Our two children were in Kallpachay After School last year at El Rincon in Culver City and now are in the Spanish Immersion Virtual Camp. I am really impressed with the Virtual Camp. The teachers are excellent, and the curriculum is top notch. As an educator myself, I know how hard it is to make it all work esp with online teaching. The camp is super packed with activities for the children to do, full Spanish immersion and a well thought out curriculum flow. Really impressed with the quality of the curriculum and teachers are super positive. Native speakers and great with kids. Kids love it. I also speak Spanish but I often forget to speak to them in Spanish. When they are in Kallpachay it reminds me to keep speaking with them in Spanish and then they are less resistant to it. I love this place! No child wants to be in summer camp especially when it comes to learning a new language or maybe just learning Spanish the right way. Even though my nephews said they didn't want go every morning, at the end of the camp, they said they'd be back next summer! HA! So, mom's out there, get those babies out of the house and into Spanish camp, they'll definitely thank you when they understand how valuable it is. We recently enrolled our two children in the program and have had a wonderful experience. We attend Monterey Hills Elementary (which has a Spanish immersion class) and we were excited to find this program as a means to enhance that opportunity. Both of our children have made great progress and their language recognition has grown rapidly. My child loved the summer camp program and had a lot of fun. I was impressed by the thoroughness of the program and the cohesive curriculum. The teachers presented different themes and taught the associated vocabulary, and they did singing and dancing and artwork with the kids, as well as other fun activities, all of which emphasized the vocabulary pertaining to the themes. I also appreciated that the program focused on the culture of certain Spanish-speaking countries. My daughter learned geography and cultural references. My daughter could understand Spanish pretty well before the program, but she learned a lot of vocabulary and many expressions during the program and gained much more confidence in speaking. The environment was friendly and upbeat, and my child and the other kids made a lot of friends. I highly recommend this summer program. read more

Just finished our first week of Spanish immersion camp at the Agoura hills location and it was great! My almost 5 year old can be shy and resistant at school drop offs, but the week ended with him talking about all the different things that happen here with his friends! He is having a lot of fun and I can see the language gears turning in his head because he keeps asking how to say things in Spanish. Miriam is very accommodating and responsive, and Instructors Annabelle and Cesar are very sweet, patient and engaging, and they don't make me feel like an idiot with my attempts to converse with them with my horrible Spanish. They have a great motto and they stand by it: "it's ok to not know; it's not ok to not try." Warning, my son will probably ask, "como se dice 'booger'" before the season is over. read more

I love Kallpachay. I have a home group with 4 girls and 1 boy (all first graders) learning Spanish. The teachers that this organization has are top notch and really know how to teach all different levels. They show up on time and are organized and have a mix of activities for the kids to do all in Spanish. They also now teach an afterschool program at our elementary school, so my daughter gets it twice a week. It's great. read more

