The colors (black, rust, navy, cream), the layout, and the clothes themselves all go together. The feeling is warm and inviting, so you want to go explore all the pieces on display. I used to sell yarn and fabric, so I loved the different textures and materials on display, from a luxuriously dense knit sweater to an elegant silk blouse. The design of each item was trendy but approachable -- I am a jeans and t-shirt kinda lady but I saw things I would wear. So why didn't I come home with a whole new wardrobe? Price, of course, sigh. Les Étoffes is definitely a special-occasion boutique, and alas I was only sightseeing. While I was there, though, a young man was trying on shirts and mentioned that he was making his first L.E. purchase. It seemed like he'd been looking forward to that day for a while.

Most underwear and lingerie stores are just for women, which can be fun if you're shopping with a girlfriend or wife, but can be boring if you're shopping for yourself. That why it's fun to treat yourself to Caleçons Vos Gouts. The thing is though, they have way more than just men's underwear. They sell t-shirts, hoodies, loungewear, bathing suits and socks, and most of the clothes there are fun to wear. I used to be so happy when I'd find one thing in a store that was in purple for men. This place has lots and lots of stuff in purple and other bright, fun and wacky colours. The bamboo fabric is my fav. It feels like cotton, looks like cotton, but is way, way tougher than anything made of cotton. The shirts are so comfy and I really enjoy wearing them. They make me look a bit skinnier, which is also nice. :) Vicky and Veronica are really sweet and helpful. They don't seem to mind that I joke too much, don't know how to fold the clothes properly or that I've accidentally crashed into a rack of clothes once or twice. One time when I was there, I was like...'ok, it's 5pm, I've got to be in Montreal by 6pm, let's shop in 15 minutes'...and Vicky's like...'ok' and Veronica's like...'I'll let you know when it's 5:15'....aww, that's nice. Apparently everything is designed by the same guy who lives in Asia (Cambodia, maybe?) and studied fashion in Italy. The style is very eclectic, a little hippie and a little hipster with some Asian flair. I'll definitely be back when I don't have the Hubster waiting outside for me, his patience for my clothes shopping growing incredibly thin. I didn't buy anything this time around, having blown my budget elsewhere all over Montreal, but my friend bought a cute dress with an owl print on it. Everything looked to be about $45.

I bought a pair if handmade leather shoes that i typically see for $100-150USD and paid $86 Canadian or $66 USD here. The staff was also incredibly nice and helpful even though I do not speak any French (which has been a bit of a challenge here in my experience.) Even if I didn't find something to buy, just wandering about and looking was really nice. :)

The main selection of the products available in the store are textile items, including brightly coloured kimonos in painted silk, kimono cover jackets in *exquisite* and finely detailed shibori patterns, all also silk. There are tabi socks, tamari balls made with finely wrapped string patterns, amazing traditional firemen's jackets, so many kinds of sculptural scarves, woven scarves, and many other types of cloth. There are select housewares as well, such as cast iron teapots, ceramics, traditional wooden dolls and masks, a few garden ornaments, and jewelry. The store owner and her one staff person were extremely informative about all of the items in the store, and it was easy to see that the owner of this store takes a great deal of pride in offering very choice, high quality Japanese goods. Now, perhaps you, dear reader are wondering about prices, with all that high quality. Surprisingly, things are very fairly and reasonably priced! I am very, very tempted to go for one of those shibori jackets, as I have never seen anything like them anywhere in Montreal, and being a textile artist, I can deeply appreciate the extreme labour and craftsmanship that has gone into making them. I'm pretty sure I need those cute tabi socks, too. Definitely worth dropping in for a visit, to meet the people behind the counter, and learn a few things about Japanese culture! Something beautiful might just steal your heart, too. Or, next time you need a *nice* gift for someone, I say get it here.
