The food menu here is all British staples ranging from sausage mash at about 9 quid up to fillet steak. Skipping a starter, I had the Barbary duck breast. The duck, whilst not badly cooked, I'd have preferred a little pinker. It came with some vibrant kale, and a deliciously cheesy dauphinoise "pudding". The treacle tart for dessert was nice too, though I thought it was weird that they didn't trim the rind from the orange slices it came with. The biggest criticism would be inconsistency over portion sizes. You can order the crumble and get a dessert that could easily feed 3 or 4, or a giant Eton mess, and others are just right or even a little stingy. The main courses had a similar problem: it makes eating in a group difficult. It's a shame that the ale choices are limited to mass produced stuff like Greene King. With so many decent local ales, you'd have they'd have at least one decent guest on. This is a pretty reasonable choice if you want some fairly well-priced food, and you're in the area.

There is a nice, fresh decor inside, all while retaining nice natural period features and touches. Upon taking our seat at the table, I perused both the cocktail list and the food menu for the evening. I always take it as a good sign when I am spoilt for choice in a new bar or restaurant. Without a doubt, I had trouble choosing from the very appealing lists that I was presented with. After trying a few of the different cocktails on offer, I am pleased to report that each and every one of them was fantastic. As too, was the food that I ordered - and also the food that I cheekily tried from some of my fellow diners! Service here was courteous and friendly, without being too intrusive. In fact, I felt sorry more for them in having to deal with a table of 14 of us and they did so very competently. All in all, I had a great time here, and if I am ever in this part of the country again. I would certainly be glad to return here.

The Cotton Kier is one of three restaurants located in The Valley Leisure Park. The service is always great and they always make it a point to mention that if anything is wrong with your meal, that you should let them know and they will sort it right away. The restaurant always has a number of customers in, but I wouldn't say that I have ever seen it packed full. Seems to be popular with families (children seem to enjoy the toy machine near the loos) and with those that might be going to a movie or just coming out of the cinema. They do have deals like 2 for £10 which makes for an affordable meal out if you are on a tight budget. They recently changed their menu... changed might be a big word considering they just removed a few items and added a couple of new items. Although most of the pub regulars are still on the menu. They did remove the Chili Con Carne, which I think was probably a good move since it was just a bit mediocre. They really didn't care. The previous month they had a ridiculous system implemented which seems to have gone, where they force you to order food from the table and not the bar. So you would have to order your drinks separately. They said this was to prevent people leaving without paying. They made a mess of this as well. It was a cold rainy evening and this was such a delicious mix of flavors. The boar and pheasant complimented each other so well and the apricots and gravy and purée made every bite moist and flavorful. Was wishing I saved one piece of bread to clean the plate! Last, finished with sticky toddy pudding that was a surprise. I never knew older rustic desserts were referred to as pudding. Came with a toffee sauce to pour over along with a scoop of ice cream and was a perfect finish. Just a short walk with a full belly to the hotel next door.
