Chicken Enchilada
Wendilyn I.

This place is run by sisters who are incredibly welcoming and warm. I came here on MLK weekend to meet up with some friends for breakfast. Our group of 5 had two couples and a toddler. You order at the counter and then they bring your food to you. It came out before my toddler got fussy, which was a plus. We had two of their breakfast entries and they were both very good. The sisters raved about their chicken enchilada and their pozole so they let us try some. They were not lying, they were both delicious! They also told us how everything is homemade and their kitchen is so small that they're only able to hold fresh ingredients to make everything from scratch, and, I believe it because everything tasted so good!

I went here on a date with my husband. I ordered Caldo de Pollo and to my surprise is was so good. This is the second time i taste a good caldo de pollo in Austin (you know like homemade). The flavor was so good, the chips tasted like the ones my grandmother used to make. They were so good. Honestly, I'm not sure if I should be glad they charge for them... otherwise, I'd probably keep eating them nonstop. We went straight to sit but you can order at the register. Everyone was so welcoming there

Two pleasant sisters from Mexicali acquired Julio's from Estela 2 years ago. They spruced the place up, added some specials of the day (Mondays are mole days) and kept all of Estela's original staff. I've just tried their green chicken pozole and I'm taking some home for dinner. I will be adding some avocado slices and some jalapeño chile to the extras they add themselves: chopped lettuce, radishes, onions, lime juice and tostadas. Yum. As Samuel C pointed out, chicken dishes shine here. We have been coming for (ahem) decades and we always order the same thing: chicken enchiladas in green sauce plates + a cold Shiner bock in an icy mug. Same recipe... same presentation... same reason to come back. Comfort food :) There's a wee bit of free parking in front and a lot more Pay parking in back. Service is good. They still have a rack of Austin Chronicles by the door.

This was my first time visiting Julio's and had a wonderful dining experience with the locals. I had the Huevos Rancheros and it was delicious. Highly recommend!

Chips & salsa - so good

We were visiting the University of Texas and this was close by with good Yelp reviews. The area was Hyde Park, which was very cute. The lady who greeted was so nice! Since we were first time customers, she gave us free chips & salsa, which was delicious. I loved the thick and crispy chips and the salsa was perfect. I used it for my tacos too. I got the chicken taco plate, which I didn't know came with 2 tacos, and beans and rice. They are soft tacos and have lettuce and tomato on top of the marinated chicken and were yummy. I was very impressed with this little family restaurant. It seems to fill up after we arrived on a Saturday - seemed like the locals were taking advantage of their happy hour prices.

Quick service, their chips and queso were very delicious, I loved how crunchy and crispy their chips were. I enjoyed my margarita, and my chicken tacos were good, they reminded me of Casa Garcia's tacos. The chicken was very juicy, it could've used a bit more seasoning/flavor but overall I enjoyed my plate. Everything came out very hot and fresh

The staff was so nice!! Great energy. The food was a little underwhelming, especially for the cost.

Located in Hyde Park area, Julio's Cafe is one of the best Tex-Mex restaurants in town. Casual and cozy atmosphere. Good vibe all around. Food and service are always 5 stars. Carne Guisada was super tender and flavorful along with a fantastic frozen margarita.

I've moved in Austin for over 25 years and can't believe I haven't been to Julio's until today. Food was excellent and the new owner Claudia was the nicest lady!!!!! My friend was craving a rotisserie chicken and let me say it was delicious!!! We split that and still had plenty of leftovers. My other friend decided on the carne guisada plate and I couldn't stop eating his food. Soooooo good! I didn't have a Mexican martini but my friend said it was perfect and gave him a good tingle on his first sip! Love this place and can't wait to come back and try some more!

Went and did a true tapas style dinner here - happy hour was nice but some of the app plates are a bit small for the price since it got recognized by Michelin. I'd also read reviews from a few Yelp Elite members who were slightly disappointed. I hope those didn't color my experience, but I came away feeling much the same. I arrived around 5 p.m., shortly after opening, and the place was already packed. Luckily, I snagged one of the only two seats available at the bar. The decor was fine, but nothing particularly special. The staff were super attentive and clearly very busy. Things moved a little more slowly than I would have liked, but it certainly wasn't for lack of effort. I was considering a happy hour taco when the bartender suggested a half order of the famous Suadero Tacos, made with Wagyu beef. I went with that, plus the Frijoles con Veneno, refried beans with seared panela cheese, and a Don Dario cocktail. I thought that would be the beginning of my meal. Turns out, that combination was filling enough to be the whole thing. The food was very, very good. Still, like some other reviewers, I didn't feel it quite lived up to the hype. Would I have felt differently if I hadn't read those reviews beforehand? Maybe. Attentive staff and very good food deserve credit. I just didn't leave quite as excited as I'd hoped.

They have a cute indoor seating area along with a rooftop patio, which is really cute especially when the weather gets great. I got a corn poblano soup and I have to say that was delicious. I got the small cup and next time I go back I will definitely get the whole bowl cause that was amazing. I did go during brunch hours so I got two tacos. One of them was the Migos taco, which was delicious. I love that the tortilla chips and they were nice and crunchy still and not soggy. I also got a taco called the Cherrywood, which had bacon cheese, egg, potato, and avocado, and it was delicious. I love that their tortillas are homemade and they're not the cheap American puffy ones. They also give you complementary chips and salsa and both salsa were delicious. I literally combine both of them in my tacos. They do have some great drinks. One of them is the Highlander margarita which is really nice and smooth and they use patron silver. They also had another margarita that I saw a lot of people ordering and it was an avocado one, and everybody kept raving about it. They definitely have a good mix of cocktails and then anything in general that you would want.

We stopped by at 11:45 am and surprisingly there were plenty of parking spots around the restaurant. We had a great waiter who was attentive and patient with us. We ordered a mimosa carafe for the group. Unfortunately, I think they need a better way of serving these mimosas because the sparkling wine in the carafe gets immediately warm due to not being placed on ice. We were drinking lukewarm mimosas. Please rethink this El Alma, you need buckets to keep the wine and juice cold! Anyways, we received complimentary chips and salsa while we waited for our food. I ordered the breakfast enchiladas which were delicious. They had egg in them, and honestly never thought this existed but happy I found it! Wish the side of beans it came with was bigger. The rest of our group enjoyed their foods as well. There's rooftop seating which was lovely BUT there's a huge oak tree above that continuously drops leaves and debris constantly. Our drinks had floating bits and it just kept falling. I recommend some umbrellas. Our waiter was kind enough to let us move when a table opened up under the canopy. Great food, super cool restaurant but some operational issues that keep it to a 4 and not a 5.

The tortilla chips tasted homemade and guac was quite tasty with jalapeno slices as a garnish. My friend ordered the Sandia cocktail comprised of Lalo, Ancho Reyes, watermelon, lime, and chamoy. I ordered the Frida Kahlo including Don Fulano Blanco, Jalisco 1562, guava, blood orange, lime, black lava Ssalt. Note to self: Don't touch the black lava salt because it rubs off on your hands.
