Cobble Hill is lucky in that we have access to great grocery stores like Trader Joe's and Union Market, but I still find myself coming to K&Y all the time because they have such a great selection of products, and always very fresh produce. One of my favorite things about K&Y is that they have lots of produce (especially Asian ones) that you can't find at TJoe's: for example, gailan (Chinese broccoli), baby bok choy, whole artichokes, broccoli rabe, butternut squash, Thai basil, serrano peppers, just to name a few. Their roma tomatoes are so much riper than TJoe's as well. The produce is excellent, and the prices are similar to, and on certain items even better than my other go-to produce shops, Atlantic Vegetable & Food or Pacific Green up the block. Everything is laid out in a shockingly organized, sensible manner. And it's even fairly clean. But that's not all! Are you the laziest piece of shit around? You especially are going to LOVE shopping at K&Y. Because when it's been a long day and you don't even feel like peeling your onions, trimming your green beans, or chopping your peppers, pineapple, mango, papaya, carrots, cabbage, celery, artichokes and more...you can walk out of K&Y without feeling as though you've been price-gouged. K&Y Fruit & Vegetable looks like a typical Chinatown fresh produce market including low and reasonable prices compared to the bigger markets nearby. Besides being in Cobble Hill, the difference from Chinatown is that everything here looks clean, neat and tidy. Orderly vegetable bins make everything look fresher. Prices are clearly marked. It's cool to see a mom & pop store make it in the neighborhood. While there may be no jelly here, usually we hit K&Y for the cheap, fresh produce and head to TJ for everything else. read more

This place rocks. Sometimes I get lazy and forget about this place for a while....then I'd come back and wonder why I haven't been shopping here. It seems I get distracted by Fairway, Costco and Fei Long Supermarket (chinese) with their FREE parking. But those places are destination shops and usually mean big purchases. But for variety of fresh vegetables --this place can't be beat, for prices --this place can't be beat, and for freshness, ---this place can't be beat. They have lots of fresh herbs, a variety of mushrooms, a few exotic vegetables when in season, and lots of fresh greens. Yesterday I got 4 limes for $1, 4 lemons for $1 and small pomegranates for $1....gosh, I haven't seen these kinds of prices in an age! I left weighed down with two bags of produce and spent like $17. I was so excited I had to come home and yelp about it :D I did consider whether to knock down a star bc there was no organic selections....but they never claimed to be organic. So --no problem, for the things I HAVE to buy organic I go across the street and pay 3x more. read more

