Tremendous....although we did get carried away and ordered far too much. I would reccommend 2 people share 3 starters and 5 mains or 5 staters 4 mains + side dish of chips and veg. Well worth a visit. This pub is dog friendly but beware resident cat "snug" is first in the pecking order for all those leftovers.

The food was seriously good for what it is, and I will recommend making the little trip (and probably getting lost like I did) to hunt down this quaint little gem.

Plenty of creamy mash, roast potatoes and all the trimmings including cauliflower cheese cooked to perfection although personally I would have liked a little more cheese but I'm a greedy guts. And lastly, the Yorkshire... large, crispy, gravy sodden perfection. I wanted a roast. I got a great one. And since I've last been they've renovated the garden area. Once I stepped in though, to the stares of the "regulars", I immediately found out that they do not serve food. But a couple of kind patrons engaged me and offered a suggestion: the Horton Arms. Unfortunately, they had finished serving dinner by the time I arrived, about 19:45 (7:45pm). That seems a bit early to me, but what could I do? Answer: return the next evening. So the next evening I arrived in time, and was quickly seated. I perused the menu, which had my usual favorites like Fish and Chips, and Steak and Ale Pie. But there was something on the menu which I'd never had, and it really piqued my curiosity -- a cheese and onion pie. "That can't be all there is," I thought; that's like ALL cheese... isn't that too much cheese?? But British Pubs generally do pie crust so well you could put damn near anything inside it and it would be really lovely. So I was a bit torn. The waitress arrived. I was explaining to her how I was trying to decide amongst my options, the cheese and onion pie being one of them, when she told me that the c&o pie was really nice... and that's all it took. When else will I have the chance to try this? -- and from a highly recommended pub too. Decided. The result? OMG! That was so good! See the accompanying picture I took. Just incredible. And the cheese was not overpowering. Now where am I going to find THAT over here (U.S.) when I crave it?? Especially in Minnesota!? (Probably nowhere...) Looking at all the different dishes that went by me while I was waiting for my slice of deliciousness, I can pretty well bet that anything you order here will be a delight. They serve food virtually all day until 9pm and they even serve coffee and breakfast from 9am till 11.30am. I have been in there quite a few times for food and i have to say that everytime i have been impressed, the food is wholesome and fresh, and despite the prices being slightly above average for the area it is well worth it in my opinion. The atmosphere is very relaxed and laid back and it is an ideal place to take that special person for a quiet meal and/or drink. Hence then that this isnot going to get your usual football/sports crazy boozers due to having no Tv's, jukebox etc. The one downside, and it is not anything major is that when it is busy you do feel like a bit like being sat in a goldfish bowl due to tables being very close to bar area. The staff have always been friendly and for me this place is a little diamond of Royton and more people need to check it out.

My girlfriend and i absolutely love this pub and are regulars there…read more It is currently undergoing quite a bit of a makeover and will be even better. The fact it is so big makes it so special. It can be busy but there is plenty of space for a quiet meal without being interrupted by kids or football fans or whatever. On the other hand when the football is on they have a screen for wherever you are sat and i like nothing more than meeting friends and enjoying the atmosphere in there. We often dine in there and the food is best described as good wholesome pub food. We have never had a bad meal there and the service is excellent. I recommend the combo platter for 2 which costs a miserly £7 and it fills you up so much that you don't need mains or dessert. The one gripe i have over the food is they use frozen chips, but i always have a jacket anyway so no problem. This is a great family pub that offers a wide variety of beer and is rightly very popular with people from Shaw, Royton and Rochdale due to being on the Royton/Rochdale border. They have a popular quiz night and various special offers on selected drinks throughout the week. There is always something going on, be it for St Pat's day or Australia Day, Halloween or whatever. This is just a great pub for a Sunday afternoon or weekday evening.
