and amazing as she saw me twice a week for weeks and weeks straight. This is what is so baffling to me now to hear her say that her treatment of me had changed recently because of "unrealistic expectations." As far as the treatment in the last two years is concerned, my requests were routine and almost boring: acupuncture and cupping. While I had the occasional complaint of a stiff neck or sore legs, I see these as par for the course and nowhere near "unrealistic," as she stated. So, Patricia, what is the real reason you decided to ignore the messages for appointments on your answering machine and for the way you treated me despite all of the business I tried to give you? No one should have to feel as uncomfortable as I did in the last handful of sessions we had together, nor be put into the mental limbo you put me in as a long-standing patient and customer. read more

After taking two sick leave days for some crazy lower back pain that radiates up and down my back and legs (sciatica?), I decided to try acupuncture instead of continuing my pain meds and stretching. As always, Brandon greeted me with his ever so calm nature--I swear, just his presence makes me super relaxed and assured. Unlike other medical professions, I appreciate how he creates a space in time to sit with each patient and genuinely listen. He never treats me the same--he will listen and pin point (no pun intended) the root of the problem and get right to it. What I do find unusual is how he puts all his clients in one room, yet, we are all in our own world: a testament to how he makes it such a comfortable experience for us all. I have been going to Kamaāina Acupuncture for over 6 years now. They have helped me manage various issues like digestive and joint problems. Love that they are sliding scale and they are so committed to helping the community. What really solidified their excellence for me was that when I brought my mom in, who was suffering from trigeminal neuralgia (also referred to as the "suicide disease" due to the severity and lack of treatments of the condition), they CURED her of it. Started acupuncture with Patricia about a year ago and it was life changing. I had had acupuncture before but I believe she is the only one who knew how to administer it correctly. It was the most pain I ever felt and I was in tears while the needles were in me--BUT--it made a huge difference in reducing the pain in my hip and back. The way I understand it is that the needles have to stimulate healing and if it's not hitting the correct meridians it will not heal the correct area. Usually the area for healing is hurting so the hurting parts will b stimulated. I had never felt any pain in any other acupuncture but I also never felt this kind of healing. I think the criticisms of Patricia are unwarranted. She is deeply committed to healing people and this clinic is one of the most reasonably priced places so everyone can try it. She is passionate about her craft and doesn't give u mindless nodding but listens very carefully to your description of ur pain and addresses those exact issues. I have had sweet acupuncturists who charged me twice as much and was smiley but did nothing for my body and claimed I needed more worthless sessions. Patricia never pushes treatment and she charges less than any other place for quicker results. She is a gifted practitioner following the true acupuncturist methods and thinks of herself as a "vessel" of healing and not the healer. She is "monk-like" and humble so she is not a Chatty Cathy and allows u the opportunity to judge her skills and not her demeanor. Before you judge her please try other acupuncturist from China, they r just like her. They r "down-to-business", let's get u healed! They r not "friendly" in the American way. (Try going to any Chinese restaurant or Chinatown store) this might not b the kind of service for u. This is not an American business as it is a 2000 year old healing hale. The motive is different and I hope those critical of Patricia will use other American style businesses who provide acupuncture, whose first priority is to make money. Now I know why dis place is rated 5 stars! Got poked in the wrong place when doing my PRP shots into my right knee causing intense pain in da ligament behind my knee! With pain level being a 10, I needed immediate relief so I could catch da big south swell hitting in 2 days. After Bob applied bout 6 painless needles into my knee n left it there for 15 minutes n removed them n applied a muscle pulsating machine in dat area for another 15 minutes, my treatment was done! From pain level at 10 n leaving w a pain level at 9, I thought is dis gonna work? Went home n used a warm then cold compress for 2 hours and pain level dropped to a 5. By 11:00 (11 hrs later) pain level was down to 2. Next day used warm cold compress again thru out da day n by end of 2nd day pain was down to 1. Next day pain completely GONE! Sprained a muscle in back a few weeks ago then a few days ago sprained a muscle in my neck. Hating how muscle relaxers made me drowsy I wanted to take a different route I wanted to try acupuncture. I've been hearing about this place for a long time and finally made an appointment. I have never had acupuncture before but I have been really wanting to. I'm SO GLAD I did!! My appt was at 9 and Patricia was there to greet me. I filled out the paperwork and she did a hand to wrist consult. I mean the things she could tell by just that was astounding. I instantly felt comfortable and my nerves went away. I was shown to the treatment room and got to choose a chair facing the window to let all the sunlight hit me. She worked quickly and smoothly with her insertion of the needles. A few ones I couldn't feel at all, a few made me twitch upon entry and a few felt like pushing on a bruise but nothing was painful. Any slight discomfort went away within seconds and I was encouraged to not open my eyes and attempt to relax. I don't relax haha. But I did it! I sat through the entire session with my eyes closed and concentrating on my new healing journey. She removed the needles as quickly and smoothly as when she placed them and when I got up to leave I was astounded that my pain and soreness from severe TMJ was already better.
