We found it hard to find proper espresso based coffee in the area, and were very happy to find this place that actually had barista made cappuccinos we were longing for. Best of all - they have an (somewhat hidden) outdoor area where you could sit and enjoy your coffee with your dog in tow, as we did. This beautiful building just off the highway to the valley is almost the perfect distance from the city - you'll get there just around the time that you think you're going to need another hit of caffeine and Just Us can certainly deliver with its fair trade selection. While it's never my favourite coffee, visiting has become a tradition for just about any trip and it's always great to take a stroll through either the garden outside, or the mini-museum inside. I actually find their great effort in providing breakfast and lunch fare an unexpected treat but sometimes it can be hard to enjoy. In the summers the shop suffers from a horsefly invasion that can be off-putting if you forget that you are out in the country now. read more

Even before we ever moved to Halifax, we visited often and the first Just Us that we ever went to is still my favorite. You can find it on Highway 1 just after the Grand Pre exit. First - the view of apple orchards won my heart - nothing like a sea of pink blossoms heralding in the earliest signs of summer, to make a place stand out in one's mind. Once you enter, things get even better...that wonderful aroma of freshly ground and brewed coffee fills the air. Now, one could just order coffee and a baked good and be perfectly content, but you'd be missing half the fun. This (at least to my knowledge) is the only one with a small museum and shop spotlighting the fair trade agreement Just Us has with their partners in Ethiopia and Columbia, just to name a couple of grower partners. It is a privilege to shop in a place that really supports rather than exploits other lands. read more

Just started getting into the habit of stopping here when travelling to & fro Wolfville and the big city. Being the homebase of the company, it helps to see what other products they are going into - be it chocolate, tea, etc... Expect a slow crawl as the counter staff, while very good, seem to take a lot of time serving especially when the order is beyond a simple cup of joe. But this is an opportunity to stretch your legs, refuel, check your smartphone, etc... before you continue onto your next stage of the route. read more

This place had been well recommended prior to my arrival by a friend who knew just how much I love real coffee. No, not Tim Horton's, I'm talking real coffee here. Just Us have built a business around ethics, producing a product that's fair from top to bottom. This is admirable but those of us who frequent such places know that good intentions don't always spill out into the cup or onto the plate. I ordered a plain black coffee and a morning glory muffin to start my day off. The coffee is excellent, a well-roasted dark roast that wasn't so burned as to provide no character (I'm looking at you, Starbucks) but head and shoulders above the Canadian chains one may experience on a daily basis. The muffin was terrific, a little divergent from the traditional but baked properly and assembled from good, tasty ingredients. I'm sad I live so far away, but those of you nearby would be hard pressed to find a better cafe in the area. Good stuff! read more

I was swinging my way down through the Annapolis Valley over the weekend and I saw a sign on the side of the highway that made me stop and pause. The sign was for the Just Us! Coffeehouse & Roastery and mentioned a Fair Trade Museum, as well. Since I'm such an inquisitive capuchin, I figured that I had to make my way over and check it out. If you're familiar with the Maritimes at all, then you probably already know that Just Us! coffee is more than just a local coffee supplier. They are at the forefront of trying to promote fair trade worldwide. In fact, they initially set-out in 1995 to become Canada's first Fair Trade coffee roaster so that they could put "People and the Planet before Profits" (i.e. their mission statement)...not just here, but around the world. It's this incredible passion that makes Just Us! so popular around these parts. What they do isn't just a gimmick or a marketing ploy, it's a way of life. Now here's the interesting part about this particular building: their roastery, chocolate workshop, head office, museum, AND one of their coffeehouses are all located in there. While they weren't making chocolate on this particular day, I was able to see into the roastery itself (it's viewable from inside the Fair Trade Museum). I'd like to see it again while it was actually in production! So you're asking yourself: but how is the coffee? Well, all of their coffees are high-grown, specialty grade organic Arabicas, selected for their clean and distinctive flavours. They purchase green beans from producers in Central America, South America, the Caribbean, SouthEast Asia, and Africa seasonally, during harvest time, and them store them in a controlled atmosphere to maintain freshness. As they say on their own website: "Organic coffee production requires traditional farming wisdom and hard work. The farmers and workers that we buy from put their hearts and bodies into growing and processing high quality coffees and we feel that it is very important that we honour their efforts and put the same diligence into our work to create quality roasted and brewed coffee products." In other words, kids...the coffee is dang good!! Just Us! isn't your average, run-of-the-mill coffeehouse. It's a mission...it's a belief...it's a way of life. read more

If you know me, you'll know I'm a fan of Tim Hortons and Starbucks. There coffee is delicious, but it's nothing compared to Just Us! Coffee. I'm not exaggerating when I say that it's the best coffee I ever had! They even drew a heart in my dad's latte! But best of all, it's fair trade! No trip to this place is complete without visiting their fair trade museum located inside the coffee shop for no extra charge! So the next time you find yourself driving on Highway 101 (the Harvest Highway), make a quick pit stop to this place conveniently located right off exit 10! read more

A couple of girlfriends and I had gone down to the valley for a cottage trip, and on the way back, we stopped at this lovely spot for a mid afternoon pick me up. I was pleasantly surprised with the cool Cafe. I had a cookie and a nice cup of joe, and the girls and I relaxed on the nice seating they have there. I was marvelled at all the local products they have there, other than their own. Lovely tea pots, coffee accessories, maple syrups, etc. I think this is a place I will stop every time I'm driving down to the valley. read more

There's even a museum explaining where/how coffee is grown! It also maps out how the beans make their way to Canada and how coffee grower co-ops work. This is a Nova Scotia company. I don't know why one gentlemen said there's an invasion of horseflies at the cafe in the summer, I go nearly everyday and that is far from true. Anyway, they have phenomenal coffee, and the museum is a really great touch. Just Us! Is Canada's first certified fair trade roastery and they have an abundance of delicious food that they grow right out back of the cafe! So you're not getting veggies from Ontario, or the US or some unknown source. They are organic as well, and change their menus depending on the season. It's definitely my favourite spot in the valley for all things coffee and tea! read more

Great spot! I love coming here to do work, the coffee and the food is always delicious, but unfortunately I find the staff slightly impatient and cold. A smile and a genuine "how's your day going?" goes a long way. The service seems disproportional to what Just Us! stands for.
