The people working there have demonstrated shockingly bad customer service. I (and others) receive constant rudeness from the servers there: customers standing at the counter, waiting for the servers to stop their conversation to walk over to greet you, begrudgingly taking your order, slamming the implements around, and playing bad, bad, *bad* music you know they don't listen to alone at home. I guess they play that awful music to show how eclectic their tastes are--it's like displaying a copy of Angela's Ashes in your living room bookcase in attempt to show you're well read to visitors, but never actually reading it yourself.
Anyway, what annoys me perhaps the most is that the tables are *never* clean. Also, everything on the menu is overpriced. I understand that it's a coffee house set in a student town, so the workers there are trying to look 'cool' or whatever (they attempt this by being loud and dressing like bikers or parrots that have gone insane) but common courtesy, good customer service, and at the very least *wiped off tables* would make the bizarrely high prices on the menu much more bearable. I see a lot of students going to Just Us, and the silver-haired retirees often go for the built-in theatre. The baristas at Just Us become especially loud/rude when they see a 50+ customer-- an attempt to shock their seniors. But these baristas don't realize that seniors were young once too--whenever I see a pack of pack of these silver-haired boomers wandering to an art show or the Farmer's Market together I always wonder about all the awful things they've done in their lifetimes (and who among them has committed the single most *dirty* thing. Oh, that sticky-red lipstick and those yellowed canine smiles. "Wolfville" indeed.)
But, thanks to this built in clientele of spoiled uni students and bored, art-going baby boomers, joints like Just Us will stay afloat, solely because they're one of the few coffee houses in town. If they moved to a bigger location with more competition you'd certainly see better behaviour from the staff--not to mention much cleaner facilities. read more
