Fernando is the best language teacher I've ever had. I've been in his Spanish classes consistently for a few years now, and my Spanish-speaking friends are always amazed at how rapidly I've advanced. When I started, I could barely put together a full sentence. Now I'm having phone calls with my Colombian in-laws that meander from topic to topic. I can watch TV, listen to podcasts, and read news in Spanish and understand 80-100%. So I consider these classes to be one of the best investments I've made. Teaching a language is very difficult, but Fernando knows exactly what he's doing and has his pedagogy down perfectly. One thing I've noticed is that all of the students who've stuck with Fernando over the past few years are very advanced if not more or less fluent by now. That is quite an accomplishment for a class that meets only once a week for about an hour. The best part is that you will look forward to his classes because they're so much fun-- I always get a text from my partner who's in the other room asking, "what are you guys laughing about now?" :) Take Fernando! read more

I started taking Spanish classes with Fernando over two years ago, and it quickly became one of the best parts of my week. He is an exceptional teacher. I studied Spanish in college but hadn't used it for over a decade, and I've improved greatly since taking his classes. About a year ago, I went to Mexico with friends who were all amazed that I was able to help us navigate various scenarios through the language skills I've picked up from Fernando's classes. Fernando has tons of experience as a Spanish teacher and has a clear and understandable way of explaining even the most difficult concepts. The homework is always reasonable and on point, helping to cement comprehension of lessons reviewed in class. Most importantly, Fernando is funny and always makes class engaging and fun. The subjunctive tense, to me, is a very dry topic and can be incredibly painful to learn. However, Fernando makes even the subjunctive approachable. I have been taking Beginning Italian online with tutor Liz Manzini and am loving it! Is it difficult to learn a new language? Assolutamente!! Does Liz make it fun? Anche assolutamente si! I highly recommend her classes. She is so patient, never showing any displeasure with our abilities and she keeps the class flowing at a pace where you don't get bored. We study grammar, structure, etc., as well as practicing writing sentences and speaking them out loud. We also play games, read stories in Italian and listen to Italian music. She is very organized and thoughtful yet keeps things fresh by mixing it up. She is also very responsive to questions and requests outside of class time for instance to correct any homework that we might send her along the week. Working with the folks at Strommen has been a pleasure. They are helpful but not pushy. Take Spanish lessons with Karen from Strommen! My wife and I have been doing weekly Spanish sessions with her for a few months. Karen is super chill and friendly and puts you totally at ease as you practice with her. We obviously have a long way to go before fluency, but both of us find ourselves picking up more phrases and comprehending more Spanish that we casually read and hear in our daily lives. Like any learning, you get out what you put in. If we had more time I'd love to do twice a week vs once, but even once a week is enough to make progress. I thought it might be difficult for them to be engaged over zoom but Yvan is a wonderful tutor. I have been doing an immersive study in German with Jerilyn Phippeny...who teaches her classes purely in German...and she is a delightful instructor. She is also very adamant in her belief about the immersion technique, so much so that she may fight you Mortal Kombat-style should you oppose. Just kidding, she would commit no such violence (at least not that any survivors have admitted). I knew it would be overwhelming going into it, and I was correct, but it does quickly help you to understand the language rather quickly. The Duolingo assignments and other homework between meetings is also very helpful. Danny is an AMAZING teacher and its been half a year since we've started our Spanish lessons with him! As someone who already speaks Spanish, I've actually learned A LOT and have seen major improvements in my Spanish. Words and grammatical structures that I thought were right were actually not the best and Danny has helped me improve upon that. My Spanish is getting more refined and I'm actually understanding why certain grammatical structures are the way they are. My financé, who only knew the bare minimum of Spanish in January, has grown the MOST and has even corrected me at times with Spanish! Danny is super patient, understanding, and thorough with any questions we have every single lesson and it's honestly very hard to find that in a teacher these days. He has a nice balance of keeping the lesson entertaining, fun, but also challenging.
