Being treated as less than human is a demeaning feeling, made worse by watching older Haitian men and women siding with the staff and making excuses for the blatant lack of professionalism. I've known of Papa Karl/Carl since 2012. As a Haitian, I feel a duty to support our businesses, but this establishment's reputation for hostility and absurd wait times is unfortunately well-earned. After avoiding the "plague" of this place for years, I gave them another chance this month. On 1/12/26, the staff actually insulted my aunt for leaving a $2 tip. On 1/17/26, I returned at 8:00 PM and waited over an hour. When I asked for a simple ETA because I had to be in Queens, the employee dismissed me entirely and started serving the person behind me. Worst of all, other customers began co-signing this behavior, telling me they had been waiting too and making excuses for the delay. I had to address a man behind me to remind him that where I spend my money is 100% within my control. When they finally tried to hand me the food after I demanded a refund, the employee was smiling as if she hadn't just dehumanized me. I refused the food and took my money. Being Haitian, and recently spending the last year in Brooklyn, I have been on the hunt for the best Haitian restaurant. This place is making me proud. The prices are affordable, the location is open til MIDNIGHT?!?! And if you aren't Haitian, im feel sowwi for you behbeee! Very good tasting Haitian food. Most of the hot food is visible via the hot table. All food is take out. You can definitely get your money's worth. Food sizes are small and large. If you don't speak English get help from another customer while you're ordering and there will definitely be other people in the store because there's always a line that's the worst part about being in the store. They upgraded everything so now they have AC so at least you're not waiting in the heat, but the food is well worth the wait. Glad you guys are FINALLY back open. Not completely sure why the name on the outside says "Carls" but maybe it was a mixup. Anyway they've fully renovated but the inside is even more cramped than usual. If you're not going with a Haitian speaker good luck in getting serviced. Food is worth a drive and nothing is too oily and everything was perfectly seasoned. There's is zero order in this place that not only makes the business suffer but causes mayhem amongst patrons. The establishment itself is a one to no star type of joint but the food is five. Overall give it a try but do give yourself at minimum 1-2hrs to order and receive your order. read more

Food is amazing 10/10, and highly affordable. However if you don't speak Creole you prolly should come here with someone who does! I've never had an experience where I been in and out in less than 30mins (even just for a patty), and if you getting fritay you should be thankful if you only gotta wait a hour. I have only had Haitian food one other time so don't have much to compare it to but the food was good; a little oily but flavorful. I didn't care for rice and only wanted try ti a medley of the meats but apparently could not accomodate any variation to what they say you must get. I may return to give it one more chance but am relunctant to go alone since the server had an attitude and seemed like she didn't want to deal with us much, even though we had our Haitian friend put in our order. The ladies behind the counter seems to work at their own pace and they don't seem to care how the line is flowing. The food has always been good, but the customer service has always needed improvement. I think they have come a long way, but I still walk in on eggshells not knowing what to expect on any given day. There are two entrances/exits - one for the bakery and the other for the restaurant. A great move to avoid any confusion with the lines. There should be a ticket system established to prevent customers from skipping and add order to the often chaotic environment. If you're not vocal, you are guaranteed to wait awhile for service. I am not a fan of the patties at all. I have not yet tried their other baked goods, but hope to in the future. I feel compelled to support my own. Kal's has been in the community for years and just needs to work on their staff's people skills. I wonder if non-Haitians frequent this establishment. It's been many times where the some workers not all argue with customers and among each other.
