Tacos... really dry and old tasting meat.
    Leanne V.

Stopped in at this restaurant for Taco Tuesday at around 3:30pm last Tuesday. It was pretty empty but we wanted some tacos & wanted to enjoy happy hour. The person who took our order was not friendly at all. She only spoke spanish, and my spanish isn't great but I was able to get by with what I wanted to order. We ordered our tacos and drinks , even though it was empty she took a while to bring everything out. The taco meat was so dry and tasted as it had been old and reheated. I didn't understand if it was Taco Tuesday and only 3:30pm how the meat wouldn't be fresh. Super disappointing. We ate them anyway because we were hungry. The margaritas were really good & the special on the 1/2 yard was good. The whole time we were there the lady who took our order never asked if we needed anything. We finished our drinks and left and ended up going somewhere else. I was looking forward to trying this place since we live close by but sadly I was disappointed and won't return.

On Cinco de Mayo 2026, I had a dinner meet up with one of my wonderful fellow Yelper at Mariposas & Cantina in Covina. It was her recommendation to come here for Taco Tuesday. Thank you my friend! Initially, we thought we would get the Taco Tuesday special, but since it was a holiday, they didn't have the taco special. This place used to be Kalaveras, but has been rebranded to Mariposas. It's a huge standalone colorful restauratnt inside and out. Menu had good selections. We ordered the Molcajete and a couple drinks. I got the House Slushie virgin style that had a very nice flavor... love the combination of homemade syrup and lime juice. I don't remember what my friend got. While we were waiting for our order, we got complimentary chips and salsa. It was so good. I had to order $10 worth of salsa to-go. As for the Molajete, it was my first time trying it. This was an intriguing and interesting dish. It came with different sizzling proteins such as steak, pork, shrimp, cactus, cheese, etc with stir-fried veggies served in a stone bowl called molcajete. Rice and beans plus 3 tortillas either corn or flour came with it. We had to ask for extra tortillas since there were two of us. This dish was deliciously tasty and filling. I love the well flavored proteins and sweet veggies. I didn't think I would get so full, but I did. Price was about $40+ because it serves at least 2 people. Definitely something that can be shared. It was worth it. Our server was a really nice young lady who was attending to several tables. She did the best she could. Kudos to her. Thank you Miss for the attention and care. We'll have to come back for Taco Tuesday next time. I heard it's a steal for amazing tacos. Thank you Mariposas & Cantina! See you again soon. What are you waiting for? Come give Mariposas a try!

Asada tacos were really really good. The quality and cook on the Asada was amazing. The tacos were $5/each so I wasn't really feeling that. But, the minute I bit in them, I was very impressed. The asada was grilled to a nice medium and Smokey. The guac and accompanying salsa were great. We asked for a side of salsa verde and it was served hot. I've never had a side of salsa served hot w/ tacos. I enjoyed it!

Huge fan of Mariposas here- The butterfly-emblazoned restaurant has quickly vaulted to the very peak of Mexican cuisine for my Michoacana wife and I. After scribing a two or three prior reviews about their in-house service/ambiance and food, today's review pertains solely with their CATERING. We hired Mariposas to prepare 45 of their mouth watering Quesabirrias Tacos for our holiday party on the 20th. Assistant Manager MAYRA was superlative throughout the two-wk process! Though they can typically handle most catering requests within a 3-day window, we'd placed our order with a fortnight's notice...just to be extra careful. Manager JESSE was businesslike and efficient in my two brief interactions with him, but Mayra was awesome throughout. Fielding multiple phone calls as we played "telephone ping pong" w/ the manager to helping us load our car w/ the multiple 18" X 26" roasting pans and various quarts of minced onions y cilantro and unctuous beefy consomme that comprised our bounty, Mayra was truly the "MVP" of this order! And the million-dollar question- What did our guests think?! In a spread that included marbled prime rib, double glazed Virginia hams and smoked turkeys, it was the MARIPOSAS QUESABIRRIAS TACOS that sailed offve the warming pans! Entrust Mariposas with your next catering order- You'll be delighted!!

