This was a respite spot as we awaited a wonderful afternoon session on mushing and dog care. We had a big lunch before and, even three hours later, were too full to eat. But as we waited for a bus back to our lodge, we had time for ciders (rhubarb and apple). Both were great. Even better: the ambience. This place is tiny, filled with locals and tourists, and just somewhere you could spend an Alaskan summer. The mostly seafood entrees smelled great. The staff were professional and friendly. This is a very old town north of Anchorage toward Mount McKinley. The ambience of the outdoor seating area was very nice. The menu is a little limited, but very Alaskan. Best dinner we've had in Alaska so far. Most places in Talkeetna seem to be bar/pub type restaurants. Kahiltna Bistro does have a bar, but lends itself more to a local, quieter restaurant. From the moment we walked in, we felt a friendly vibe. Our beautiful waitress, Rae-Janell, was helpful, attentive and her lovely smile made our delicious dinner even more enjoyable. While there, we watched locals stop in for a drink or to get their "oyster fix". They have a menu that is available all day and a dinner menu that begins at 5:00. Patrons talk to one another & we chatted with a gentleman who was from our home state of West Virginia (even though he was a Pitt fan). I splurged on the King Crab and it was worth every penny. My husband had the filet steak and said it was juicy and tender. If we are ever back in Talkeetna, we would definitely have a meal here again. read more

Up until this point we have been pretty unhappy with the food in the Talkeetna area--really expensive and poorly executed. We were pleasantly surprised however when we visited the Kahiltna Bistro. We spent the day fishing for salmon and caught a bunch, when one of our guides suggested that we take some to town and get then cooked up for dinner that day--sounded great (and was!) He took us to KB, we dropped off the fillets and made a reservation. When we arrived we ordered some apps from a menu that looked pretty interesting. Ended up with the crab cakes, guac and chips. The crab cakes were decent, but the guac was a miss--was pretty much just avocado and tomato. Then we got to the entree--our fish. It was beautifully cooked in an Asian style, sauced, and served on a bed of (jasmine?) rice with Julianned veg. Wonderful! And so fresh of course!! 1 fillet for each of us, $18-PLEANTY of food! Dessert was to follow and we opted for the White Chocolate Creme Brulee, Berry Cobbler w/ice cream and Chocolate Lava Cake w/ice cream. The Lava Cake took the gold medal and we were basically fighting over who would lick the plate! The cobbler was very good and unusual with the mixture of cherries, rhubarb and other berries. The creme brûlée while good was a miss mostly due to the fact that they did not "brûlée" the top and opted to add a small sugar tuile instead which is just not the same and that wonderful crack you get breaking thru the normal crust. Our server was over-the-top perfect in every way and rounded out the best experience we had in town! We highly recommend this place and hope you all get to experience it just like we did read more

Food- a couple of the meals were terrible, a couple just not good. Before ordering the fish and chips, I asked the waitress if the fries were coated and whether there was heavy breading on the fish. She said no too both; turned the fish was very heavily breaded and the "steak fries" were coated. Kids quesadillas were also bad. Wife's crab salad was drenched in mayo despite being told otherwise. Tuna poke was ok, but very watery. Service-waitress was a real sweetheart but had to be asked at least twice for EVERYTHING. Owner was miserable and rude to us and other customers. This made sense when we saw the for sale sign on the business in the parking lot and overheard her mention it to someone she knew. Avoid this place. read more

I'm truly amazed at how high the ratings are here, but at least on the day we went, it was just...bad. The place itself is terribly small and quaint, with an awkward seating arrangement. At least our table was right next to the kitchen and the doorway. The menu was also terribly small (maybe 8 items??), and the foods were mediocre at best...and priced way too high for what you get. I ordered the sandwich (Ham & Cheese?) and soup (Clam Chowder) combo...and well, both were just Blah. My husband felt the same about his Halibut Burger (I thought McDonald's Fish Filet looked better). Sorry, but I just can't sugar coat this. read more

Amazing food and service! The Bistro may not seem like much from the outside or even from the inside, but the food was fantastic. We started with the Alaskan steamer clams, then side salads, with HB enjoying the King Salmon and I had the halibut. Both fish dishes were perfectly cooked and had a nice presentation. We enjoyed a glass of beer followed by two glasses of Pinot Noir. Andrej, our server, was efficient and made us tourists feel welcome. read more

