I had been looking forward to coming here for a long time because this place has such good ratings. Maybe their meat is good, but this vegetarian was super disappointed. I ordered the soft tofu with spicy sesame sauce. I wanted to get something spicy since Sichuan cuisine is known for that. Maybe I just chose poorly, but the dish that arrived was one of the worst I have ever had. It looked pretty good--tons of cubes of tofu drizzled with an ominously bold looking sauce. At first glance, I wished there was more sauce, but I figured maybe the small amount indicated exceptionally strong flavor. I couldn't have been more wrong. I put some on my rice, took a bite...and I had to double check my plate to make sure I had gotten something besides rice on my fork. It tasted like absolutely nothing. No spice, no salt, no flavor whatsoever. I might as well have been eating plain rice with tofu straight out of the box because that's pretty much all it was. And there was no soy sauce or hot sauce or anything on the table that I could use to try and bring out some kind of flavor in the dish. Maybe I just chose the wrong thing to order, but my husband was pretty disappointed with his fried rice as well, which arrived COLD. Like I'm sorry how do you mess up fried rice?! I won't go back. I don't want to risk trying something else only to be let down again when I could just go to Old Peking instead. read more

Just left and I'm stuffed to satisfaction. Given my regular disdain for Tucsonan Chinese-American cuisine, I'm happy to say that I can't wait to eat here again. Chinese food is always my last pick when it comes to eating out in Tucson. Gustavo, however, is always in favor of an Asian eatery exploration and tonight I caved. His first instinct was sushi at Sushi Garden--I axed that snobby hot spot immediately and made him google something a little more authentic and a lot less un-fun. He came up with Jun Dynasty. Located less than a mile from home, I was a little apprehensive (central Tucson is conveniently located, sure, but no one's really opened anything extraordinary, food-wise, within a 5 mile radius...) but was willing to give it a go to avoid rush hour traffic. We pulled up to the "now open" sign in a relatively new strip-mall and entered a small, simple, but overall pleasantly decorated restaurant. Service was prompt. the hostess gave us a choice between table or booth and took our drink order right away. I was disappointed that, though there were tap handles and wine racks, Jun's didn't yet have the ability to offer alcohol. While I understand that they are new, I'm always a little befuddled when a restaurant opens sans liquor. In this case, it's the reason for three and not four stars and will be updated accordingly. We ordered Pepsi and diet Pepsi respectively as Coke products are not offered either. Beyond liquids and libations, everything was delicious. If there is anything I love in a Chinese restaurant, anything I could eat until I explode like the overfilled happy balloon that I am, it's dumplings--and man, does this place have some impressive ones! We ordered the dumplings in chili oil--an order of 6 is $5.65 and worth every penny. The flavor is perfect--subtle spice, salt and savory filling. I can't read Chinese and so can't be sure what all of the filling was, but I'm going to guess pork, but it was perfection. The dumpling itself was neither under nor overcooked, like so many of the other dumplings I've tried in Tucson (Gee's Garden, anyone..?), and the server even told me how they're made when I complimented them--how impressive is that? She seemed so grateful for the compliment too, related her own love for dumplings to me, and even applauded Tucson itself on the variety of foods available at local markets. It was wonderful to see her take such pride in both her food and her new town. Entree wise, we ordered the Beef with Jalapeno and the General Sauce Chicken. Both were hugely portioned and tasted great. Entrees are accompanied by a generous portion of rice in a red lidded pot. The beef came in small strips mixed with julienned Jalapenos and fresh spices. Though it wasn't as spicey as I'd have expected, the blend of flavor was so pleasing to the palette that I couldn't complain. The General Sauce Chicken came in a semi-sweet sauce; a blend of honey, citrus and salt that scores leagues above the over-sweet honey chicken dishes found frequently on some other (previously mentioned) Chinese eateries found locally. The chicken was well cooked, moist and not over-breaded. We didn't have much to put in a take-out box for later snacking. As for the service--amazing! Every time we had half empty drinks someone scooped them up and refilled them, every 10 minutes or so someone checked to make sure we were still happy, check and fortune cookies were delivered before we asked. One mark against them (and I have to write it because Gustavo's sitting here next to me saying it over and over...) If you walk in and you look Chinese they set down a bowl and chopsticks on your table. If you walk in and you're any other version of human, you get a bowl and a fork. Gustavo is adept in the use of chopsticks and was a little offended. I, on the other hand, am about as skilled in stick use as a drunk lemur and appreciated not having to request less-cultured utensils. To the management: I would be happy to four star you when the beer, wine and spirits start to flow and 5 star you if you update the menu with descriptions I can read. Also, maybe ask about the chop stick thing. Regardless, I'll be back for more! -Fairy Food Father Postscript: Why don't Chinese restaurants ever offer dessert..? read more

