We started with a bottle of wine and then had an appetizer special (steak tartare) and it was great and a great portion for two people to share. For entrees we chose two of the wagyu steaks and au gratin potatoes with Brussels sprouts. All AMAZING. We finished with the crème brûlée. Portion sizes were great, seasoning and taste was great, Olivia was great. We started with the Brussels sprouts and autumn roasted vegetables For our main, I got the salmon and my husband got the scallops daily special. Food was okay -- but some things on the menu were pretty startling. For example: FROM JUNIPER'S WINE MENU: Kono Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough, New Zealand- $10 I have bought this wine in Trad'r Joe's in San Francisco for $4.99 a BOTTLE. And yes, in 2023. That, of course, is the RETAIL price -- restaurants get wholesale prices, so they generally mark up wines at least 100%. But $10 a glass for a wine they likely paid $2.25 a bottle for? Don't imagine I have to tell anyone that San Francisco is an outrageously expensive city? Not sure about now, but know that when Covid hit, San Francisco's cost of living was THE HIGHEST IN THE U.S. I don't know if the tax on alcoholic beverages is higher in TN than in CA, but even if that is true... SERIOUSLY?! Finding this kind of outrageously high markup in Johnson City, TN was a little unexpected... Cocktails were good, but not stirred -all the sugar had settled at the bottom, and the drinks didn't come with a stirrer. Small plates were mediocre- sauteed mushrooms were very underseasoned and without any flavor, the shishito peppers were just okay, and the French onion soup was very very salty and we couldn't even finish it. Chicken pot pie croquettes were delicious. Desserts were fabulous (chocolate coffee yule log and sticky toffee pudding). All in all, we loved the desserts but were overall disappointed. Decided to celebrate my daughter's graduation from ETSU and asked where she would like to go. I had not been to Juniper yet since it just seemed to never fit when going out to dinner matching everyone's schedule and I had been told not to go without a reservation due to it still being really busy. Since this event was pre planned and we made reservations far in advance we went. I have to say everything went exceptionally well. Seated on schedule, attentive service, drinks, appetizers, entrees and desserts were delicious. What a pleasant experience and I will not hesitate to become a regular guest at this restaurant. read more

Our first time to the restaurant. Our dinner time was at 6:15 and the parking was atrocious, we had to park up on the road that had no sidewalk. They have a sign for extra parking but it's up on a hill and they have no pathway down to the restaurant. So we had to hold our cellphone up as a flashlight walking down the road. My shoes got all muddy between the roads and parking lot. We both ordered salmon (which is our favorite) and we were very disappointed because it was overcooked. We were seated at a very tiny table for two upstairs and it was very loud we could hardly hear each other talk. The cocktails were good. I have never been treated so badly at a restaurant in all my life. We made reservations 3 weeks in advance. They would not try to accomadate us at all. We originally had a party of 8, they don't take reservations for a table of 8. So we made reservation for 2 tables of 4. Asking to be seated near each other. They had us seated on 2 different floors. 2 of our party couldn't come and so we had 6 and asked to be seated at one table. There were 3 6 top tables open. They wouldn't do it. Second time we tried making reservations well in advance, by 3 weeks. Not only could we not be near each other, they put us on different floors of the restaurant. No apologizes and very curt that they were unable to change anything. I recently moved here from New York and love going to fine dinning restaurants that have always been very accommodating. I will never go to this restaurant again even if it were just for two instead of the 7 ladies I was with. We are theater people who were reconnecting as friends so we left Juniper without ordering and went to Carrabba's right around the corner. Great food and we tipped them very well. You missed out Juniper! This restaurant would never make it in New York. I thought Southern Hospitality was a 'thing'. I guess not for Juniper. read more

I hope you will read this review in its entirety, especially if you intend to eat there with a party of six or more people. I have been to Juniper six times. If you are attempting to eat there with a small group (under 6 people) and can reserve one table, then there may be no issue. However, on two occasions in recent weeks I have attempted to eat here with a larger number that required two separate reservations. On both occasions, I made reservations well in advance - three weeks in advance! - and contacted the restaurant immediately asking to please put our tables in close proximity, a request that should be easily able to fulfilled, especially with multiple weeks' notice. Both times, the requests have been ignored and even tonight with tables open in the restaurant, our two parties were denied sitting even on the same level of the restaurant, let alone near one another. Even worse than this lack of customer service was the total lack of care or interest anyone on the Juniper staff had in accommodating this long-standing preference made both via email and phone calls. Tonight was the most "screw you" attitude I have seen at a restaurant perhaps in my entire life from both the manager, hostesses, and wait staff. Subsequently, my party left and went down the street to Carrabba's, where we sat together (at immediate request) and had a wonderful meal together. Juniper may not feel a current need to accommodate their customers in any way, but I believe as their "newness" wears off and another new JC establishment takes center stage, they will have burned many bridges with potential customers as they did tonight with the six of us. I do not ask for instant accommodations (although many restaurants will provide that service). Juniper does not. Noted. read more

This is top shelf. The French Onion soup is prepared correctly & served in a more than adequate portion for an appetizer. The pork was outstanding but the trout lacked seasoning & could use a lemon half & a seasoned brown butter side. For dessert, you could not find a better Grand Marnier souffle. I REALLY wanted to like this place more than I did. We had a wonderful waitress. The restaurant is Beautiful!! Love the Decor & the House Turned into a restaurant!!! We had reservations at 5pm & Pretty much got seated right away.. Took a little while but me & my husband got the Crispy Chicken Skins & My Daughter & her Husband got the Chicken Pot Pie Croquettes!! They were both really Good!! Hands down the Croquettes were DELICIOUS!! I don't even like Chicken Pot Pie but these are a MUST!! I hate to say we waited quite awhile for our meal. My Husband Got the Wagyu Flatiron w/ side of au gratin potatoes & both were pretty good. The steak wasn't a hearty portion especially when the steak was $58 the potatoes were $8. I got the Trout & it was ok. I ate it. But it was so thin & just ok.. it was $112 (chicken skins, Trout with a purée & root veggies, my husband got the Waygu Flatiron w/ a couple crispy onions, side of au gratin potatoes & he got a cider beer, we both drank regular water. $112 plus tip).. My daughter got the coconut cake with cream to pour over it & it was probably the best part!! We went here last night for our first time and fell in love. We got apps, entree, and dessert because it was all so tempting . The best part of the experience was us losing a gold bracelet and the chef ensuring we got it back. Everything from the waitress, the atmosphere, the food, and more was truly amazing.
