I chose this tailor specifically because he quoted $20 for an original hem on jeans, which was…read morecheaper than other places nearby. I dropped off a pair of black jeans and clearly specified--three times--that I wanted an original hem (keeping the manufacturer's original hem intact, just shortened). I repeated it because communication was a bit challenging due to the language barrier, but he repeated "original hem" back to me, so I felt confident he understood. Two weeks later, I picked up the jeans and was disappointed to see a standard rolled/folded hem instead--no original hem at all. When I pointed this out, he showed me another pair of (blue) jeans he'd done with an original hem and explained he didn't do it on mine because they were black, had no distressing, and in his view "didn't need" it. Regardless of his reasoning, I paid for and explicitly requested an original hem multiple times--he simply didn't deliver. Whether it was a misunderstanding, disregard for the request, or unwillingness to do the work, the result is the same: my instructions were ignored. If you value attention to detail and want exactly what you ask for (especially on something specific like preserving the original hem), I'd recommend going elsewhere. Disappointing experience for a simple alteration.

In defending alterations specialist everywhere, most alterations shops are individually owned and…read moreoperated, most with the owner and one or two others working and in some cases JUST the owner is the only seamstress available! Pricing and turn around time are always relevant to the time of year and the particular garment in question. Pricing out most garments is also relevant to the time and supplies involved. If you are more concerned with price than having a qualified, skilled seamstress take care of your garments, then respectfully ask for a price estimate in advance! As a seamstress myself, I'm often asked to "dicker" on pricing! As a qualified individual that has spent years of time and money to perfect my skill I find it offensive also to be asked to reduce my price based on what you paid for your garment, the reality is that it takes the same amount of time, effort and supplies to do the job. It saddens me that alterations, for whatever reason, have been downgraded in comparison to other skilled professions.

When I checked out, everything went pretty smooth; however, I made sure to ask what the return policy was. One of the individuals, five at the register this time (three men and two gals) confirmed that there was the 90 day. One guy told me that as long as the coat was not worn and all tags were not off, they would accept it. Questionable part is when one of them looked at another person to confirm it. If one were trained, you would know the exact answer, not look at another to confirm. Be confident in what you are selling and know return policies. It just came off as shady.
