The surprise dinner was excellent!!! The wine paring was perfect! So professional! First question, do you have any allergies? After that every plate that was delivered was excellent! We had the three course meal with cheese board! It was a dinner experience that you have to trust the cook! I highly recommend reservations and please patron this establishment! It's worth it!

PASSIO was one of the relatively higher end/fine dining restaurants I visited during my trip to Helsinki. The restaurant itself is located in a good, easy to get to area in center city...perhaps just a cool 5-10 min walk from a trolley. The restaurant itself is quite small and seemed rather popular among business travelers (since the prices are on a higher side...as a result of fix prixe menu). Dress business casual at least, so you feel comfortable there. I was ewally in Helsinki as a tourist on the way traveling down south to Eastern Europe/former Soviet Union countries...and didnt quite bring as much nice clothes as I should have..but at least I tried to wear my nicer shirt and non denim jeans pants! Nevertheless, the restaurant didn't make a fuss out of what I wore to eat there. Definitely do make a reservation ahead of time. The restaurant is small and they do try to time the dishes/ course for the table, so you can be sure you arent turned away upon arrival. I actually initially booked myself a 3-course meal. However, being a gluttony and a person who enjoyed eating...I asked if I could change to a 5 course meal upon checking in to a restaurant (judging from other tables around me though...most people went for a 3 course dinner). They had no problem with my request! The meal itself isnt just 3 or 5 course as you expected though as they had some complementary amuse bouche/palate cleanser for you in the dinner course, too. Overall, I found the meal to be good. Thr meal was fresh although I did find the meal itself to be quite large (and some..a little bland..I think I ate all the beef and left half of accompanied veggies untouched). Service was attentive and they took care of a single diner like me well (I think I was the only solo diner there! Everyone else was either on a nice dinner date, business dinner, etc!). The restaurant itself could be as bit hot in the summer (when I ate at the restaurant). I remembered looking at a lady and a gentleman far across from my table closer to the bar and they were sweating/looked a bit uncomfortable. At the end, I think they asked to switch to another table because of the hot temperature. Also, there was just one restroom/WC and I was kind of thankful I wasn't sitting facing the opening of the WC. I honestly felt bad for the guy sitting and dining there as I think he probably saw me going back and forth at least 3 times that evening....because the meal took that long! I think I started my meal around 6:30pm and didnt ger out until close to 10pm. Luckily, the place I stayed was super close by, so it wasn't a problem/too tiring for me to call it a night!

The idea is simple here. 3 course or 5 course; chefs surprise minus any food allergens or preferences. Ala carte of fish, meat, or vegetarian. Small but effective wine list, homemade beer. Pick an option with either wine flight to pair or your own selection. I had a great time at Passio. 2.5 hours later I emerged stuffed and knowing the € I spent was on high quality, detailed food preparation and taste. The staff was friendly and attentive and there were so many ingredients used together I can't list them all. Well, I could, but I'm too full right now to try. In the end, make a reservation well in advance, give up the reigns and let the chef do all the work. Sit back and enjoy the show. A plus is that whatever course you order they bring you a couple of "pre" course samplings. From other reviews, it happened for me also, so kudos to the chef for this procedure of honoring the customer. I took the additional 5 wine flight to pair and with the exception of the last moscato which was a tad too sweet for my liking, were excellent and great pics. The food in my courses ranged from lamb, ravioli, white fish, scallop, beef, compote, and a passion fruit explosion. Your meal will vary but the point is the chef takes you all over the flavortown map - and I liked it.

I found this place on Yelp while looking for dining options in Helsinki. It was not an obvious choice due to the fact that it had a small number of reviews but, they were pretty good. So three of us decided to check it out. The menu changes every three weeks and it's a surprise 3 or 5 course menu. There is a small selection of wine and some other drink options. The restaurant is very casual with nice comfortable furniture throughout and soft lighting. Our waitress was super attentive and very good at explaining everything. The food here was absolutely great. I loved almost every course except for dessert but the rest was really good. Nice flavours and fish cooked to perfection. I could have eaten three fish courses alone :-) I will decently come back here again. It's really good for a reasonable price. Well worth a try in my opinion.

    First Course: Salmon Pastrami

PASSIO has somehow ducked under Michelin's radar; but make no mistake, this should be Helsinki's fifth Michelin star restaurant. Star 1: How were the service and atmosphere? While Passio's location is shared with many hip, trendy, and young bar-type establishments, you wouldn't know it the second you walk through the doors. With quaint seating for maybe thirty or so people, the atmosphere is excellent, and while there was a slight hiccup with my reservation and I couldn't be seated for a bit, the mishap was well handled and quickly remedied. Star Granted. Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost? The logistics at Passio couldn't be simpler. Do you want three courses or five? I opted for three, and the cost was a reasonable fifty or so euro sans any alcohol pairings. Star Granted. Stars 3 and 4: How was the food? All three of my courses had some fantastically unique and flavorful component. The initial course was a salmon pastrami with frozen cucumber puree, diced red onion, and a frozen green dish of some sort that added a really unique aspect. The salmon pastrami was the call out here - fantastic. The second main course was a blend of beef filet and brisket with a fried potato and some greens. The brisket in particular was excellent. The dessert course consisted of sorbet with chocolate cake, mango custard and a mango sorbet that provided a fantastic fruity blend. Dual Stars Granted. Star 5: Would you eat here every day if you could? Yes - next time I'll go with five courses.