You're joking, right? Crab cakes contain bread crumbs....only. Basic salad ok but at $16?! $9 French fries? We walked out of there after 2 salads and an order of fries... and a coke and glass of bad Chardonnay...with tip $71. They were nice enough to remove the inedible crab cakes. Service was fantastic! I was greeted at the table with "Hello, I'm glad to see you today" in a very sincere pleasant way. I Ordered a iced tea and it was delivered promptly. Menu specials were shared with enthusiasm and we both had the Halibut burger. The Halibut was cooked perfectly and the bun was grilled and the chips were fresh and crisp (not soggy like most places). The tartar sauce also stole the show and was flavorful and lemony. Our server shared with us the dinner specials for tonight if we wanted to come back, and even though we were too full for dessert, she tempted us with a description of all 3 desserts to consider if we visited again! Kahiltna Bistro is Associated with the Talkeetna Fishing Guides (of which we did a morning fishing trip). The Bistro has a nice menu and everything we saw others order looked great. This is the only place in town that will cook your catch (salmon, trout, etc) which is an excellent option if you have a good fishing trip and aren't freezing and hauling it home. Their normal spread (pictured) is a nice display and cooked to perfection. They also did outstanding fish tacos for us the second and 3rd time we came (in a row... we had a great catch even though the river was running high)? The regular cook your catch display is an tasty small spread of seasoned rice and fresh vegetables with your salmon well seasoned and cooked to the perfect temp. Note: this restaurant is mislabeled. It is not "Mexican" and is more American/Cafe and they have a full coffee bar and beer/cider/wine bar as well. read more

I overheard an exchange between the female manager/owner (?) and a local pilot about how awful her customers were. She also quoted his party $40/lb for the King Crab leg special - they charged us +$100/lb! And the shells were soft and rubbery - not the normal hard shells we are accustomed to. They brought us scissors and told us that they were perfectly fine. Even the local party seated next to us told us that rubbery soft shells were not normal for Alaskan King Crab legs. We powered through and hopefully won't get sick. When the bill came they had already included an 18% tip for our party of 2 - pity because we would have paid 20%, but we are not going to out-tip the restaurant if that's what they think their service is worth. The service was great, but the management and food - not so much. read more

Let me start off the waitress is really the only thing getting the stars. She was an absolute doll. However the more important thing about this is the food was terrible. My boyfriend and I stopped in before heading home only because I saw the sign for oysters. I absolutely love pursuers especially with cocktail sauce and lemon... tell me why this place served theirs with vinegar with chopped onions in it... I gave it a try and the first oyster was sooooo salty. Like it almost made me gag. I assumed it was from the sauce so I tried one without and sure enough it was just the oysters. Oysters do not need that much salt If any at all. Not going to lie it was a complete disappointment. Wouldn't recommend advertising Oysters if you can't serve them correctly and then proceed to charge 25 bucks for a dozen on the half shell. read more

We ordered ice tea, steamer clams, seared ahi, and Caesar salad. The salad was fresh with good cuts of romaine and properly dressed. The presentation was good. The flavor profiles were very subpar. The ahi was seared correctly but the dipping sauce lacked flavor and nothing served with it helped the dish. The clams in white wine, onions, and cherry tomatoes also lacked and flavor. I apologized to my companion for my choice of restaurant. The salad was the highlight because of the dressing and shreds of Parmesan; the only part that had flavor. This bland dining experience in the only slightly busy restaurant was one I won't be trying again. read more

Stopped for a late lunch/snack on Saturday. The place was empty so that should have told us something. Ordered their Caesar salad and what we were served was romaine lettuce drenched in balsamic vinegar dressing. Terrible! We also order their scallop appetizer and this tasty little dish consisted of three rubbery, bland scallops wrapped in slices of under cooked bacon. Add the two draft beers (Kenai River - great) and this "meal" set us back $45. The night before, we spent $44 at Sushi Sushi and had a great dinner! Moral of this story, eat sushi and stay away from this Bistro. read more

Walking in, no one to greet the four of us or at least direct us to seating. Sat ourselves at a table - with no silverware or salt/pepper/condiments - for about 15 minutes before our waitress showed up. No greeting or introduction - just straight to the drink order. When listing available beverages, said they carried all the Coke products. I ordered a Coke with lemon; "we have all of those except for actual Coke". Ooookay. Place our order. Food was ready pretty quick, for 3 of us. Our waitress forgot to enter my mother's order, so her food was 15 minutes behind ours. My fish and chips appeared picture perfect, but it was resting on a wet lettuce leaf and when I put my fork in to break off a bite? It was sitting in a pool of water - completely soggy underneath all 3 pieces of fish. I sopped the water off my plate with my napkin and flipped the fish over to air dry. The fish and fries were underseasoned, so we grabbed the salt off a nearby table for it, as we still had none. My daughter's Kahlitna burger was completely unseasoned and cooked to death; it was tough, grey, and had the texture of a hockey puck. When the waitress finally brought my mother's meal, she asked how everything was. I told her - bland, wet, overcooked. She offered the manager. I said ok. We watched our waitress talk to the manager, an obviously miserable woman whose attitude projects about 7 feet from her face. She didn't bother to come to our table and speak to us directly, she merely shooed the waitress away. The halibut sandwich my mother had and the quesadilla my other daughter had were good enough. Finding our well-intentioned, but scatterbrained waitress was like looking for a chupucabra... and to end this whole thing off, there was a worm IN my fish that I pulled out and left on the rim of the plate. Service was inattentive, food is pedestrian and inconsistent at best, and the manager couldn't give less of a f*ck if she tried. Let it be known, the manager is the reason for this review; IF she would have spoken to us at all, I wouldn't be writing this now. This bistro is the scene of the smallest tip I have ever left in my adult life. What a shame. Date of visit: July 19, 2018. Edit: Try Latitude 62 or West Rib, instead.
