This place was great. I read other reviews, and disagree with a lot of the criticism. First of all, if you are lactose intolerant, this is your restaurant! Our server, Kati, was fantastic. She was so friendly, and took time to explain the menu items in English especially what was lactose free. Even the cheese was lactose free most of the time. Dishes are Finnish inspired but modern, and much is local. There are also gluten free and vegetarian options. They serve snapas, the Finnish version of tapas/shared plates, and regular size entrees too. The salmon soup was delicious, with a large portion of salmon. They don't have side salads on the menu, but Kati got us a small portion of a green salad with a delicious citrus dressing. The fish snapas dish was excellent, it was small but very delicious and featured mushroom mousse. Mushrooms were in season, the mushroom salad was fantastic with several different local mushrooms that were exotic to us. The food was so good that we went back again AND had the same server Kati, who again was so pleasant and friendly and probably one of the reasons we went back. Sat by the window overlooking the street, beautiful evening view of the city. For the second dinner we tried different things. The smokey cauliflower soup was awesome, served with chevre which was lactose free! (the soups by the way are served small or large which is great if you want to try other things). The game assortment snapas plate with the recommended side of Finnish akvavit (if you are an aquavit drinker you must try the Finnish kind) was really fun, it had elk sausage, smoked reindeer that was similar to prosciutto, and a reindeer mouse, served with small dollops of cranberry aioli-like sauce and a mustard. The Finnish meatballs were in my opinion delicious, served with a generous portion of mashed potatoes, lingonberry relish (like cranberry sauce), and pickles. The lingonberry cocktail was really good, it was a house made lingonberry & cava sparkling cocktail, so good we had two. Lastly, the yoghurt and cream pudding (again, lactose free!) was not at all what it sounds like to an American and was really really excellent. It was a panna cotta served with blueberry ice cream (that was actually more like a sherbet), with a licorice caramel sauce that was super thick and only very very mildly tasted of licorice. In fact, if I didn't know I would not have guessed there was licorice in the sauce. Blueberries are in season, and licorice is a local flavor too. So the entire meal was representative of Finnish seasonal dishes and popular tastes. As a foodie, I strongly recommend Kaarna (and Kati) if you are in the mood for a Finnish inspired modern plate. While it's not cheap it was worth the cost and you could eat here without the alcohol for a reasonable price. Appetizers/snapas ran about 12 euros, soup was about 10-12 euros, entrees are between 20-30 euros. I think we spent about 100 euros for three people for a full dinner with drinks, and a shared app & dessert. read more
