Because seriously, who doesn't want to quench their Amsterdam thirst before sipping on some very fine Espresso? I venture here mostly when the Neighborhood market is going on, which means throngs of locals, their kids, and possibly, their touristy friends, all looking to get some really good coffee without breaking the bank. There is usually a long line out the door...in today's case it took me about 10 minutes before I could even place an order. Oh, and the guy who took the order - total nice guy with a nice smile. The menu is really small - it's mostly a lot of coffees with some teas for people who like to drink teas at places with names that begin with 'Espresso' and some sweet stuff to go with said drinks. The ovens were working overtime, one batch after another in quick succession. Those fresh muffins will keep calling your name until you cave in and eat one. The apple pie actually had smoke erupting out of it, it was so fresh. I dig the espresso here...it's sort of pricey at €2 for a small, considering that one is never enough. The taste - oh so good! Did I mention free tap water and easy payment?

What luck, because I had actually stared at Google Maps for longer than I care to admit to find this place and lo and behold, I just rolled up to its patio area by sheer coincidence. (It's really not that hard to find. It's next to Ketelhuis.) I got an espresso for sitting at a sunny picnic bench outside while an electronica music festival beeped and buzzed in the park. The espresso was one of the best ones I've had in Amsterdam and if I had any space in my stomach, I would have gone for some of the intriguing little pastries they had on display.

I was greeted by a lovely Dutch barista who informed me that coffee shops are not a Dutch thing. The Dutch either drink coffee at home or work, but the trend is catching on. Either way, she was very nice and chatty and proceeded to make me a latte (3 Euros) with love and care. My idea of being a vegan has been thrown out the window since I arrived here. The coffee beans could use a bit of work, but otherwise, no complaints. This is definitely a nice spot to sit and have a cuppa while chatting with other people. The location is super convenient, being close to the center, and it's a fantastic spot to grab coffee before heading to the ferry or train. Unfortunately you can't use the US Starbucks app here (shouldn't the app be universal? I wish!) Not being able to use the app is annoying as Starbucks doesn't put their full menu on the menu board so you're not sure what you can order. For example, there is no iced coffee, only iced Americanos and iced lattes. Their refrigerated case was out of of stuff all 3 times I went here. As far as food, they have some unique to Netherlands items such as cheesecake (oddly, the slice with strawberry topping is slightly cheaper than the plain one.) It does get extremely busy due to the location but overall they move fairly quickly. Staff was perfect and the only drawbacks are due to Starbucks corporate decisions that make it difficult to order without the app. Also, because it's the Netherlands, there is no plastic and the paper cups aren't waxed - you need to drink your drink quickly because the cup itself starts to feel like it's getting waterlogged and soggy.
