The owner is really friendly and will help you pick out your food. I've had the beef kebab plate over rice with salad and pita, the egglplant over rice, and the gyro sandwich. Arrived on Monday around 1:15 pm for lunch. Son, who had been wanting one last lamb shank before he moves to a town that does not have any restaurant that sells lamb shanks, agreed to try this basic restaurant not too far from our new house. One table was occupied when we got there, and one worker was about to eat his lunch at another table. He moved to the kitchen so we could use the table. Lamb shanks did not take as long to be served as at our usual restaurant in Tower Grove, so son wondered if it was pre-made. It was also drier that what we're used to getting. Rice was plentiful in his as well as my "Eggplant over rice". We both ate less than half of the rice and took the rest home to eat with our own meats. My order was not worth the $14.95. I had originally thought about getting the "side" version that was half the price (comes with pita), and probably should have, since their rice is nothing special. Lamb shank is decent for the lower price, but sides elsewhere are better. Owner is very nice. He asked us after we ordered if this was our 1st time, and where we heard about him (on Yelp of course). The pita bread is soft and the chicken in the Tekkah Masala is super tender. Like, almost melt in your mouth tender. Wanted some curry for dinner and my boyfriend found this place not far from us, went in and was greeted warmly by the owner. We ordered the Butter Chicken and Chicken Tikka Masala as our main entrees and they did not disappoint! Very flavorful and had great portion sizes. We ordered a strawberry lemonade boba drink that was refreshing and some baklava as a dessert. The baklava was so soft and yummy! After finishing our food, the kind owner gave us free homemade ice cream that was probably the best ice cream both me and my boyfriend have tasted. Very cool little block around a cute triangular plaza with a fountain in the Carondelet neighborhood, Kabul Express had some classic Afghan foods (samosas, mantoo) and some classic versions of kabobs, plov, biryani, and I and my partner very much enjoyed our food, the speed of service, the reasonable price, and the setting. I've been in more hospitals and clinics for actual healthcare that weren't as shiny spotless sterling clean as THIS restaurant, too, and that's not exaggeration. We came here for the first time after months of saying, "We should try that place". The food was great. Got the gyro and the beef kabobs. The beef kabobs came with a very spicy sauce which was a pleasant surprise to me as I LOVE spicy! The gyro was huge and had a good mix of all things gyro. It's clearly a small family run place and does lack ambiance when eating in but I think they do a lot of their business to go. The service was pleasant and quick. I did also notice that you can order ahead on their website. Seeing as this is close to home and the flavors were good I'll definitely be stopping by again to try the tikka masala and the spicy hummus with pita. Delicious food. I'm typing fast because they are getting ready to close but this place needs to go on your "must visit" list. I had the falafel and hummus wrap. No complaints or feedback. It was perfect. Spouse had the chicken kabob and it was a big portion for seasoned chicken, flavorful rice, a salad and pita. Again, no complaints or feedback. I could have eaten both of our dinners. The restaurant was really big, very open and bright and absolutely spotless. It's a perfect place to take a group to eat and not feel crowded or rushed. Kabul express is out of the way in an area of town I've never been (south county/south city border?!?), but that didn't stop us from trying out this small, family owned restaurant. Started w/ some Turkish coffee to get past the 2pm five hour energy slump. Moved on to the chapli wrap which was delicious. Think of an entire meal (ground beef, veggies, fries) wrapped into a fried wrap w/ some special sauce. Sounds weird, but stay with me, it's gooood! Also ordered the kabob combo skewer over a bed of rice & side of chutney sauce. Everything about this dish was amazing, chunks of chicken & beef marinated, & the cilantro based chutney (ordered spicy) was probably the best part of the meal. They need to bottle that up & sell stat! Interior is tiny, 3 tables, a couch, a tv, some pics of Afghanistan displayed on the walls (how I imagine a flat in Kabul to look?!?). I'm guessing they do more takeout (save $3 w/ yelp checkin), but if you do come, dine in & chat w/ the owner who is super friendly & is living the American dream. They had an appetizer special (some kind of dumplings) that sounded amazing, and he offered to make it into a meal-style plate for me. (It was an appetizer normally.)