Unlimited salsa for their Taco Tuesday!!

Mariposa Restaurant in the city of Covina. Love the aesthetic of the place, very instagrammable! Came in for their Taco Tuesday deal. Servers are nice and friendly though a little slow. For the price of $1.99 a taco I would say it's a pretty good deal. Tacos are delicious ! I love their pickled onion. Just FYI not all of the meat in the menu are included in their Taco Tuesday deal. Will definitely come back to try the rest of their menu.

Already didn't have the greatest experience last time but decided to give it another try for the brunch buffet. When we went previously it said brunch was about $28 and $38 for unlimited mimosas. We got there and they had crossed out the $28 option. I asked one of the girls why it was taken out and that we didn't want the mimosas as we don't drink. She said that's fine but still one price not accommodating at all especially knowing it's a new change. Not coming back this place sucks! We went straight to fonda don chon much better food anyways.

The service was amazing as soon as my date and I came up the staff was friendly and ready to take our order. The food was amazing I went for happy hour. My date wanted a classic margarita and I ordered the pepino slushee! So delicious, my date stated the margarita was missing something. The food we ordered was the loaded carne asada fries and the flavors weee delicious and I enjoyed the fact that the fries were Cajun. We also ordered the tacos dorados de papa and it was missing a spicier salsa. Besides that everything was delicious. The ambiance is chill and it was a bit quite but the music Spotify list was popping. We will for sure come back for brunch in the weekend.

The food was delicious however the service was really slow. It was actually terrible we're a party of two and it took a long time to get our drinks. We got a to go box before we got out send drink order. While we waited for our drinks two separate tables got up left. So sad !! The girl that clean our table was kind. U don't think they have a bartender on staff. I would definitely sip brunch . May be dinner is better.. that's to bad because I ewes real Looking forward to brunch with my bestie, it a great location and plenty of parking

Mariposas (Covina) offered largely portioned, delicious food. Its staff is knowledgeable and welcoming. And its ambiance is enchanting. Beautiful murals aside, I sat below a glass blue ceiling surrounded with greenery and adorable butterfly art. Mariposas (Covina) was packed with happy, chatting customers. I ordered the "Pasta A La Diabla" ($20.49). The dish is humongous! This pasta is covered in creamy chipotle sauce, crumbly cotija cheese, chili flakes, and plump shrimp. This cheesy, creamy pasta is not too spicy; rather, its heat resembles the peppers you'd shake onto a pizza slice. It's delicious!! In addition, I arrived during Taco Tuesday, so I selected two Asada/Beef Tacos ($1.99 each). I enjoyed its fresh flavor and quality, clean ingredients. Its tiny soft tortilla also tasted very fresh. The overall portion is rather small; however, it's a good deal for the low Taco Tuesday price. (Quick Note: Without Taco Tuesday, tacos cost $4.95. And importantly, Taco Tuesday does not include all the tacos. Taco Tuesday includes: Asada/Beef Taco, Pollo/Chicken Taco, Barbacoa/Braised Beef Taco, Chicharron Taco, and Carnitas/Pork Taco.) I arrived at Mariposas (Covina) on Tuesday (around 6:55PM). As mentioned, the place is shockingly busy. The parking lot is also humongous, so there's plenty of easy parking. I approached the counter, and staff kindly wrote my name. Then, I sat in the waiting area. For a "Table for One," I waited 12 minutes and 16 seconds before being seated. The entire process felt very professional and comfortable. I enjoyed the plush, comfy seats in the waiting area. Also, the location felt very well-ventilated and airy despite it being extremely crowded and bustling. I sat at a very clean, shiny table. And I was served by a very knowledgeable, charming, and helpful staff member (Gianina). Gianina took my order and helped explained the menu. I noticed that soda or iced tea wasn't listed on the menu, and Gianina quickly explained that soda & iced tea cost $4 with unlimited refills. Gianina thoroughly and enthusiastically answered any questions. I ordered the "Pasta A La Diabla" ($20.49), two Asada/Beef Tacos ($1.99 each on Taco Tuesday), and a Razzberry Iced Tea ($4). All the food arrived in eight minutes and 15 seconds. Very fast! Strangely enough, the drink arrived much later than the entrees. The Razzberry Iced Tea arrived in 14 minutes and 14 seconds. As mentioned prior, the meal tasted delicious. The tacos had good ingredients. The pasta was tasty and huge. The pasta's garlic bread is also tasty! And the Razzberry Iced Tea is refreshing. I happily enjoyed several free refills of the beverage, and I appreciated how Gianina offered to send me a to-go cup with another refill. It was also very simple to wave Gianina down and get additional assistance. It's absolutely wonderful how Mariposas (Covina) has such amazing, helpful staff. Ambiance is festive and upbeat. The music is not overwhelming; rather, the bouncy beat just meshes well with the lovely environment. There are even televisions showing the soccer game with captions in Espanol. The vibe felt very fun while still maintaining a cozy family friendly atmosphere. If I were to nitpick my experience, I'd say that the food's plating was a little messy. I had to grab a napkin to clean the plate's edges. Also, the plump shrimp in my pasta tasted like they were boiled for a little too long. The shrimps lacked any seasonings or taste which felt strange in such a flavorful pasta. Also, Mariposas' floors can sometimes get splotchy quickly from tiny bits of spilled liquids. Despite all that, Mariposas (Covina) does so many things right! It truly feels like Mariposas (Covina) flows seamlessly. Management deserves a huge round of applause! Although I enjoyed the old Kalaveras, Mariposas (Covina) is leaps ahead in offering a stellar dining experience. To my utter delight, I had a near perfect experience. Wait times are long, but I happily recommend! 5 out of 5.

