Popped in here before a trip to the nearby AMC and had a great and reasonably priced dinner. Im on a super restricted diet at the moment so my choices are unfortunately limited but they had plenty of options for both me and my (free to eat whatever) partner. The fruit smoothies were an unexpected treat as they use minimal ingredients (real fruit, ice, simple syrup). The macarons are a little misleading when they go by on the conveyer belt (for example, the brownish one was actually lemon and not chocolate) but they were crispy and delicious. Would definitely go back here if I was in Lombard. read more

Kai Sushi was quite possibly one of the worst places we've ever ordered from. We tried a total of six different rolls, and although they did look decent when we opened the box, every single one of them had something off about it. We had fish that was hard and cold, tempura that was refrigerated, crispy flakes that were stale, etc. We ordered early on a Sunday evening, which is when I imagine business is highest and thus quality should be at its best, but that was not the case. My husband and I were so disappointed with the whole experience and definitely wouldn't return. read more

We came here around 7:30 on a weekday night. The restaurant was empty. We were a little surprised. We got Happy Mango Roll, Tokyo Sandwich Roll, Tako Gunkan, and some that I forgot the name of it. They don't have a lot of variety on the conveyor belt. We were not sure if everything was freshly made since there was no one there. They have rolls that were not on the conveyor belt so we had to order it. Most of the rolls were ok not very good and not real bad. Some sushi tasted like they were on the belt for awhile. The only good ones were the one that we ordered. The staff was attentive and nice. She kept coming back making sure we don't need to order any rolls that were not on the belt. The restaurant itself is cute and clean. I don't think I will go back to try again. I feel like there are better option conveyor belt sushi around the area. read more

I discovered this place on yelp. Cute place! I was afraid with this concept that I would overeat or pay too much. However, there were plenty of options at various price points. Some of the specialty rolls didn't come around during our visit. Quality of rolls were ok. They do have a small menu if sushi isn't your thing. They also have a decent dessert and saki menu. My sister friend and I stopped in Kai Sushi after shopping at Costco! What a great surprise. The conveyer belt is not only filled with FRESH sushi, but it is always full. My sister got the pickled cucumbers and made me try them....they did not disappoint!!! The vinegar taste was not overbearing and of course was the perfect palette cleanser. I could not stop eating the deep fried crab and shrimp tempura roll. Whew!!! I want one right now! The prices are priced per plate and the highest priced plate was $9.50. The service was great. The cashier/waiter was attentive and kind. We ate two plates of the fried crab roll, one plate of pickled cucumbers, two plates of smoked salmon and chicken tenders and fries for my toddler......my total was $47. The inside of Kai Sushi is a nice size. There are about 15 booths that can fit 3-5 people each. The place also has bar chairs for the conveyer belt. If you have not visited Kai Sushi, go! read more

This is a one and done for me for Kai Sushi. Definitely not 5 star quality. The quality here has more misses than hits. The black plates and the special orders are why I'm giving them one more star. I would not recommend getting any of the fried stuff like tempura and crab rangoon, they've been sitting out too long. The yellow plates are decent. Red and orange are like eh, you can tell they're not fresh. Service was good. The place was mostly empty when we came for dinner. Prices are expensive for the mediocre quality you receive. You're honestly better off going to Kitakata Ramen next door. You'll save money and also get better food. However, if you are in the mood for conveyor belt sushi, I recommend making the trip to Chicago to go to Sushi Plus Rotary in Chinatown, not the Aurora one. read more

I was on the fence with three vs four stars. The novelty of conveyor belt sushi pushed me up to 4 stars. All of the 'good' pieces of sushi that you want are probably the most expensive ones :-) But I had decent service and the ambiance was nice. And I do love the format of conveyor belt sushi. I tried a number of different plates. The way it works is; you grab whatever you want from the conveyor belt as it goes around. The color of the plate indicates how much it costs. When you're done, the waitstaff collects your empty plates and charges you based on what color the plates were. read more

Cool sushi place that has their food travelling around conveyor belt style on colored plates. The plate color dictates the price. You can also order food from the menu, if you wanted something specific (ramen, miso soup, fried rice, etc). Staff has always been helpful and friendly. It's not the best sushi (or Asian food) you'll ever have, but the novelty of the conveyor belt is fun enough. My family and I have been here several times, and it is always a big hit with the kids, but (as with everything lately) prices have gone up and seems portion sizes have decreased somewhat. For us, I think the novelty has worn off and with the increased prices may only go here for special occasions. read more

