The Cock in Helsinki Finland
Bruce K.

It came up in Yelp as a bar and so we headed here for another round before calling it a night. Some disco being spun on two tables by a mediocre DJ but the drinks were cold and the service was decent. Not too loud, we sat at a table in the corner and watched some dude trying way too hard to pick up some of the girls here. I don't know how well he did, he was suddenly gone. Maybe he had some luck. It's a nice looking restaurant, quite trendy and upscale. And how can you go wrong with that name? [Review 10080 overall, 1665 of 2018.]

The place was amazing ... the food was outstanding and the service was great! Unfortunately, I can't remember what I ordered ... but there was a Gose/Sour beer from Japan that was the best libation I have ever had in my life! If you ever find yourself in Finland .. this has to be a must-see!

The Cock wins with food and decor. I've been for dinner and multiple times for lunch and was impressed every time. For dinner, I tried the truffle risotto balls, clam pasta, and duck with risotto. Everything was amazing. They were out of clams the night I went and they substituted with shrimp but it was still amazing and garlicky. The duck was perfectly cooked. I would definitely recommend both these dishes. The risotto balls were a good starter, but not needed if you're not terribly hungry. Lunch buffet has lots of variety and always features two rotating soups, one of which is vegetarian.

Arancini. I've had better but A+ for effort.

Great trendy restaurant in the heart of the city. The wait can be long if you walk-in so reservations is highly recommended. We were lucky enough to get seated without one a busy evening. The basement downstairs where the bathroom is really cute. The restaurant and the food seemed to be like a trendy restaurant in LA like Gracias Madres or a cousin of a slightly more upscale Mendocino Farms.

The cock at least has a memorable name and perhaps they see themselves more as a fun place to go to rather than a good one. It think they are aiming for a relaxed feel and the type of place that serves good food and wine at reasonable prices and that should be fun to visit. They only make it partly there. First off the service is perhaps friendly but slow and knowledge does not impress. We had to wait 15 minutes for menus despite making it clear to staff we were looking for some attention. The lack of attention and speed was there all night. One person in the group also got their starter 10 minutes later without any explanation or excuse. I have seen one other mention of the wine glasses and I can only agree but also add to it. The champagne is served in tiny (my estimate 7-8 cl glasses) that are thick and clunky. First off not nice glasses to drink from and second I would feel ripped off if ordering a glass (and not a bottle). The red wine was served from tumbler glasses (same as the water), we complained and then actually got proper (still bad ones though) wine glasses and an explanation that it is their concept to have fun and quirky glasses - problem here is that the glasses are not at all fun or quirky they are just not fit for purpose. The staff also seemed to lack all knowledge and/or interest to provide any information on the wines. That said the champagnes are good (Mathieu and Rodez at good prices) and the other wines are at least affordable (think I saw one bottle over €100 and most glasses around €7). Food was a bit of a mixed bag, the starters were large. In some cases more like mid-sized dishes than starters but not very impressive. The tartar lacked all flavor (does not need to be spiced but then meat should have some flavor), the arancini the same while the flat bread was good. The mains we're substantially better, chicken was very nice and fresh spices. The steak frites was well made and prepared as requested. Enough food and decent prices. The dessert set-up is stranger as they only offer a buffet and being a buffet hater I passed on that. So for this does perhaps not sound like a good place but to balance it they have created a nice atmosphere and it is rather casual and at good prices. Many will probably appreciate the uncomplicated cuisine and the large portions so if going there with the right expectations (and patience with the slow service) then it should not disappoint terribly.

Face it, just the name will attract a certain clientele! They didn't name it Le Coq, as the French would but had the rooster on it and called it like it is. Friends were in here the day before and had a good time, so a few of us headed there the next day. It was very crowded so we couldn't get a table, although we only wanted drinks and this place is also a full fledged restaurant. The prices for drinks were the same as just about every other Helsinki watering hole, so no problem there. The bar staff were also very friendly. There is a downstairs as well with a bar there but when we went down there as directte3d by the bartender upstairs, and after we found some seats, the waiter downstairs said that if we were just drinking then we couldn't stay down there but had to go upstairs. Sounded pretty stupid. There was a bar there. We found seats. So that meant we couldn't get served. Instead, we could go upstairs and not have a place to sit down and drink. Finnish logic?! But on the way downstairs there are "cocks" painted on the wall and I think the Kelloggs company should have a look because he is the spitting image of the one on my Corn Flakes!