This is my 6 year old daughter's second summer with Kallpachay. I was a little concerned that because of the school location, she would feel like she's in class all year. This summer I asked her if she wanted to go to a traditional summer camp with a lake, camp songs, etc., but she wanted to go back to Kallpachay. She really loves it. I can see that she is proud of herself when she is saying things in Spanish and I am beyond thrilled to watch her speaking Spanish. I see what they are learning and I want to go too!!! I'm not sure which Spanish Immersion camp the 5 star review people attended, but it certainly wasn't the camp that my son attended this summer. I'm giving Kallpachay 1 star, and that is being GENEROUS. If you want to spend almost 100$ a day for the equivalent of a daycare where Spanish is spoken "at" your child, then this is the camp for you. The women running this camp may have good intentions (and lofty ambitions)--but the experience that your child will receive is NO WHERE CLOSE to what they are selling you when you attend the Open House. I signed my 6.5 year old son up for a 2 week run. He is a lover of learning and enjoys going to school. Between what my son has told me, and my own personal observations and insights, I have compiled a list. Please, take a look and then decide if this is where you want to send your child. 1) CONFUSION: It Begins with their website. I signed my son up for weeks 4 and 5, which, according to their gorgeous but very misleading website, were the weeks of camp dedicated to food/kitchen/meal preparation (week 4), and Art, with a focus on historic artists and their work (week 5). This is not what my child experienced. Instead, he was in a classroom making crafts about super heroes and detectives, neither of which subjects interest him even remotely. From the get-go we were sold something we did not receive. 2) DISORGANIZATION: From the time you drop your child at the outdoor play area the chaos begins. For whatever reason, all of the children line up under a stooping tree. The adult teachers are bending over so as to not be bonked by the branches, and the kids are lining up in a ridiculously cramped formation. It's laughable. Seriously? There is an entire playground with plenty of space and this is how they get the morning started? 3) CHAOS: How is it possible that in 2 weeks of dropping my son off and picking him up--my son's teacher never once introduced herself to me!!! Unbelievably, I STILL have no idea what she looks like! The class had only 7 students in it! On his last day of camp, he came home with a "Certificado de Reconocimiento". It's a certificate for being the child who spoke the most Spanish that day. When I inquired, my son replied..."Nah, they give that to everyone". Kallpachay sent our son home with a bogus certificate so that my husband and I would believe that our son actually learned something there and that it was money well spent. Again, laughable. The certificate did at least finally provide me with the name of his ever elusive teacher. 4) LACK of PHILOSOPHY: For all of the talk and enthusiasm on display at their Open House, Kallpachay provided no actual teaching or learning philosophy that I (or my son) could latch onto. The children were never sat in a circle and asked to introduce themselves to each other, therefore, no friendships were made. There was no evidence of any interactive learning process taking place. The teacher stood in front of the class speaking at the children in Spanish, not caring when they were lost and as a result, invariably bored. When I asked my son how it felt after the first week was over, he responded, "I feel like when I'm struggling in the deep end of the pool". How could a teacher of just 7 students not notice or care??? Furthermore, the ridiculously lengthly work sheets that the 6 year old children were expected to complete were developmentally inappropriate. On one occasion the teacher actually said to my son," ____, you're not speaking much Spanish". Forgive me if I'm wrong, but isn't that her job? I just paid this place $950 for 10 days, so I'm gonna go out here on a limb--if you see that one of your 7 students is not participating, get to the bottom of it and get him excited and involved-- that's your job! Let me add here that Kallpachay determined what level my son was at and assured me that intermediate was just perfect for him. To say the very least, the environment at Kallpachay is non-nurturing and unsupportive--and I dare say even neglectful. If the philosophy of "Throw them into the deep end and wait to see who sinks or swims" sounds like a positive learning environment to you, then by all means--Kallpachay is your dream come true. THE TAKEAWAY: Please note that I have never before written a review for any product, let alone a service on Yelp. This was such an unfortunate and costly mistake for our family. Hopefully some of you will read this before making the same mistake. Overall, in 2 weeks of camp my 6 year old learned 3 new phrases. "Baño, por favor", "Agua, por favor", and "Repite". I believe this speaks volumes for how ineffective and lackluster our experience was on the whole. In LA, you can easily find a Spanish speaking daycare at half the cost of Kallpachay. That said, save yourself the money and/or take the time to find a different immersion camp that will actually nurture in your child the love and joy of learning a foreign language. read more

This Spanish Immersion class is so wonderful. I have a 2nd grader who thought she would be bored especially because the class is 1-1/2 hours. But it is filled with arts and crafts and songs and activities (pinatas) and she learned soooo much Spanish. Her teacher was AMAZING. We love this program. read more

The counselors were attentive and so professional, and the daily program was nicely organized. I just wish we could have stayed longer. We've been with Kallpachay for the past 3 years and my son is now 6. I've loved how the program has changed with him to meet his changing needs. He loves it because it's a great mix of singing, games, cooking and crafts. Since it's all activity based, he doesn't even realize that he's learning a new language. The teachers are warm and kind and the staff to child ratio is great. Best of all, my son never thinks of it as "a class.' To him it's an afternoon or a camp experience that's all play-based. I feel lucky to have discovered this place and am so grateful that I can give the gift of a second language to my son. read more

Both of my sons (5 and 3 years old) love the school. I've been sending them to Kallpachay camps for a couple years now. My sons were very resistant to learning Spanish prior to joining the camp. Kallpachay is amazing!!!! My son has taken private and semi-private classes with them and my experience with their directors and teachers have all been great. Maria was our first teacher and set in motion for my son the love for the language! We sang great songs and laughed and did fun art projects. My daughter is four and was in a different Spanish immersion preschool for a year and a half, and while her receptive Spanish was great, she did NOT want to speak Spanish herself there. We came to this school and within two weeks, she was singing songs in Spanish, speaking in Spanish, correcting MY Spanish -- :) She runs up the walkway and can't wait to get to school. The program is great - The teachers, staff and principal are accessible and available and the children are doing fun things every day. My daughter is very excited to tell me all about her day as we drive home -- and we are so thrilled, we are staying on next year as well (yes, there is year round school here, not just camp). Worth a visit and look-see. Small, focused, fun, and great student/teacher ratio. They also cook and serve lunch, and my daughter (who is normally pretty picky about her food ) eats everything right up! She has grown two inches and another shoe size just since we started in March...there is a lot of love and happiness here, very upbeat, which is so great for the little ones. read more

My 4 year old, about to be 5, is attending Kallpachay summer camp in Studio City. The first day of camp she came back speaking about the Aztec and Mayan culture. My husband and I were impressed. She is enjoying her time and she reports participating in a variety of activities throughout the day.