I used to frequent this sushi restaurant when I worked nearby. It's been a while since I've been back and was looking forward to dining here for dinner. Tonight was a HUGE disappointment and I will NEVER come back. I was surprised that there was very limited Maki rolls on the conveyer belt on a Saturday evening at 7:30pm. The server told us to write down any rolls we wanted that were not on the belt. We waited over 20 min for our rolls to come out. Also we ordered these mussels that took forever to come out and when they did it was a full order which we said we wanted whatever portion they come on the belt which was 3 pieces. We were served an entire order of 6. I told the server no big deal we will keep it. The owner came over to rectify the situation and she told me just take 3 mussels off the plate and she took the other 3 mussels away. It was so shocking to see this when most establishments would say it's ok we will take it off the bill. To see her take the plate away was embarrassing to be honest. Also the Maki rolls were terrible. The seaweed wrapper was so chewy and rubbery in texture. It tasted off and the rice was so mushy. I spent over $80 for terrible food and service. This used to be a place that I gave 5 stars but today if I could give zero stars I would. read more

Veggie sushi lovers unite! I have visited here twice now and love the sushi! Although it is a conveyor belt sushi restaurant, they still offer a menu with additional choices - including a "veggie lovers" section of sushi maki rolls! I've tried the avocado, sweet potato, and spicy garden crunch and likes them all! I really appreciate the uniqueness of the spicy garden crunch, but also take caution that the fresh jalapeños can be quite spicy! This place gets busy, but the service is still good. My husband orders off the menu (udon stir-fry noodles) and our bill is reasonable, but I wouldn't say it's cheap. It's priced just right! Will definitely be back many times! read more

Kai Sushi - Spicy Garden Crunch Roll and the Sweet Potato Maki Roll, with Shishito peppers - Conveyor Belt Sushi Near Me - Lombard, Illinois

Haven't had sushi in awhile and this spot did not disappoint. Walked in and got seated right away, it was around 6:30. Waiter starts off with drinks and then you can choose to order off the menu if you'd like and you can also grab sushi and other goods from the conveyor belt. We did both, a little bit of everything. It goes by plates and the sushi you grab you get charged by plate, the different types are shown in a picture at the restaurant. I included some sushi we had grabbed obviously didn't take pictures of all of them but they were pretty good. Got some appetizers as well, we got lucky because they were still hot. Got some dessert as well, crème brûlée which I don't know why I thought it would be a good idea but I have it a shot. 5/10, not the best. Sushi we ordered was spicy shrimp tempura and shogun roll, because they were running out on the belt. $5 for 5 prices when we ordered. Not too bad, our bill came out to $45 which I don't think was bad considering how much we got to try either having plates of sushi of 3 or 4 pieces so it adds up. 4/5 stars only because I wish the cooks were putting out more variety on the conveyor belt. As in, many plates that showed what roll what supposed to be next to it was empty for a couple rounds it went around and we never got to try. Other than that I recommend, great for group outings! Waiter was friendly as well as staff! read more

I'm not sure how to rate this place - it's conveyor belt sushi with a nearly empty conveyor belt which is no fun and defeats the point. That said, what we did try was all quite good except the crab rangoons (not enough filling, pretty empty inside). read more

Second time visiting Kai, and pretty disappointed. The whole lure is the rotating belt and there was almost no rolls coming through on the conveyor, just the same desserts that had quite possibly been rotating all day. We ordered some rolls off the menu since there were no options on the belt. The caterpillar roll is tasty. The rolls we got with raw fish did not seem fresh, fishy taste and not enjoyable. There are better sushi places in the area if you are craving sushi. read more

We sat at the bar and we really enjoyed how the rotary had the appetizers on the belt so we didn't have to order them. Plus the belt is huge so there are many options. The edamame, Gyoza, and shrimp shumai were all very tasty. Our personal favorite sushi was the mango roll, we would definitely grab at least two or three plates when we come back. We also tried their bento boxes, the steak teriyaki was good and the chicken Katsu was some of the best we've ever had. I also highly recommend their honey lemon tea. The waitress we had was very attentive and friendly. The restaurant is a smaller and more intimate setting but we didn't feel cramped. Total for all the food we got was very reasonable for the amount and quality. We will definitely be coming back here again. read more