Overall experience is not bad, but it's not as good as the price deserves. Wine selection could be better as the set menu is pricy.

We loved the surprise menu (it was a great way for us to try authentic Northern European cuisine that we normally wouldn't have ordered from a menu) and the service was excellent! I really appreciated how they adapted the menu to meet my eating requirements. It made for a wonderful first meal in Helsinki and if we return to the city in the future then we'll be back! If you're reading this--go! Enjoy all of the unique flavors and combinations, as well as not having to make any decisions.

The most perfect dining experience in years! We ate the 3 course menu and got actually 5 courses. Every single bite on the plates were pure and simple perfection, heavenly! The wines were so good and the service was excellent. You must experience this!

Simple menu of 3 or 5 dishes prix fixe, 50 or 70 euros for dinner. Every dish was delicious and a work of art. Wonderful presentation and a delightful taste of local cuisine. A must for all visitors.

We came in for dinner on a Friday night with no reservation and we sat at the bar. The place got very busy and they even had to turn people away because there was no room. I guess you should try to make a reservation if possible! The menu is a bit limited and seemed to focus on traditional Finnish food. I was probably most interested in the meatball plate but it looked like too much food (also was like 24 euros which seems steep for meatballs), so I opted for a full sized tomato basil soup. I guess it was also a bit pricey at 18 euros for just soup and some bread so maybe not the best value. I did think the soup was okay, a bit on the saltier side so I had trouble finishing all of it. It did pair nicely with the bread but I didn't get that much bread for the amount of soup I got. The soup had a glob of goat cheese and basil which I thought paired nicely. My husband ordered the stew plate and he liked it but thought they didn't really give you that much meat. I agreed. The mashed potatoes were quite good and creamy but the dish kinda felt like it was just a very expensive plate of mashed potatoes and gravy. The blueberry dessert was not bad but I don't really like jam/jelly that much though so I couldn't eat too much of it. It did pair nicely with ice cream. Overall, interesting ambiance but probably not the best restaurant for me.

It was a recommendation from a coworker. The band was ok, but like, they had no stage presence and it seemed like they were on some kind of hallucinogenic drug. It makes you feel like you took 30 cat tranquilizers and then went bungee jumping. Anyways, the singer of the band... his eyes were pure white, like he was doing a thorough examination of the back of his skull. It looked like he was possessed. Over all the band was good. They were no Apocolyptica, but I'll give them a pass. I checked out their first album and it was pretty cool, but the second album got a little too poppy. It's like they sold out. The audience was cool though, it was like half old fans and half new fans. I could tell that some of the old fans were like, just waiting to hear the hits, but the younger crowd were totally vibing. Let's just say that I saw some very new and unique dance moves that night. I now know what it looks like to twerk to metal. I digress. I read that the elk burger was great, and it totally was. It almost rivaled the reindeer steak, which stole the show. You don't see gazpacho on too many menus, so that was a delightful surprise. Almost as delightful as the cocktails. I asked the pleasant bartender to make me a mocktail because I'm 2 weeks sober. She went a little heavy on the pineapple juice, but that was ok. I'm kind of open to new things...ish. Lapp is located only a block or two from the main esplanade and action of downtown Helsinki. I strongly suggest snagging reservations in advance as they fill up quite quickly. We ended up eating here at 4:30 pm because that was the only spot available during our day-of reservations. The interior is wooden and filled with antlers and kitschy decor to set the vibe. Yes, a lot of tourists go here and yes, I was on a mission to have some sautéed reindeer. Note that in true Helsinki fashion, prices can be quite high at this restaurant. We thoroughly enjoyed our sautéed reindeer, lingonberry sauce and mashed potatoes alongside our barley risotto topped with Lapland cheese and seasonal root vegetables (so flavorful!). If you're vegetarian, note that the menu can be quite meat heavy. They also offer a menu of Finnish beers, cocktails with Finnish vodka, etc. Overall, a tasty and positive experience.

The menu changes every two weeks depending on what is fresh and available. While the food was excellent, what puts this restaurant at a five star level is the personalized service. It is a one man show in here - he is probably the owner, manager, and wait staff all in one. He came over to our table, had a small talk about our tastes, and suggested an excellent red wine to go with our meal. So far this is normal for most restaurants of this caliber. As we were finishing our meal, he came over and asked if we want dessert. I was hesitant and my husband was too full for dessert. However, Mr. All-in-one (I cannot remember his name) encouraged us to try the dessert and then brought us some dessert wine to try (on the house!). He explained to us how this particular wine pairs well with the dessert. The best part is that he genuinely wanted us to enjoy our meal and experience his wonderful hospitality. That alone puts this restaurant on the five star level. Service beyond excellence and the food is delicious! One of the highlights of our culinary tour of Helsinki.
