I rang in the new year here with great friends and my favorite band, doesn't get any better than that. Staff is nice There is an upstairs bar and 2 downstairs bars. They do have a coat check that if I remember correctly is about 2 or 3 euros. It's a pretty small venue/club so for the most part you have a great view of whoever you are seeing. Which is also the biggest downfall, it's crazy hot in there when it's that packed. During new years eve we felt like sardines. Once the front door opens you are walked in to show your ticket, then check in your coat then you are allowed to the area where the bar is at. There are two other large doors that lead to the actual club, but depending on the event they could be open or closed. Upstairs is usually VIP, which is great because you can sit and chill upstairs with the bar up there. Over the years Finland's biggest bands such as HIM, Hanoi Rocks, PMMP, The Rasmus, Von Hertzen Brothers, The 69 Eyes, Nightwishas well as international several international stars like Nick Cave, Hurriganes and Gary Clark Jr. have rocked Tavastia's stage. With a capacity of just around 700 people manages to give gigs even with big stars an intimate atmosphere. Like most of its type it doesn't have a great range of beers but, being where it is, it's probably a bit more extensive than you'd find in UK ones, for example. We were in on a Saturday night (when it closes at 4am) and the place was heaving from Midnight onwards. The punters we spoke to were all good sorts so it's certainly worth a visit if you fancy making contact with some locals. Like the Tardis the initial perception of the place isn't the whole story. Go upstairs to the performance space/dancefloor and you're confronted with a hall at least twice as big as the downstairs bar. There was a metal/rock cover band on when we were in (with an oddly varied set-list) and I have the impression that generally that's what you can expect to experience most nights of the week. Put your coats in the cloakroom though as the bouncers can get very ratty if you don't (no idea if that means there's a high likelihood of pickpocketing or not).

It is your basic Irish pub with few frills, but the cider is a nice break from your average Helsinki beverage. Prices are reasonable, and the bar is very clean which may contribute to a less authentic feel. My first time at Molly Malone's I recall that my bartender was really annoyed with some of the bar's Russian clientele. Ok, maybe a group of drunken Russian's singing songs of the motherland was like nails on a chalk board to an Irishman, but I had great time that afternoon and couldn't wish for anything better. Several years later, I found Molly Malone's to be the same safe haven I had experienced so long ago. The only difference this time is that I wasn't staying in Helsinki so my stay was unfortunately brief. Still a cold pint of Ireland's finest is always good when you can get it.

Apollo seemed like a very popular place among locals to party since I met a girl on the airport bus who also had friends that were going, and who ended up going there with me! The 10€ cover charge was annoying, but the venue is huge with separate areas for a lounge, a big dance floor, balcony area, and even a stage. On the Saturday night that I was there, I swore the DJ was playing remixes of Top 40s songs, but I eventually made my way to the stage and discovered that it was actually a live band! (I guess that's why they call it Apollo Live Club...) I would have never guessed it was live music judging by the sound quality. Very impressive; and it made me feel better about the cover seeing that I paid for both a party and a show! Top 40s continued to play after the band was done. The crowd continued to have a great vibe, and I had a great time during my brief stay partying with the Finns! Kippis!

The place is an old theater turned into a night club and has both indoor & outdoor seating. The music at first was a dj playing american music such as pit bull. Around midnight a swedish band came on and played all 80-90's American jams. The drinks were reasonably priced and the crowd was of all shapes and colors - lots of dancing. Surprisingly good food in this hidden location in Helsinki. We were visiting Helsinki during…read moreMidsummer, and so many restaurants were closed. I was advised that Bryggeri Brewhouse might be open so got a reservation. When we arrived, I was told that the reservation represented seating inside with table service, but it was a beautiful evening so we opted to merely order from the fast casual counter and have the food delivered to us at a patio table. Our food was really good. I started with a serving of the salmon soup which had been recommended as a Helsinki specialty by our guide that day. I have nothing to compare this soup to, but it was outstanding. Great flavor, perfectly prepared salmon. The starter serving was more than enough for an entire meal, so I shared with the rest of our table. For our main courses, my wife had the sloppy joe sliders and I had the wild elk meatballs with mashed potatoes. The meatballs were wonderful, perfectly done, good flavor and matched well with the potatoes in the gravy provided. My wife found the sloppy joes to also be very tasty with a bit more kick than such an offering in the United States. The buns they were on were perfect and the entire serving very large. One other dish to comment on that was ordered at our table was the Chicken Burger. Do not get thrown off by the name burger and expect a ground chicken patty. This is a full-size chicken breast perfectly fried and with excellent condiments and sauces. So, food, 5 stars. When it came to the beer, there are only a few of the offerings available at the patio stand, so I was not happy with choices given this was a brewhouse. I learned later, after my first bland lager that I could just go to the main bar inside and get the full offering. So my second beer was excellent, the Sofia. This entire experience would have been a 5 except for a couple of faults. One was that food took a long time to arrive and came sporadically, and second is that the full complement of beers should be offered outside or the bartender there should inform patrons that they are limited, but 20 steps away they can order from the full list. If looking for a nice casual night out in Helsinki, I can highly recommend this restaurant.