I'm a big fan of this place. Great variety, including fresh tofu, mushrooms (oyster, shirataki, etc), greens, herbs..they carry shirataki products and miso, plus a solid assortment of sauces. Reasonable prices especially for the quality and in this neighborhood. While it is a gem, I do want everyone in this neighborhood to know about it and frequent it more often in order to keep this mom-and-pop treasure around. (I was heartbroken to see the Pacific bodega/grocer--was caddy corner fr TJs--close awhile back. They were phenom. I frequently bought certain items from them even though TJs was just across the street.) Anyways, K&Y, first off, has sweet, normal-sized, normal-lasting fruits and veggies. Yes, that's right, I'm calling out all the shady people pumping the people's produce with chemicals to make them huge and last abnormally long. Looks like it's on steroids! I don't want to eat that shit. I buy fruits and veg to put GOOD shit in my body. Seems like K&Y keeps it real. They also sell Asian items like noodles, kbbq sauce, gochujang, thai basil, etc which has in a pinch saved me trips to Chinatown. Please, please expand to sell more green Asian veggies like Gai choy (all the choys), Gai lan, Water spinach/morning glory, fuzzy melon, long melon, chayote, etc--Would totally be deserving of 6 stars then! K&Y is a combo of TJs, your greenmarket vendor and a mini chinatown except that it's clean and orderly with friendly, civilized staff and customers. They're by no means a one-stop shop like TJs but skip Union Market unless you can't find what you're looking for at K&Y. K&Y, thanks for being a part of this bougie neighborhood. In a city where you rarely feel that you're charged a "fair" price for something, this place bucks the trend. I never feel like I'm getting ripped off here, whether its buying pre-cut squash, tomatoes on the vine, greens, etc. Everything is always fresh, clean, and easy to find. I find the term 'Neighborhood Gem' a somewhat Cliched term to describe a great find convenient to ones home location, but in this case I'll gladly indulge this super little store only a few blocks from my home. It's a fairly small space yet it has almost everything you could possibly want in terms Fruit and Veg and a handy supply of every day basic grocery items to boot! This place is the best! It's a small store, but they've got a great selection of fresh produce. There's not much in the way of organic foodstuffs, but everything is priced fairly and you never feel like you've paid a minor fortune for spoiled strawberries. When I'm lazy I like to get the cut up broccoli, which runs about 1.25 for a plate. I especially like shopping for produce here over the Met on Henry. I don't need to explain why. Coming here is convenient from either the Bergen or Carroll stop and is conveniently located across the street from Union Market. I like to shop at K&Y for produce then head to UM to get stuff like quinoa, buffalo mozzarella, organic chicken etc. Beyond providing a great value, I like this place because the man who runs it seems very nice and seems to have a good to his employees. Example: I was shopping first thing one morning and the guy walked in and said "good morning!" and ALL the employees responded with a very cheery "good morning" back. It is definitely cheap in comparison to the expensive produce across the street at Union Market and even Met Supermarket on Smith Street. After I discovered K&Y, I shed some tears over the money I wasted on produce at Union Market last year. K&Y has a huge selection of fruits and veggies at the best price in the neighborhood. I always feel like i'm robbing these folks whenever I leave the store because the prices are so good. The cashiers are always so helpful and nice. I once saw a lady who returned a half used can of coconut milk that she bought from the store. She told them that it did not taste good. These folks gave her a new can and her money back. This is my favorite market! Incredibly reasonable, delicious, fresh produce--in my opinion, the best I can find in Brooklyn for these prices. I appreciate that they accept card payments (there was a card minimum of $3 the last time I visited.) My friend and I like to buy watermelon and other seasonal fruit to take to the park and have a fruit-picnic. They have good fresh firm tofu and kimchi as well, and a good range of Asian vegetable staples for awesome prices. There is a selection of grains, seeds, beans, nuts, spices, oils and seasonings here as well. Dry noodles, kelp, mushrooms, and some snacks are available. I'm confused why the map shows that this is located in Flatbush/Ditmas... I feel conflicted about this place. The prices are so cheap, and they have a wonderful selection of fruits and vegetables, offering things that sometimes even fancy/specialty groceries leave out. And they have a bulk selection, which I always appreciate. But I feel wary of how cheap it is, and how you never know where any of the produce is from, so my true allegiance will always lie with the farmer's market. Especially since there is such a nice one in Carroll Gardens just a few blocks away every week, where if you're a regular customer, you get great deals and it ends up being very affordable. I would shop first at the farmer's market, then K&Y for anything I couldn't find at the market, then as a last resort Union Market. This is the only place in the area that reliably has enough napa cabbage to make a batch of kimchi. And although I usually scoff at packaged vegetables (e.g., pre-cut broccoli florets ready to be microwaved), I actually really do like their soup greens package, which has an assortment of typical soup vegetables, as well as several kinds of aromatics and herbs, all the right amount to make one soup so you're not left with a whole bunch of dill that you can't possibly use before it goes bad. read more

Once, I did buy a package of blackberries that I found mold in on the day of purchase; they were sitting in the sun when I bought them, so I'd like to give K&Y the benefit of the doubt. I haven't written a review in a long time, but felt I had to today. I have been shopping here for years and have always enjoyed both their product and the people who work there. Today I had a horrible experience with who I think is the owner, a middle aged woman with bangs and a round face. I was buying a bunch of tomatoes to make a soup and the lady told me the tomatoes alone would be $27. I told her that I didn't want all of them and I wanted to switch some out. She rudely barked that she had people on line, so I said "ok no problem, I will be back" When I came back I wanted to still get some of the top shelf tomatoes but she wouldn't let me take any of them. She grabbed the ones I had out of my hand and muttered something in Korean under her breath. I was embarrassed as people were looking at me, but I didn't do anything wrong. I told the lady that I just wanted her to know that I have been shopping here for years and no one has ever been so rude to me before. I could tell she lost face as she couldn't even look at me and just mumbled "ok, ok" and was shooing me out of her store. This really stinks because I liked all the other people that work here and it is convenient for me to shop here, but I just can't stomach my money going to this woman with her crappy attitude. I'm giving two stars because I know the majority of people who work there are kind, but I will never shop here again. I hope she reads this, because even if she had a bad day, that is never the right way to treat someone who is shopping in your store. Maybe her family will read this and realize it is time to keep mom at home. read more

You will find what you are looking for in terms of vegetable sections. (although the selection may smaller than whole food or trader joe) their salad is so fresh and price is between inexpensive and moderate. Compare to the trader joe which is in the next street, there is NO LINE - you don't need to waste your time waiting in the line. FRESH! Clean! Good Price! There aren't a ton of vegetable options in CoCaGo (yeah, I just made that up. Realtors, please don't adopt it). On the one end, you have Union Market, which is chichi beyond belief. On the other end, you have Whole Paycheck, which is generic bougie and whose produce section is a maze of Saturday dads and little ones in strollers. And on the other other end, you have C-Town, which fulfills its mission as a hood grocery store by carrying truly sad produce. K & Y is a treasure. It would be a treasure even without the comparisons. Cheap, quality fruits & vegetables. Fresh herbs. Bulk green salad blends, perfect for us singletons to get our lettuce on with minimal waste.