Authentic food, friendly service and delicious. Amazingly tasty food (without MSG) simply because there is no need for any of that crap. They use real ingredients like ginger, dried chillies and peppercorns to flavor the food. The dumplings in hot oil sauce were really good. The right amount of spice/salt and flavor. The fried noodles look totally unassuming and typical looking but it's bursting with flavor (garlic) the moment you take a bite of it. The soy noodles are very plain looking compared to all the fiery looking dishes but it's very tasty with an unusual but good texture to it. You can tell immediately that all the food prepared here are made from scratch and from natural ingredients. Will definitely be back! read more

Jun Dynasty - Szechuan Near Me - Tucson, Arizona

My first experience with Sichuan food was in London this past September and it was life-changing so when I got home, I needed to fulfill my craving for the mouth-numbing deliciousness that is Sichuan. Luckily, we read an article about the 10 best Chinese food restaurants in Tucson and Jun Dynasty was listed...thank the gods! We went, as those who are retired do, for the lunch specials to try out the menu first. We didn't order off the lunch specials and haven't yet after several visits...the food is just too darn good to just have one plate. I am obsessed with Sichuan dry green beans. Omg, the sichuan peppercorns are amazing as they build up and eventually, your mouth is numb..so fun! We've ordered Beef Chow Fun, Walnut Shrimp, Hot and Sour soup, and the BEST Cumin Lamb (ordered twice), Eggplant, Steamed and Fried Dumplings...oh my, I just haven't found anything that isn't good. This is a place I must make the drive (we're on the far southeast side of town) at least once every two weeks if not once a week. We want to try those other restaurants mentioned, but it's really hard to drive by Jun Dynasty when those green beans and cumin lamb are calling to you... read more

Food is good, really stellar and considerate curbside pickup service. Great job guys!

Update: about an hour later I received a call following up on this post. I must share I was impressed by the timely response. The individual I spoke with was apologetic and actively sought out details of my experience with the goal of improvement as well as addressing my disappointment in this evenings experience. I look forward to an improved experience in the future and due to how Junn Dynasty addressed my complaint, I am willing to take the chance to try again in the future. read more

Impressive. Jun Dynasty is on par with most of the Szechuan restaurants in San Francisco and, as such, boasts a variety of dishes that you wouldn't normally find at a local Chinese eatery--like a mountain of tripe served with dried chilis in a steel bowl. There are many of the standards of Americanized Chinese food, too, if that's your preference. Other than delicious flavors, Jun Dynasty derives its strength from gallons of oil, which they must burn through faster than a semi crossing the continental divide. If you don't object to the use of oil as a sauce you'll find much to your taste--their eggplant is magnificent and their dumplings in spicy oil are equally so. The chili/chicken pile didn't shy from spicy oil or mouth-numbing Szechuan peppercorns, but who needs subtlety when there's Amazing? If you're not a fan of Chinese butchers and their inexplicable, bone-shattering style you might consider boneless dishes or prepare to resent your dinner. Prices were totally average and the service was friendly. The re-purposed Italian atmosphere really added something, too. read more

We tried one of Jun Dynasty's signature "Spicy Dried Pot" Entrees last night and were amazed and delighted by the flavor and tenderness of the beef. We learned that "Dried Pot" is the literal translation of the Chinese traditional dish -- but respectfully advised the restaurant owners that "dried pot" is a very misleading title for these succulent and juicy dishes. We strongly recommend re-naming this menu item for US patrons. A good way to test the authenticity of a Chinese restaurant is to see how many Chinese customers are eating there: by this measure, Jun Dynasty must be one of the best in Tucson - last night the place was full of Chinese Patrons. Real, authentic food with a Hong Kong flavor. They have no liquor license but they graciously allow customers to bring in their own wine with no corkage fee. read more

