Their generically named "hot and spicy" tofu seemed to be basically a low-grade ma po tofu, with some vegetables and a thick sauce that had a lot of cornstarch and probably something like MSG given the aftertaste. Ordering plain lo mein got me a ton of noodles with a little soy and garlic. There was someone whizzing away with a wok when I walked in, and I imagine they could do more than they do from a culinary perspective, but there probably isn't a ton of demand for the high-end vegetable dishes down here.

Housed at the end of a highway strip mall outside of Danville, Rustic Barn is neither rustic nor a…read morebarn. It is, improbably, a fantastic Asian fusion restaurant. Yes, you read that right. The idiosyncrasies do not stop with the name. Inside, The Rustic Barn offers an intimate space with low lighting and some interesting décor: random photos of locomotives adorn the wall. The menu skews Thai albeit with some Japanese dishes (gyoza, teriyaki, yaki udon) and a few (a burger, a steak and potatoes) that fit the establishment's rurally suggestive name. The proprietor, Jeb, is gracious and accommodating as well as a showman who likes to joke with his guests. His promise of "everything fresh, everything homemade" is a lot to live up to, but the kitchen here has the chops to deliver on that promise. Our group went with a pair of starters (crab rangoons and gyoza), a pair of curries (roadhouse and green), and a pair of noodle dishes (yaki udon and pad Thai). Everything was attractively plated and delicious. The rangoons were hand-formed into delicate shapes and contained plenty of filling while the gyoza were nice and crisp. My entrée was the roadhouse curry: the house version of Massaman. A hearty dish, it boasted thick-cut vegetables and a rich sauce done to the desired (a little bit spicy) level of heat. Prices are moderate (entrees start in the upper teens), but portions are plenty filling. Given how many Danville restaurants were closed on a Sunday evening, I count myself lucky that The Rustic Barn was not among them. If you come here seeking country cooking, you'll be confused and perhaps disappointed. But if you know what you're getting yourself into, the combination of personable service and tasty food in an offbeat location makes this the epitome of a hidden gem.

We ordered smoked wings, The Double Decker, The Dirty Rancher, The Pitman sandwich, greens, macaroni & cheese, hush puppies, and fries. The greens were ok but sweeter than we would have liked. The barbecue sauce used on The Dirty Rancher was really sweet but this was overall the best of the three sandwiches. The flavor on The Double Decker was ok. The Pitman's onion ring was underdone and wasn't crunchy so the texture was unpleasant and the brisket was dry. The hush puppies and the smoked wings were great.

Let's talk about a hidden gem moment at a familiar spot: the Buffalo Chicken Wrap at TGI Fridays in…read moreMartinsville. As someone who proudly wears the Yelp Elite badge (and eats like it too), I wasn't expecting greatness--but y'all... this wrap delivered. The chicken was crispy, juicy, and piping hot -- clearly fresh from the fryer and tossed in a buffalo sauce that had just the right amount of kick. Not too vinegary, not overly buttery -- it struck that Goldilocks zone of spicy, tangy goodness. Balanced beautifully with a cool, creamy ranch drizzle (thankfully not drowning in it), and a crunchy bed of lettuce and tomato that actually added texture instead of just filler. The tortilla was warm and lightly grilled, which made a world of difference. No cracks, no sogginess, and best of all -- it held everything together until the very last bite. Pro tip: ask for a side of extra ranch or bleu cheese to dip those corners. Trust me. Fridays in Martinsville also deserves credit for solid service -- friendly team, quick kitchen, and everything came out hot and fresh. Whether you're a local or passing through Southern Virginia, don't sleep on this buffalo wrap. #YelpElite #MartinsvilleEats #BuffaloWrapObsession #FridaysFind