The bar owner is a total fan of the Texas Tornadoes and anything Texan. He's a Finn, but has traveled to the Lone Star State several times to take in the beauty, and is bringing a little Texas to Finland! I felt like this bar would be right at home in the Texas Hill Country. Around the bar, you'll find posters depicting the likes of Doug Sahm, Dale Watson, and Willie Nelson. There are Lone Star flags up over the register! God Bless Texas! The owner is a bigger Texas Tornadoes fan than I am, and I love their stuff- I thought I knew all their songs, but they've worked some Texas Tornado references into the bar that even I had to stop and think on. On Monday nights, they hold a jam session (no cover!), where local musicians get together and jam on a country/rockabilly rhythm, and crank out the jams. The best was hearing Johnny Cash sung with a Finnish accent! They have an extensive beer and liquor list, and the staff is friendly. The place feels safe, and clean. There are plenty of places to sit, along with some slot machines. They offer the national beer of Finland on draft, Karhu, but most of their best beers are micro-brews from a bit further north in Finland- amazing IPAs. The prices are quite reasonable, and it's warm inside. I had an absolute blast hanging out here, and reminiscing of Texas with the owner- he brought out his guitar and jammed out some acoustic Texas Tornado music. I'll certainly be back next time I'm in Helsinki!

They immediately responded in Russian, and brought me a Baltica. Aaahh- reminds me of Moscow. The bartender was really a local, who is in the local Russian Language Club, where they meet up here to periodically discuss Russian cinema, books and so forth. While here, you're sure to hear about many Russian thoughts and ideas- they speak of revolution! It's a great place for an American to get some alternative viewpoints on the "system." By your third Russian Standard you're sure to be joining with the workers of the world to unite! The bar is small, and authentically decorated in drab Soviet accouterments. They have authentic Russian LPs behind the bar, and a sign from a defunct Soviet airline. Even the paintings have that kind of weird Soviet charm. They have 3 kinds of Baltica, as well as the cheaper Carlsberg Beer from the tap. Don't expect a Siberian tour of beers here- they have the basics and that's all. Don't be a greedy capitalist wishing for more beers than you can sample. It's a great place to people watch here- don't mind those burly guys in the corner in slick shark skin suits and their hair all slicked back- the Russian that they're quickly speaking to each other in hushed tones is only friendly. It's a little hard to find this place, as there's no flashy neon sign, or any sign at all, for that matter. It's a place that I found hidden behind an unmarked glass door covered in curtains next to the Mexican cantina, Corona.

I swear, you might be able to eat 100 of these dogs, 'cause they're not very big- but they pack in the flavor. They also serve craft cocktails. With an aperitif cocktail on tap (never seen that one before!) they can make all kinds of crazy mixologist concoctions. I opted for the beer- which was very cheap, but it came out in a half-pour. The prices are pretty high and if you are very hungry, the hot dogs and kimchi won't really fill your stomach - but I really recommend tasting! Huge thanks for the music which wasn't playing too loud in the "backroom" where we were sitting in. We really were able to chat with each other without shouting over the music - this is rare in pubs and worth of praise. This was my first visit but I will definitely come back. There are only few places with this kind of atmosphere in Helsinki.

There was a 3€ entry fee/coat checking. The steam themed decor was scant, at best, and the service was lackluster. Many of us did not get drinks for half an hour. Despite the music (the live DJ was on top of his game) this bar receives a 1 star due to an inexcusable flaw and service policy. While at the steam bar, I wanted to take a break and use my steamer (an electronic cigarette.) They do not have a smoking room, so smokers are to go outside. I went to the coat-check with my ticket, (late October in Helsinki), and told them I'm going to step outside and return. I was informed of a policy they have, not to return jackets but instead to loan out a thin 'blanket' to smokers. Not only was I adverse to the idea of sharing a blanket with every previous bar patron who wanted to step outside, but my personal vaporizer was in my jacket. When I informed the two people at the coat check of this, I was told that I "could go buy cigarettes at the bar." After making it clear that I want my vaporizer from my jacket and that I do not want to buy cigarettes, that the purpose of me having a personal steam machine is to prevent me from smoking cigarettes, they agreed to release my jacket to me. At a cost of an additional 3€. This is not a joke, and after being polite more than long enough I even began to argue the point of jacket extortion to no avail. I was told "every time I want to touch my coat, it will cost an additional 3€. As a line formed behind me, I eventually told them that I'll take my jacket, and pay the fee upon return. As a matter of principle I did not return, and missed the rest of my friend's birthday. This bar had a lot of potential, but poor hygiene, rude staff, greedy management and terrible rules made creating a yelp account worth the effort.