Drinks are good. Food is not great. I had the pescado Jarocho and it's a plain/bland tilapia fillet with a plain red sauce over it. I was expecting it be cooked in a different way. Perhaps fire-grilled. It was served with tostones made of plantains. It just didn't taste like a Mexican dish.

Ask the Community - Mariposas Restaurant & Cantina

Are football games shown in the bar area on Mondays and Thursdays?

    Yes

No sarcasm or agenda.... how is this different from Calaveras?

Very similar to Calaveras but pricing is better here in my opinion.

Need more info on Sunday Brunch?? Price $$ of brunch, is it off menu or buffet & does it come w/ unlimited mimosas? Also time for Sunday brunch Thx

Brunch is a buffet setup. Drinks are not included in the $25.99 price.

Is this the same Mariposa that was on West Covina restaurant row?

No, it's not the same owner from the other Mariposa restaurant.

I tried calling the number but it goes to a cell phone that has no voicemail, need to know if i need a reservation, can someone give me a number?

You can make a reservation right on the Yelp app or on Open Table.

    Is this Mariposas or Kalaveras?

As of May 2025, the restaurant is now Mariposas.

Will they show the Dodgers games?

    Yes, they have several TVs

So do with that as you will. Locals must think this is good food. Located in a tiny corner strip mall on a desolate street is this little breakfast/brunch place. I wish I had listened to the 1 star reviews and not gone in. I especially wish I had seen that Yelp had their health listing rated at C before I ordered. Isn't it the law that a restaurant must display their health rating in the window, cause it wasn't displayed anywhere to be seen. So first they brought out a large jug of water with some fruit slices and mint in it. Would've been nice if the water wasn't room temperature. Is the ice machine not working? Then came the best part of the entire meal - my hazelnut latte. The coffee was good and the cup is gigantic. My teen had the french toast, eggs (scrambled), and bacon plate. The one slice of french toast was okay but nothing special. The eggs were bland and lacking any seasoning including salt and pepper. The bacon, of which I got a side for myself, too, was absolutely disgusting. At first I thought the bacon had been cooked possibly on a dirty grill in old grease or right after something else had been cooked, as it had a horrendous aftertaste like rotten meat and sweaty gym socks. They made a new plate but this one was raw, despite being ordered well done and crispy. Raw. And it absolutely stunk. That was when I came to think it might be uncured pork belly like you get a Korean KBBQ and not bacon at all. Luckily they cancelled the order. I also got a side of the breakfast (rosemary) potatoes, which I also ordered crispy and well done but arrived as a scoop of mush. They tasted okay but I saw crispy potatoes at numerous other tables. Don't know why they couldn't cook as ordered. I also had the dutch baby. I'm sorry but this is a dessert bread pudding and not a real dutch baby pancake. The inside should be airy and fluffy, not sopping wet. I'm not sure if the inside was undercooked and possibly raw dough or if they make it with some sweetened cream inside. It was not good, and it was way too sweet. Instant diabetes sweet. I will never go back. I strongly recommend that all people stay as far away as possible. The service was good - friendly and attentive, but what good is that when the food is so awful? I also had severe stabbing pains in my stomach for a couple hours after getting home. Avoid at all costs!