FYI- they don't close after lunch now. Arrived at 5pm. Tons of sushi sitting out. Everything was cold and soggy. Asked for a fresh roll and instead, they insisted on taking one that was out on our table to "heat up". Brought it back a few minutes later, and it had been dropped into the fryer (after being sliced and on our table), so it was filled with oil and then they just put a bunch more sauce on top of it. At that point they did ask if I wanted a fresh one, but I was disgusted and over it. My thought is that their lunch rush ended at 1pm, 2pm max and everything had been out for 3+ hours? Someone is going to get seriously sick from here. read more

Have to compare this sushi bar to other sushi bars, and it fell short. The sushi fell somewhere between Mariano's sushi and gas station sushi- the sushi at Kai Sushi was a disappointment. Good: sashimi, nigiri, and the waitress service. All the employees were friendly and delightful. Neat concept. Not good: the sushi rolls, the hot tea. Conveyor belt sushi wasn't on our bucket list and finding another conveyor belt sushi won't be a budding priority. Some of the draws of sushi include the attention to detail, freshness, crispness, and texture. After the sushi rolls sat in the little container, the rice wanted to stick to the plate which sort of hampered the experience. I felt that the sushi chefs had to keep banging out more plates of sushi to satisfy customers, which altered the quality of the sushi in a harmful way. The sushi rolls were not flavorful, and lacked the textures that we have become accustomed to. Not one "chef's plate" or "daily special" plate came by us during our entire dinner, and it wasn't because some other patron ate them- those plates weren't prepared. I can't believe that "conveyor belt sushi" is a restaurant category on Yelp. One more thing, no matter what, every suburban restaurant has a mandatory 0.5 - 1.0 star deduction compared to a similar restaurant in the city of Chicago. Suburban Yelpers skew the ratings, and this restaurant is a prime example. read more

tl;dr Sushi were average at best. Skip this spot, and go next door for ramen instead. Food: 2/5 * Nigiri selection was extremely limited, surprisingly for a conveyor belt sushi spot. * Rolls were overloaded with dressing. * For a sushi restaurant, I've expected more. Service: 5/5 (Not included in the overall rating) * The waiter was attentive to keep water refilled and make sure we are OK during our stay. read more

I would say the concept and the layout was really good but the food varied. Most of the sushi was great, but then there were some that were made with older rice (the purple plates or daily specials) and some that weren't tighten enough and fell apart. The rice to fish ratio was decent as was the price. I think between 3 of us, we spent $70, even after getting three desserts. Anything non-sushi on the belt, like the octopus salad or sesame balls I would say skip unless you know they just came of the kitchen. Even though we came here right at opening I could tell some of the stuff making it's way towards us had been sitting there for a while. Also, some of the sushi wasn't really uniformed. The unagi ones (my fav) were inconsistently big or small compared to ones on some of the other plates. That's coming from a semi-picky sushi eater. If you don't care about most of those things, this place would be great for you. If you just want to be full and eat decent sushi than come here. I would still take out-of-towners here if they were hankering for sushi because I feel like they would enjoy the conveyor belt aspect of it. It's fun for all ages! read more

If you don't see something you want on the rotary belt, you can check out their menu and your server will be able to have it made for you! The service has always been wonderful here too. Food and service fell short of my expectations. The selection of food that came down was few. Most everything was always gone. A good handful of items were never seen-tho clearly advertised. It's kinda weird because before the plate comes around there is an explanation of the item. But there were mor explanations than actual food. Also, service was non existent. Impossible to order off the menue, or get refills on water. I actually saw some people holding their hands up (3-5min) like in a classroom. Guys I'm in love. The staff is sweet, funny and attentive. The place is clean and updated. The sushi is fresh and freakin so good.

This was my first time at a sushi rotary type restaurant. I like the concept a lot. You walk in, sit down and automatically start eating. My boyfriend and I came in on a Friday night when we were wandering around in the suburbs. The place was fairly empty for a holiday weekend, but we decided to give it a chance either way. We were seated immediately and the waitress took the time to explain the concept of the restaurant and how it works. You can either order stuff off the menu, or just grab whatever looks appetizing to you from the rotary. There was a wide variety of options and the prices were decent. Watch out though, this could add up really quickly. Not everything that you see on the menu is placed out on the rotary. It's either there by chance or you have to actually place and order for it. I wanted the spicy crab salad but it never came out on the rotary so I had to order it myself. Bottom line the sushi was okay, not that special or amazing. It's cheap, convenient, fast food type of sushi. If you are looking for a quick bite, then this is the place for you. Service is fast and somewhat friendly. We will be back if we are ever out in the suburbs again. read more
