All that was left of our fresh salmon dinner by time I remembered to shoot a pic. Fantastic!

Up until this point we have been pretty unhappy with the food in the Talkeetna area--really expensive and poorly executed. We were pleasantly surprised however when we visited the Kahiltna Bistro. We spent the day fishing for salmon and caught a bunch, when one of our guides suggested that we take some to town and get then cooked up for dinner that day--sounded great (and was!) He took us to KB, we dropped off the fillets and made a reservation. When we arrived we ordered some apps from a menu that looked pretty interesting. Ended up with the crab cakes, guac and chips. The crab cakes were decent, but the guac was a miss--was pretty much just avocado and tomato. Then we got to the entree--our fish. It was beautifully cooked in an Asian style, sauced, and served on a bed of (jasmine?) rice with Julianned veg. Wonderful! And so fresh of course!! 1 fillet for each of us, $18-PLEANTY of food! Dessert was to follow and we opted for the White Chocolate Creme Brulee, Berry Cobbler w/ice cream and Chocolate Lava Cake w/ice cream. The Lava Cake took the gold medal and we were basically fighting over who would lick the plate! The cobbler was very good and unusual with the mixture of cherries, rhubarb and other berries. The creme brûlée while good was a miss mostly due to the fact that they did not "brûlée" the top and opted to add a small sugar tuile instead which is just not the same and that wonderful crack you get breaking thru the normal crust. Our server was over-the-top perfect in every way and rounded out the best experience we had in town! We highly recommend this place and hope you all get to experience it just like we did

Amazing food and service! The Bistro may not seem like much from the outside or even from the inside, but the food was fantastic. We started with the Alaskan steamer clams, then side salads, with HB enjoying the King Salmon and I had the halibut. Both fish dishes were perfectly cooked and had a nice presentation. We enjoyed a glass of beer followed by two glasses of Pinot Noir. Andrej, our server, was efficient and made us tourists feel welcome.

I'm truly amazed at how high the ratings are here, but at least on the day we went, it was just...bad. The place itself is terribly small and quaint, with an awkward seating arrangement. At least our table was right next to the kitchen and the doorway. The menu was also terribly small (maybe 8 items??), and the foods were mediocre at best...and priced way too high for what you get. I ordered the sandwich (Ham & Cheese?) and soup (Clam Chowder) combo...and well, both were just Blah. My husband felt the same about his Halibut Burger (I thought McDonald's Fish Filet looked better). Sorry, but I just can't sugar coat this.

Halibut Sandwich. The best tartar I have had in a while!!

Service was fantastic! I was greeted at the table with "Hello, I'm glad to see you today" in a very sincere pleasant way. I Ordered a iced tea and it was delivered promptly. Menu specials were shared with enthusiasm and we both had the Halibut burger. The Halibut was cooked perfectly and the bun was grilled and the chips were fresh and crisp (not soggy like most places). The tartar sauce also stole the show and was flavorful and lemony. Our server shared with us the dinner specials for tonight if we wanted to come back, and even though we were too full for dessert, she tempted us with a description of all 3 desserts to consider if we visited again! We sat outdoor and watched the trains. Beautiful day to experience the nice outdoor patio.

Kahiltna Bistro is Associated with the Talkeetna Fishing Guides (of which we did a morning fishing trip). The Bistro has a nice menu and everything we saw others order looked great. This is the only place in town that will cook your catch (salmon, trout, etc) which is an excellent option if you have a good fishing trip and aren't freezing and hauling it home. Their normal spread (pictured) is a nice display and cooked to perfection. They also did outstanding fish tacos for us the second and 3rd time we came (in a row... we had a great catch even though the river was running high)? The regular cook your catch display is an tasty small spread of seasoned rice and fresh vegetables with your salmon well seasoned and cooked to the perfect temp. Note: this restaurant is mislabeled. It is not "Mexican" and is more American/Cafe and they have a full coffee bar and beer/cider/wine bar as well.

Good service. Good food. Only beer and wine. Nothing gourmet but solid. Clean and comfortable.

Great Fish and Chips best I've had since visiting the Denali area. The friendly atmosphere was a plus too.

West Rib Pub & Grill - Cheeseburger & fries

West Rib Pub & Grill

Oh dear. What's happened to West Rib? I used to LOVE coming here, when i was a mere stripling of a…read moretourist way back in 2010, and i have returned many times. I organized an overnight camping trip JUST so i could have dinner at West Rib again, man, what a disappointment. Was the place always this run down, and shabby? Did the sun get in my eyes and blind me? Well anyway, so after me demanding we go to West Rib, yet seeing most other eateries in town absolutely BULGING with tourists, i was a little taken aback by the solo diner in the outside space at West Rib. Gamely i ploughed on with my choice, thinking "maybe i should have gone somewhere else" The server was a nice enough young girl, and she bowed each time she visited the table, and i have absolutely no issues with her - very polite and nice. When she brought the menu, i was shocked. I am sure, i am positive it used to be fatter, had many more choices, every other time I've been here. I distinctly remember a certain sauce or dip i used to order that had a funky name, and was sort of like a schmear but runnier. Now there's only a single page to order from. I wanted to leave. I honestly was on the verge of getting up and going. Anyway, I ordered the Stubbs Burger - hadn't realized he was the Mayor Cat dude, nor that the burger was named after him. Husband ordered the special which was a Brisket Sandwich, and some Jalapeno Poppers to start. The food was fairly fast to come out, and the Poppers were hot, and came with a cool, creamy sauce, maybe ranch? They were ok, taste like every other Jalapeno Popper I've had, I'm not that keen on them to be honest. Then the entrees came out very quickly after that, so i just got started on my burger. Well - see I've been off potatoes in all their glorious forms since February, but these beer-battered fries looked so appetizing, that i grabbed a handful and distributed them evenly across my burger. And i must say - the burger was perfect. I like a well-done, no-pink burger. This was absolutely exactly how i would have asked for it to be cooked if given the choice, i had to take off the onion and the tomato off (they give me stomachache) but of course the 10 fries i put in there filled the gap nicely. And the cheese was oozing very beautifully and dripping out of the bottom. It was gorgeous. He said his Brisket Sandwich was really good too, so despite the place's shabby, and rundown appearance, and slimmer menu - what they cook, they do it very well. I did hear disquieting rumours regarding West Rib, from people around town when i said i was going there for dinner, so whatever they've done, has gotten them a bad reputation in town, which is quite sad really. It holds fond memories for me, due to it being one of the first places my husband took me when we weren't married yet, and i hadn't moved here.

I can't recommend this place anymore. They say they will be open when you talk to them (in person-…read morethey also run tbe grocery store), then they aren't. They told me they are having a hard time finding staff this year. Every time I've stayed in Talkeetna they've been closed, even when they told me they planned to be open. They aren't updating their website or voice-mail either. The place is dilapidated and run down as well. Such a shame.