It's located where the old Sizzler used to be (RIP to the cheese bread ). We went on a Sunday around 12:30. It was pretty quiet, but since they close at 2, that made sense. Service was prompt and friendly, and once we ordered, our food came out quickly. The menu is smaller and definitely diner-style. The food itself was just okay -- nothing bad, but nothing standout either. Basic eggs and hash browns. The corned beef hash was clearly from a can, which didn't bother me. The biscuits were a little hard and cold, but the gravy was actually pretty good. Now for the pricing -- $5 for an iced tea and around $7 for orange juice feels a little wild. Our total was $89 before tip for 4 adults and 2 kids (the kids shared one pancake, which was a good size). Overall, it was a decent experience. A bit pricey for what you get, but solid enough. We'd probably go back if we were in the area again -- next time we'd try the lunch menu instead. 4 solid stars.

As my family and I are seating my 4 year old hopped on the booth and was moving to his spot when the booth collapsed in and my son fell in between the wood and floor. He instantly started crying the ONLY EMPLOYEE that came to check on us was Litzy who wasn't even our server she just happened to be near by and helped move us to another booth, and said that she was going to let the manager aware of what happened and that the manager would be checking on us. We move to our booth and our server comes to assist us at our new booth acting like nothing happened. We were upset and debating if we should leave but our kids were hungry so we continued to order hoping the experience would get better and waiting for the manager. The manager never came, we saw a woman Asian employee who looked like the manager & asked her if she was the manager she said kind of not really but asked if there was something she could help with. We just told her nothing we were waiting for the manager. Still no one came. The food was awful flies all inside the building. My husband took our 4 year old to the restroom and immediately said EWW. Restrooms disgusting. We got the check and our server told us she only charged us for the adult plates and not the kids plates bc of what happened with our son falling. Her first time acknowledging what happened to my son, not once did she ask if he was okay or needed anything. My husband complained to Litzy who was processing our payment about our experience at their establishment. She apologized deeply for our experience (EVEN THOUGH IT HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH HER) and was the only employee to show concern over our son getting hurt shoutout Litzy the only employee with a heart and good customer service. Families stay away from here all booths are wobbly and not secure, the spot is filthy. If something happens the staff is going to keep acting like they saw nothing. Better off going to McDonald's.

The WORSE thing about this is that the worker at the bar area told him if he was looking for someone & he said he was waiting for an interview & the man said WHAT NO & laughed about it, instantly the man waiting for an interview looked discouraged especially since he said it where customers can hear , that to me was a bully comment. Some older lady came and said the manager was in a meeting & to come back later, but he wanted to wait so she offered him coffee or water. Caramelo is way too good & customer service is great to have bullies as an employee. Obviously if the gentleman is waiting for an interview Is because there's space for more employees to work.