We were suggested this place by a friend, stating his family just opened up a new Chinese spot. Now, before you think I'm being biased... I'm letting you know that we don't actually know the family personally, just the one person who told us to try it out... & I would've just skipped the review if I didn't actually like the place. Why have bad feelings among friends, right ? Anyway. This place is definitely Chinese. The cuisine, decor, the staff, AND it's customers. Staff was so nice and attentive. Very friendly and welcoming. Food was delicious. We had a little taste from each section of the menu. Bad idea since it was just my boyfriend & I consuming all of the items we chose. Portions are gigantic. Family-sized for sure. This is also why it's slightly more expensive than say... Panda Express (hah). It's a tad on the salty side, but I'm pretty sure that's how grandma used to make our Chinese food at home. (Oh, I'm a quarter Chinese... Enough to know good food when I see it, but not enough to speak it...) Overall, it was a good experience. We shall be back to try more things ! {Excited} that we finally have a place in Tucson that's good ! read more

First time ordering Jun Dynasty. I ordered the beef and broccoli lunch special and the Yu Xiang Pork special. Both were outstanding. Very flavorful and enormous portions. Waaaay back in the 80's, when I lived in Phoenix, I had a friend who was half German and half Asian. I used to call her my 'sweet and sour kraut friend'. And she turned me on to the BEST Schezwan food in Phoenix and a place called Schezwan Inn. She and I were regulars there and she would always order our food...Pork with Preserved Vegetables, Moo Shu Pork, Red Chili Noodles...oh, the taste of it all! I've been trying to find an Asian restaurant as good as that one since then. And I found it in Jun Dynasty! My guy took me to Jun Dynasty for my birthday this past Monday. He was introduced to this gem of a restaurant by his boss who owns Rocco's Little Chicago. Thanks Rocco! Having been here previously, my guy did all the ordering choosing for us the Dumplings in Red Chili Oil (8 for $5.95), Dan Dan Noodle ($5.95), Stir Fried Chicken with Jalapeno ($9.95), and Cumin Beef ($12.95). The dumplings were the first to arrive. Beautiful, moist pork dumplings floating in a pool of perfectly spicy red chili oil! Wow! Very tasty! The noodles came next, followed quickly by our main entrees. The noodles were perfectly cooked with a little bite to them, and the sauce was plentiful and savory. The Stir Fried Chicken with Jalapeno packed a spicy punch with fork tender white meat chicken. I think the biggest, and most welcome, surprise for me was the Cumin Beef. I was a little skeptical about it as cumin is not a spice that I normally associate with Schezwan food. It was, quite literally, the best beef I've ever had! The beef was, like the chicken, fork tender and coated in mass quantities of cumin and stir fried with huge onion chunks! I WANT MORE!!! Seriously...I had to stop myself from eating until I burst! There just aren't enough adjectives to fully describe how good the food was! In a world that thinks Panda Express and PF Chang's are the penultimate in Asian food, Jun Dynasty rubs their collective faces in the dirt! read more

No ice in water after asking repeatedly very politely. The waiter hurried us through our order saying the kitchen closes in 30 minutes. The sweet and sour chicken was the exact same thing as the orange chicken and my dish, Kung pao diced, was all the non edible chili's and hardly any chicken. Also, the server told a call in customer that the restaurant was out of food after we ordered because they didn't want to make anymore food. read more

After reading a Tucson Weekly article, we decided to give Jun Dynasty a try. Perhaps we should have stuck with the Dan Dan noodles. My husband ordered the MuShu Pork and I ordered the MaPo Tofu. We also had an order of potstickers. My husband's pork was ok, for the price not too bad. The potstickers were pretty ok, but how can you mess that up? They probably arrive frozen. The worst dish was the Mapo Tofu. It was so salty I could only handle a small scoop of it. My hands and feet are so swollen due to the extremely high salt content from my dinner last night. I should have just been honest with the waiter, but I was trying to save him some face. The dish was that terrible. Having been to China, the food there is nothing comparable to Chinese food in the US. Perhaps this is true authentic. Our total for the two courses and appetizer was just under $30, no drinks were purchased. Tucson really isn't a great place for Chinese food. Thank goodness there are plenty of other Asian cuisines to enjoy. I may go back to try the Dan Dan Noodles, I need some time to adjust the salt levels in my body. read more

