Cup of single scoop rainbow sherbet and some postcards
    Alicia W.

My husband and I were climbing at Smith Rock with two of our friends over Labor Day Weekend. We finished climbing around 5pm and it was still about 85-90 degrees outside. We were thrilled to see this place was still open for us to get some ice cream! I was in the mood for sherbert, so I got their rainbow sherbert in a cup which was the perfect treat on a hot summer day. The real star of the show is their huckleberry ice cream which my husband and friends got! This is what they are known for and it is for a good reason. I have never had this flavor anywhere else, but it was such a delicious and interesting flavor! The huckleberry was more of a marbled mix of huckleberry and vanilla. They only had a handful of flavors to choose from, but you don't need a big menu when you are able to do perfect the flavors you do have! This ice cream shop also has a small store attached to it where you can buy souvenirs. I bought a couple of postcards! We sat outside to enjoy our ice cream on their patio in the shade. This is a must stop place to visit after a hard day of climbing at Smith Rock!

This place was awesome! They are known for their huckleberry ice cream. The ice cream they had was blackberry and huckleberry. They don't have any tasting spoons, so you can't try it. It comes in a cone and it's delicious. I would recommend the ice cream to other people.

This place and their homemade huckleberry ice cream was on the must see list of things to do in the Bend/Terrebonne area of Oregon, according to the Visit Central Oregon tourist magazine. After a long hike through Smith Rock I can imagine a cold huckleberry ice cream cone would sound fantastic, and let me not sway you away from doing so. The ice cream was fabulous. It was smooth, rich in flavor and not too sweet. I just had a issue with the storefront itself. The nice gentleman serving up the ice cream was working with store stock, stickers, shirts and other odds and ends when we ordered. His hands were visibly stained with the evidence of a hard days work. His shop, rather quirky and charming in its old world appearance, was disheveled and in need of a good old woman's touch and some down and dirty cleaning. So when this kind man grabbed an ice cream cone, ungloved, with not even so much as a napkin separating his hands from the cone nor washing his hands before handling food, I was grossed out. I really debated not eating the cone, but decided, what the hay, I haven't died from germ exposure...yet. It was good, but very simple, just a plain old sugar cone. No waffle cones. No chocolate dipped cones or waffle bowls or even the option of jimmy's on top. Nope. none of that fancy stuff. Just good homemade ice cream. After seeing the long line on previous visits, I expected a bit more pizzazz, but it is what it is. The fees were reasonable, so if they could just work on the whole cleanliness issue.....yeah, that would be a good thing.

Wendy did not keep track of the plants and prices. She cheated me out of a tree. I am frankly surprised they received good reviews.

Yum! Huckleberry ice cream (in a cup). Better than Salt and Straw (PDX). It was a first! I can see it becoming tradition.

I don't know their hours anymore or if they're still operating, but the huckleberry ice cream is worth a stop if they are.

Thankfully we weren't there the day of the quilt show or else we would have had no parking. They have a menu with food too but we were just there for the ice cream. We ordered cotton candy, bubble gum, cascade blackberry, mocha nut fudge, and Kona coffee. The cascade blackberry I couldn't really tell what the berry was possibly due to the bite I had. It was nice and creamy though. The Kona coffee I would have liked more of a coffee flavor. The cotton candy was nice and sugary and popular with the kids. My favorite was the bubble gum because it had actual bubblegum pieces in it. Such a great find since the only place I have been able to find that is Baskin Robbin's. The only thing I would say with kids is that their 2 scoops in cup come on top of each other so if you are sharing you really have to eat a lot of the top to get to the bottom since they pack a lot in one cup. Service was not immediate but there was a few orders ahead of us so it makes sense they go by orders. There is a sign out front that eludes to slower service if this was the amount of people that show up to be patient with them. It's probably been better this weekend with the quilt show. I was happy with this stop for ice cream. There were lots of tables in the shade and within walking distance for the rest of the town.

They keep things simple, offering just a handful of berry flavors made by blending creamy vanilla ice cream with real fruit instead of dozens of flavor options. We ordered the blueberry with the dairy vanilla base and the marionberry with the coconut-based vegan ice cream. I had the marionberry, and I was honestly blown away. It was incredibly creamy, packed with fresh berry flavor, perfectly balanced, and not overly sweet. My husband and my dad were just as impressed, and we all regretted ordering the small size because it was that good. One thing that really stood out was how thoughtful they were with the vegan option. They thoroughly cleaned the machine before making my coconut-based ice cream, which I really appreciated. It's a small detail that says a lot about how much they care. The person running the cart was very friendly and patient. If you're looking for a shop with 30+ flavors, this isn't it. They focus on doing a few flavors exceptionally well, and it absolutely pays off. We haven't stopped talking about this ice cream since our visit, and it's easily one of our favorite spots in Bend. We'll definitely be back!

Birdsong Ice Cream is one of the food carts at Podski that surprisingly sells New Zealand-style…read morereal fruit ice cream. I never expected to find this style of ice cream in Bend of all places! They even have a legitimate Little Jem ice cream mixer. Their menu is really simple, with only two types of base, one vegan, one dairy, and four different fruits. They offer two different sizes, but I'm not sure how much larger the regular is vs. the small. The little display in the front doesn't make the regular seem much larger. Perhaps they should actually display the volumes to make it clear? Regular, Vanilla Base, Marionberry ($8.50) - They use a really, really stretchy base here, stretchier than most ice creams that I've ever eaten, almost like it has mastic gum added. Other reviews mention they use Tillamook as the base, but I'm a little skeptical. Tillamook is certainly stretchy since they use guar gum as a stabilizer, but I can't recall it being quite that stretchy! I believe most other NZ real fruit ice cream places use sweet cream as the base to really allow the fruit flavors to shine, but Birdsong uses vanilla, which adds a delightful note that enhances rather than covers up the fruit. It's a complementary flavor and works very well together, although I personally still prefer having sweet cream only. The fruit is blended in very well so there aren't any icy pieces at all, with the only textural difference coming from a small bit of crunch from the seeds in the marionberries. It's otherwise a sweet, berry fruity dessert. I guess the one downside is that the portion size is kind of lacking for the price. I get more from the real fruit ice cream places in Seattle for cheaper, despite Seattle being much higher cost of living. (4/5) Birdsong serves a pretty decent representation of New Zealand real fruit ice cream, at least to my limited knowledge! It's certainly worth a try, if not just as a sweet frozen treat.