Jun Dynasty - Wonton soup. Big bowls. - Szechuan Near Me - Tucson, Arizona

Seriously Yelp? How could this place me so misleading! We checked it out during our trip to Tucson, trying to satisfy our traditional Chinese food cravings. Our hopes we high, to say the least.... Let me start by saying, the second star is for the wait staff. The woman who helped us was sooo nice. Otherwise, you'd be getting 1 star Jun Dynasty. We ordered the pan friend dumplings, which had the thickest wrappers on them. They tasted like pre-frozen pot stickers. We also ordered the wontons in chili oil. PLEASE stay away from these things!!!! Wontons in chili oil should be soft and succulent. These were crunchy wonton skins in the same oil that our Dan Dan noodles came in. Speaking of the Dan Dan.... think of over saturated top ramen in chili oil and peanuts. Lastly we ordered the Mongolian beef. It was so salty we couldn't eat it. It felt like my tongue was going to fall off. Hopefully you all have better experiences than I did, but I was sorely disappointed in coming here. Needless to say, we won't be back next trip. :( read more

Been a few times for lunch: Dumplings in Chili Oil - tasty and spicy. I dumped some of the chili oil on my shrimp lo mein. Shrimp Lo Mein - a little oily toward the bottom - maybe that's my fault. See above bonehead move. Shrimp cooked really well. No need to add soy sauce like a lot of other lo meins I have had. Kung Pao Beef - I asked for extra spicy and got a bunch of those inedible chili pods that they always put in Kung Pao. It did little to make it extra spicy, so once again, I added some chili oil. Mongolian Beef - I liked that it was not loaded with peppers and onions. They were there, but in nice proportions. I thought Mongolian Beef was supposed to be spicy. I fought the urge to add chili oil this time. Lunch special includes: white or fried rice, egg flower or hot and sour soup and a veggie egg roll. Our server pointed out last time if you don't want soup you can get an extra egg roll. Here's a summary of my experiences: Soups - had both the egg flower and hot and sour soup (no not on the same visit). Both were slightly thicker than I thought they were supposed to be but very good. Egg Roll - nice and crispy, but the veggies insider were slightly mushy. Service: maybe a little uneven. A couple of times it was pretty fast. The last visit seemed to be the exception. Others that came in after us got their food first and it took a while for our server to bring change when we paid. Price/Value: good for the lunch menu with nothing over $9. Portions are very good... haven't been hungry an hour later yet. Overall: Flavors have been good to very good. The lunch menu has piqued my interest in the regular menu. I saw: pickled chili dishes, hot pots, spicy frog (don't you just hate bland frogs?!) casserole, sizzling wok intestine... and other interesting stuff. I'd like to try some other stuff off the regular menu as it seems authentic, and I have been known to eat adventurously, but let it be known that this Westerner has no intention of eating intestine. Saw it done once straight out of the fire by Anthony Bourdain. I AIN'T Anthony Bourdain. read more

Ugh, I am so happy that a place like Jun Dynasty has managed to take the risk of opening up in Tucson, Arizona. Jun Dynasty offers authentic Sichuan-style food, so I wouldn't come here if your idea of Chinese food is Orange Chicken and Beef and Broccoli this might not be the place for you (although they do offer those dishes, so who knows!). What they do well are Sichuanese dishes, such as water-boiled fish, dry pot beef flank (basically beef in a delicious spicy-sweet 'hongshao' broth), and dan dan noodles. If you don't mind spicier foods, and like me, are enamored by the "mala" (numbing-hot) flavors of Sichuan peppercorns, this is the place for you. On the sweet side, there's nothing better than the fried Chinese steamed bread, served with a side of condensed milk. I mean, it's basically just fried bread (although most recently when I ordered it, it came as a fried red bean paste bun), but regardless, you really can't go wrong with fried bread. To be fair, not everything is perfect here- their gongbao chicken is more Americanized than authentic, and lacks the Sichuan peppercorn flavor that makes it special. But these are small complaints, and for now, for Tucson, Jun Dynasty is pretty much as good as it gets. read more

We decided to try this place for lunch and we were pleasantly surprised. First of all, the lunch prices are better than a fast-food lunch special. For around $8, you get to choose from a soup, main entree, rice and a veggie egg roll. I decided to try their Kung Pao chicken and it was great! The veggies were fresh, crunchy and full of flavor. I chose the fried rice and it was pretty tasty. The egg drop soup at the beginning was also pretty good. And you seemed to get a decent sized bowl, not just a cup which was nice. Food came out pretty quick because like I said we were there for lunch so that was also a good thing. My only gripe was that my food was not super hot. I like my food to be so hot it burns my face off initially. So maybe the sauce was cold or something and it turned hot food into luke warm food, not sure but even the rice didn't seem really hot. But the flavor was there. Good food, great service, highly recommend! read more

If like me you can't stand FILTH this is not the place to go. We've made excuses for the poor cleanliness in the past (it's late, they're too busy, etc.) but last Saturday night it was practically empty. As we we shown to our table I touched the back of several chairs -- YUCK! - --dried grease on the backs! The glass top of our table was so greasy you could write on it. My husband asked the waitress to clean it....she picked up a paper napkin and redistributed the grease. That took my appetite away. It makes one wonder what goes on in the kitchen where customers can't see the filth. Tasty food yes, but I'm leery of food-borne illness.. read more

Flavorless. Sweet n' sour dishes have no sour. Moo shy is aweful. Go elsewhere. Waste of $$.

My friend and I have been amusing each other reading reviews after our rather less than stellar experience last night. We started by discovering a dead fly in one of the water glasses. I will say to the credit of the manager that did get us reduction in the final tab. Then, a rave review by an earlier poster notwithstanding, I had some of the sorriest crispy walnut shrimp I've experienced. It never occurred to me that someone would have the brainstorm of assassinating this dish with a pineapple sauce. I God the horror from the resulting soggy mess. The sweet and sour chicken my friend had was reasonably tolerable as to the chicken but she wondered if the vegetables had been cooked. Cheap Chinese ain't good Chinese. Struck from our list of places to return. read more

This is a solid spot for Chinese in mid-town. I live almost across the street and it's been a frequent take out spot for me during the pandemic. I'm happy to see they're doing such a brisk business for take out/delivery while the dining room remains closed. Some of my favorites are the cashew veggie, vegetable chow fun, and hot & sour soup. I do not recommend the braised tofu if you do not like the mori-nu style tofu that comes in the shelf-stable packaging. I recently had something that wasn't very good, and after reaching out, the restaurant responded promptly to make it right! I also learned that they are able to make many dishes gluten-free using gf soy sauce-- just ask! read more

This midtown area was turning into a restaurant desert. Really good Szechuan and Traditional Chinese food is the oasis that will bring hungry mouths from all corners of Tucson. Juan Dynasty delivers big time. Even though they don't have a bike rack I'd consider them bike friendly because there was already a bike locked to a pole when I rolled up. And no one complained when I hitched Silver to the post. Upon entering the decor says get ready to pay big bucks. After looking over the menu I was relieved to see a large selection of meals enough under $10 that I could get a starter. I got an egg roll order. They were very tasty with just the right amount of crunch. For an entree I ordered moo shu pork. It to was tasty with the crunch of fresh veggies. My healthy eating plan was very happy as well as my tummy. I was really full and had enough for the next night's dinner. I will definitely be back with my posse or the gang. read more

A lot of Chinese people frequent Jun Dynasty, and a good Chinese friend of mine has named it the best Chinese restaurant of Tucson.Unlike China Szechuan, this restaurant is not all about spicy food. The owners of the place seem to be of Shanghainese origin, thus explaining some of the sweeter Shanghainese dishes/influences on the menu. Upon recommendation of a yelper friend, we got the crab dish. It was a bit overfried and salty, and because of the type of crab used (dungeness crab I suppose), it wasn't very meaty. The stir fried noodles is clearly a Shanghainese dish (sweet, soy sauce-based), but a tad greasier than I would like it. Overall a cheap big meal that satisfied my cravings for Chinese food. We also came in quite late (30 mins before it was about to close), so the food may not be as good as when the kitchen was more staffed. Several people came specifically for takeouts, and even the servers at the restaurant ordered food to go. Jun Dynasty surely has some fans! read more
